Alright my buddy wants me to run a 1/4 mile against Him in his 99 civic Si with the B16A. His mods are B16A 1.6L vtec of course cold air intake, and port and polish. My mods are Blacktop B20A 2.0L (w/goldtop cams) Chipped ecu w/goldtop fuel maps, short ram intake. Who will win and why? Keep in mind this is a friendly run and no I don't street race my ride. Lets hear you guy's input

depends on a lot of things really. unless both cars where the exact same (same car, same suspension setup, same tyres, same driving, etcc....) with the only difference being the engine/ecu like you mention, then you're more likely to get an accurate answer :)

his transmission is shorter geared then yours, the car weighs about the same as a hatch, i don't know how much extra weight you carry. if his is actually ported and polished that may have opened up his revving hp, any rate i'd say a b16 will beat a b20a... but i don't think it's going to depend on the motor limitation as much as it would the transmission.

Great answer! That was i was looking for, a detailed answer. So you think the v-tec is a factor? He has a 1.6 liter vs my 2.0 liter. And both engines are rated at 160 hp.

well your motor will have more torque but a dog of a transmission, his motor has less torque (not much but nonetheless) and a better geared transmission for the motor. his motor will rev til the end of time (or a valve lol). your motor more than likely makes power in the middle of the band not towards the end, his will make it all the way up til the end. if he's a bad driver you might take him, but an em1 should take the b20 if most variables are the same.

Another thing i forgot to mention is he is a big dude lol. He is about 6 ' 4 275lbs and im 5'11 205lbs.

Keep this in mind, no 70lb's is not a big difference but for every 100lb's you lighten makes you a 10th of a second faster in a quarter mile

1/10th in the quarter mile = drivers race. I think that's what this is going to come down to.

Oh yeah, thats the point i was getting at. a 10th is nothing. now if there was a 500lb diff between the two then maybe.

absolutley,
never ever ever underestimate the magic of weight reduction, why do you think they have tech inspections at the tracks. 70 lbs could indeed make a difference in the pull, the magic # number varies between cars I would say.

(stupid regret) but jesus that thing just pulled all the way. All depends suspenion to. BUt pat pretty much told you whats the verdict.

yeah...one of the best mods i ever did to the car was the teg gears tranny...made it pull way harder and it was all within the powerband of the engine

Great info guys! Small update: I talked to him at work last week and he told me he is going to have his vtec set to 4200 rpm's, so basically he wants to be in vtec the entire race.....

The B20A trans is considerably shorter than the A20 transmission.

Don't know if the USDM/JDM models are the same, but here's the ratios for the EDM boxes.

A20A
1st 3.181
2nd 1.842
3rd 1.250
4th 0.937
5th 0.771

B20A - F2K5
1st 3.166
2nd 1.857 (1.772)
3rd 1.250 (1.185)
4th 0.967
5th 0.794

Numbers in parenthesis are from the F2X5 box, only found in KX models (I got this one).

What about the final drive? That will shorten up the entire gear range if it's different.

Wow this is interesting. A B-series transmission geared almost identical to the A series transmission. I bet the teg gears with make a big difference in the B20A.
