As some of you know Ive been preparing for this a while, dropped my engine off at the machine shop and had new .20 over pistons pressed on, the crank polished, everything pressure tested and surfaced, block checked and bored .20 over, head cleaned, new valve stem seals put in (since I had em out of my kit), new seats. All in all local shop gave me a great deal. Ended up paying $239 out the door. So next up is to start putting it together this weekend hopefully. Will take a lot more pics as I progress. Have a 272 Delta cam to go in it, miata arp headstuds, all new seals and gaskets, etc. Cant wait to get started.

The "X", as well. I'm excited for the build! I'm confused, though: Are you rebuilding the 430k engine, or is this a totally different engine?

Nah Im driving my car on the 430k engine daily, and rebuilding the carbed engine out of my track project to put in the daily. :) Not sure yet what Im gonna do with the 430k engine when Im dont though...I dont want to just junk it since it has so many original miles on it, but at the same time I dont really have a place to keep it.

Nah stock head height. Basically gonna be a stock rebuild with the bigger cam, and the .20 overbore. Add in a header, and itbs, and it should be pretty fun. ill eventually put in my p75 so I can so a little more tuning, but it should be fine with piggyback and the wideband I have for now.

Not sure why you have two threads going on for this..

Ratchet extension for the crankshaft seal? Explain lol.

Sorry for late response. The seal is metal inside, with a rubber coating and of course the rubber lip which actually seals. What you do is tap the extension with a hammer around the circumference of the seal. The extension is placed on the outer portion of the front of the seal (facing out of the engine). You have to start it easily, and then just keep working your way around evenly. Works like a charm.

You have to start the seal by hand and make sure it is square. Then very very very gently start tapping it all around the seal. Once it seats a little bit, it shouldn't pop out unless you hammer hard.

2drSE-i
04-06-2010, 01:24 PM
Nah catch cans are a joke. To reduce crankcase pressure and excessive windage, you need to have vacuum on the bottom end. Our stock breather is attached to the intake manifold, which isn't ideal at all.
1. It takes oil vapors and sticks it into our nice, clean intake air and lowers the octane rating of the fuel.
2. Maximum vacuum is at idle on the stock configuration, when the motor is under no load. As RPM, intake velocity and load increase, the vacuum being pulled by the intake manifold decreases. Meaning at WOT, when you need lower pressure and windage in the crankcase, you pull absolutely NO vacuum. This robs more than a negligible amount of power.

Catch cans are open vented, meaning NO vacuum, at any RPM. Yes, you eliminate the oil vapors in your intake air, but this isn't a solution for windage.
There are really only two decent solutions
1. Vacuum pump. Constant source of vacuum, INCREDIBLY expensive. I'm talking 3-400 dollars. YIKES
2. Exhaust scavenging. You install a slash cut tube into the exhaust pipe, which pulls vacuum because of the Bernoulli effect. This isn't as easy as it sounds, as it requires check valves, proper location, and proper install angle. Also, a muffler, resonator, or any exhaust restriction would mess with it a good deal. At least you would have vacuum, and this is REALLY inexpensive. It is also RPM dependent, so your pulling more vacuum at WOT than you do at idle, as opposed to the vacuum pump.

Tdurr
04-06-2010, 02:44 PM
ehhh... i dont think its that big of a deal(creating vacuum). I believe its just you want to relieve all the pressure it builds up to prevent excessive amounts of blow-by. Thats why alot of people just vent to the air, because it relieves the pressure build up in the crank case and keeps all the sludge out of the oil.

thats freaking bad ass!, my next car i build i know what im doing now :D, i was just going to run a sealed catch can that runs
breather box > catch can > intake manifold so that way its still under vacuum but keeps the crap out of the engine, but that exhaust idea sounds much better :D

UM i wouldnt recomend doing it if you where boosted. AS in having vacum as a source to pull Crank pressure.

I would run a hose straight from that stock oil pan fitting an to a vented catch can. that would get rid of all your crank pressure. Thats my plan. YET you have to make sure its baffled if not youll have alot of oil everywhere.

Pulling vacum VIA exhuast is A great way of pulling crank pressure. I seen alot of guys doing it around here N/A wise. BOOSTED we do the vented setup. works better.

Just search around bro. There plenty of ways of doing it. ANd run atlease half inch hose. DONT RUN that clear BS all that does is make your engine bay look nasty when you see all the oil inside the tube.

Like i said, vented does get rid of the pressure, but doesnt reduce windage or help the rings seal. Not much you can do about it boosted though.

The stock AS valve on the carb engine pulls vacuum constantly (pulses), and was vacuum activated, but very noisy. I would have hooked my ventilation to the valve if I was still using the stock manifold instead of the 4-1.

Catch cans are NO joke. there many ways of setting it up. if you have to much vacum you you start pulling oil. ON boosted apps. the turbo is like a super vac. It well pull more then a N/a App. one can say this an one can say that. BUt I learned from guys running 500 plus hp. so i copyed them. Technically you COULD use the stock EGR tube connected with a 1 way valve. You would have to limit how much vacuum it would pull, though, as i imagine it would be quite a bit.

Nah one didnt come available when I put the gear on...I kinda like the stock one.....I cleaned it, sanded it, stressed it(coloring) and cleared it. .:) plus i cant see spending $150+ on something like that. Thanks man hopefully Ill have it done by our next meet...Got the truck going so this car is now the full time project...no more daily status. :)

Also forgot here the resurfaced flywheel.

This CrankCase Ventilation shit is makin' me think i should mod it on my car too ... Cause if its realy not ideal, then it must be a bit shit for the MPG and performance, right? Or is the stock motor fine with it? I imagine its not super horrible, but how much would stock benefit from say the exhaust ventilation one?

Nice ride, man! I wish i still had my 87.. Freakin quebec rust.. Lookin forward to seeing it complete! Also, how much help do you figure those badass valve springs will be? and what will they do to fuel economy?

I just completely forgot to put it in when we had it on the lift because I was trying to throw the tranny on in anticipation of putting the motor it.

Lol. Its the stock EFI manifold that came on my lxi in 1986. :) The only difference is that I removed the heat shield because i had to cut it up when pulling the manifold to keep from cutting my wideband wires.

Also people read lol, I said it was only temporary.
