well guys, looks like i probably won't be a 3g owner for very much longer. I'm gonna trade it for a 1991 Explorer with bad headgaskets, but a recently rebuilt tranny and a pretty good body. I'll most likely pull the engine out of my '92 and put it into the '91, and then do headgaskets on the '92 and wait for another tranny to come along. but idk, i'm gonna have to still close the deal. but anywho, i just wanted to thank everyone here for all their help. the seattle 3geez meet was awesome, and i'd like to stay in touch with the people i met on that trip.

The new '91 will be my third Explorer. Considering the fact that my first one ran until 330k miles on the stock engine and tranny, i think ford knows a thing or two about building vehicles.

The one thing I'm gonna miss is the fuel economy, as i'll be getting about 8 mpg less in my Explorers. But I won't need to dump as much into the Explorers to get them up and running reliably. Will I miss the 3g? Maybe a little, but I like my Explorer a lot more.

good luck, there are 25 of them in the junkyard here, there has to be a reason, they look fine, just don't run. you got lucky on the one with high miles

Just about any car produced can get that far. It just takes maintenance. 3g's just happen to be the easiest car to maintain. Or at least one of them.

Anyway, good luck!
I hear the mazda 5-spd is a little more reliable than the automatics on those...

Have you seen my car in real life? When you do, you'll say otherwise. My car has mud, dirt and crap all over the sides behind the wheels. When it hasn't rained in a while. :D

At this point, not a whole lot since I've got just about no money. I would like to eventually mount my McNeil flared out fiberglass fenders onto one of them and do McNeil long travel front suspension and four link the rear, but that'll take time. Goal one is to get one to be a reliable daily driver and make the other a project rig.

and yea, the 5 spd is waaaaaay more reliable. Fortunately, the '91 has a recently rebuilt auto tranny, so that'll last for a while. I'd like to swap in a Chevy 4L60-E tranny into whatever becomes the project rig. After seeing if it's worth doing again, i may or may not do the same swap into the daily driver. But again, that's expensive, and it'll take time. Explorers are a funny breed, and like all cars, some things work, some things don't, and some things are just a waste of money and time.

pics will be up tomorrow, most likely. i'll need to get a hold of my gf's camera tomorrow morning. With any luck, i'll have it running strong by tomorrow night. It needs head gaskets and an oil change.

If an Explorer is your cup of cofee... great for you.

Hey, post pics!!! PIX!!!

I second Lost that one may find more Explorers in the jy than Accords. I seldom find 5Gs (94-97) but I ran into 2000-02 Explorers the last time I went to the american part of the yard hunting for a transmission cooler. Again, it is a matter of preference and intended use I think.

Did I ask for pics???

lol, i know, i know, pics soon! i cannot for the life of me find a camera cord, so i think i might have to go buy one.

I can't bash on the Explorers/Rangers: My dad's '96 has 320k+ and hasn't caused him a single problem.

PICS!

here it is right after a quick scrubbing to get all the moss off

those with good eyes will notice that it's got two front wheels on the passenger side. at the time of that pic, it had crappy wheels on the passenger side. Now, it's got a full set of the grey steel wheels, with the fronts in front and the backs in back

the black one is my parts rig. i'll be pulling the motor out pretty soon. I think the forecast said something about snow, so motor pulling might be postponed.

all the seats pulled out
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m178/jon_geddes09/100_1959.jpg

and one leather '92 seat in. all the seats are in now, and the grey leather/blue carpet doesn't look too bad!

Ewe! Get a newer OEM steering wheel.

jg09
03-07-2010, 05:09 PM
eventually, i'm gonna get some newer ranger rims like this
http://www.automedia.com/NewCarBuyersGuide/photos/2005/Ford/Ranger%20Super%20Cab/Pickup_Truck/2006_Ford_RangerSuper_ext_1.jpg

and probably a mustang steering wheel like this
http://www.streetperformance.com/ART/PRODUCTS/101703/M-3601-B.jpg

but both of those will be during the "update" phase of the project. I'm focusing on making everything run reliably for now

jg09

altho these wheels are cool too, i might try and find a set of these. these will be more expensive most likely, as they're from the '06 and '07 explorer. they might look pretty good painted gloss white, too. i'll do a 'chop of it when i'm back on my usual laptop

EDIT: holy crap! huge pic, i'll just post the link

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/a/a0/20091206162804!2006-2007_Ford_Explorer.jpg

EDIT AGAIN: mustang wheels fit explorers, too, and since this explorer will never be taken on four-wheeling adventures, that opens up a new world of options...
