View Full Version : How To: 94 Gsr Short shifter install

Well i was amazed how the shift is smoother then hell then the old stock shifter. I bought a ebay short shifter for the fact i didn want to hack up an expensive piece. Pretty simple All that needs to be done is some grinding

Tools Needed.
Grinder of some sort. Dremel. Die grinder. Bench grinder. w/e
C-Clip plyers
Some Ice picks. I call em.
2 12mm wrenchs. One self racheting...Trust me.
10mm socket. 3/8 rachet.
ramdom plyers. and w/e you thing needed to suit you.

1. Pull down your Stock boot (mine is stock) from the clips on the Knob. Then turn your knob to Remove it. SIMPLE lol

2. Take off your center counsol that holds the boot in place off. Mine was a total of 4 Bolts. Dx style. LX-i comes a tape holder so your looking at 2 more screws.http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww290/Rendonlxi/100_2180.jpg

3. Remove the Rubber boots from the shifters assembly. Now the to the fun part.

4. Take all the heat shield bolts off and removel the 2 exhuast hangers holding your exhuast up (under your cat). Take your time the shield is sharpe and will BUST YOU UP. if you have to bend it go ahead youll rebend it back to its shape when done.

5. Remove the bolt holding the bolt and nut in place. (2 12mm wrenchs)

6. Now go back up top and remove the big C clip holding the shifter in place then pull up. At this poing remove the Bushing on the Ball on the shifter. DO NOT BREAK IT. you well need this again.

NOW here you have the 2 side by side
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww290/Rendonlxi/100_2178.jpg

you see how the ball on the Gsr short throw is alot bigger. THIS is where the fun begans. At this time pull out your Dremel or Air powered tool TO start grinding. You need to use a piece of string and wrap the stock ball and measure it. THEN cut the string to the right lenght

TO give you a good ideal how much to cut grind away on the other so you can check now and then. by wraping the string you measured and cut using the stock shifter.

after you done you should have this
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww290/Rendonlxi/100_2179.jpg

Dont look nice but try to make it as round as possible. took me a hour with the dremel grinding this thing. so use what ever suits you grind away the shifter knob.

Once i got what i wanted i hit it with some fine sand paper so it wouldnt be rough. Then i coated the ball with a shit load of grease.

No test fit see it it goes in slight snug not to hard. move it around see if it drags.
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww290/Rendonlxi/100_2182.jpg

You can see how it fits nice with no problems

At this time you can reinstall the C-Clip and now reattach the rubber boot. YOu wont be using anything esle. Once that is done GO back under and install the 2 brass bushing provided with the shifter you bought and Reinstall the bolt and nut you took off. (reinstall heat shield)

Once your all done you should have this
http://i728.photobucket.com/albums/ww290/Rendonlxi/100_2185.jpg

Now put your center consoul in and screw on your shifter knob and Pull up and boot to mate with the knob. LOL SIMPLE your done.

Now if you have your shield hitting your shifter i ran a big skinny bar down from the top (as in the car). and hit the shield the best i can. I got it enought so i wouldnt rub anymore.

BUT all and all it was worth it for a ten buck short throw and some grinding the shift is insanely short.

Thanks come again. ENJOY. NOW WHO SAID you couldnt put a Short throw in a 3g from another car LOL.

When done it will look like this with the everything put together.

90-93 Da is the same but either way you have to grind the ball down. I just got the 94 Gsr for the fact it was cheaper

Ill post pics tommorow to show you. man feels good thou. I truped 2nd like nothing lol. im like shit

angus, lx-incredible, didn't grind anything i believe he used the cage piece from a different car. he described it somewhere else, would be easier to me anyway to do that rather than grind off the ball pivot.

for clarification,

88-00 Civic and 90-93 Integra will work with the civic cage, and an extra accord ball seat spacer and circlip. I gave the cage a wrap or two of electrical tape to fit snug. Less play than a rebuilt stock setup, and shorter shifts of course!

90-92 Integra will not fit properly without the civic cage and extra accord parts.

this was a quote he said to you specifically rendon.

Yea but from just accessing the bolt to take the shift off at the was a bitch. So it would b ten times harder. This is easy. either way works but took me a hour total on this project.

I'll post pics withe the consule on fellas

well it's whatever works for you ya know?

one of the reasons he did it his way was because he bought a skunk2 shifter for around 100 dollars, not something you really want to grind on once you get it ya know?

LX-incredible
04-19-2010, 11:59 AM
No need for that, you just need the ball seat and boot from a civic or integra.

The lower boot actually extends up and around the ball cage on the civic. So it spaces it in the accord housing perfectly (and makes it much less of a bitch not having to get the accord boot over the bottom of the shifter).

No tape or extra accord parts needed.

so THATS what that shifter is, I bought one for 50 cents in a second hand store, i cut it up to make a shifter that i didn't use, i went the other way and went for the long shift arm. I have the custom aluminum shifter with the goofy cue ball

so all it is is that bit below the ball is a bit longer than a stock one? i'll just make a bracket to extend my stock one lol

basicly but that brakete has to be solid. Best bet is to cut and add some rod to raise that ball up some. the higher the shorter the throw. the lower the longer the throw. if you have 10 bucks. Just get the shifer and grind the bitch. save you the cuting and welding. AND if its to long youll end up not shifting right.

Reason i say that i set the Pace setter all the way up. HOLYMOTHEROFBATMANBBQ sause lol. no but it was nice. but the shifts where way to close....i would get confused. lol.

That or did what angus did. Either way works. But i havent seen anyone do a DIY so i said well i never did once. Hopes some one used the info.

I just took a sleeve out of top shock mount ,cut the bottom piece in half and welded the sleeve in.
