My fan goes on and off like every 5 mins and stays on not more then 3 mins and after i shut my car off it will stay on for a half and hour or more even if its cold out...is that normal?

I never had a fan timer on my car... sounds normal though... when you drive the radiator gets cooled naturaly... when the car just sits it relies more on the fan. Just a thought.

does the cars water temperature guage ever read hot, even after tha fan has been on for a long time. If thats the case then it's the sensor in the radiator going bad.

it always seems to go to the middle of the gauge never higher

I'm not sure how you can re-wire the fan motor to run just off the thermal switch on the radiator without the timer.

Now that I think about it half an hour is long... have you checked your water/coolant level lately?... and make sure it's about a 50/50 mix with water and coolant.

Hey Mike, mine does the exact same thing... about 20-30 minutes on average... I'm thinking it has to do with the timer. (Age?) I'm thinking about taking a look at some timers from other years/models..

thank your lucky stars you bastards!!! :) jk
my fans never come on, and when i am sitting in rush hour traffic my temp gauge gets up to like 80% hot. the only thing i can do it point the vents away from me, and crank the heat on. i can feel the cars pain though, i would like to get this lil delima resolved, any pointers, i assume it might be the same fix, since the same parts are involved!!!

any pointers?

bobafett: Did you change the temperature switch to aftermarkets?
If the fans are coming on at 3/4th, then you don't really have to worry about it. But if you recently changed the temperature switch, you might want to try one from honda.
That is if the fans are working!!!

Jump the temperature switches (one on the thermostate housing [not so sure on 86 if you have one], another at bottom of radiator). If fan turns on, then the switch is at fault. Change that.

I dont think the fans should stay on after you've turned they key off... There should be no more power going to the fan after the key is out.
Bobafett: Im having the same problem with my car rite now, if i find out what the problem is ill let yah no.

OK here is the deal if yor fans do not come on jump the connector that goes to the sensor on the bottom of the radiator turnon the key if the fan works then replace the temp switch. If it does not come on then time to get a new fan. Now if the fan comes on after the car stops that is normal it will only do that if needed and the temp sensor tells it to relax it is soposto happen haven't you guys ever walked trough a parking lot on a hot day many cars do that.

My fan, drivers side, only ran when the A/C was on. The pass. side fan cycled with the switch on the rad. Never ran after the car was shut off. Then I replaced, my temp switch "B", on the T-stat housing with the green plug. After driving it enough to warm it up, I found both fans started to cycle together and the drivers side ran after the car was shut off. Only problem it runs for 25 min. It's only supposed to run for 15 min. There's a timer/ relay under the pass. seat. The temp swich on the housing has a higher setpoint than the one on the rad, so it won,t always start the timing sequence.
I was thinking of getting one, relay, from the junkyard, but seeing as this is a common problem, I guess a used one will be just as bad, and a new one is $$$$. If it gets to be a problem, I guess I could just unplug the #2 sensor for the winter, and just run 1 fan like last year! :(

Some cars have the fan timer

most LX-i's have them
my lX and 2 DX's didn not have a fan timer.

Check inside the fuse box of the engine bay... there is a slot for the fan timer fuse... mine was left empty with a plug over it.

if your fans don't turn on 99% of the time it's that damn sensor under the radiator, just jump it

a flush will not fix your fan. maybe your fan relay is crossed. on my stealth we had to set one of the fans to run all the time so the engine would stay cool.

All 88-89 LX-i/SE-i's had the fan timer which ran the fan for 15 minutes after the car is shut off.

My fans are all outa wack too. Sometimes it comes on, sometimes it doesn't (small one only, and it runs backwards  ). I think it's the little control unit thingy under the pass seat. Replaced the switch in the radiator already and it didn't help any

My fan comes on and runs about 15minutes in the summer, but since It got cold out, I haven't heard come on and mines an 86 LX-i.
