Hey guys new to this forum... I have an 88 Accord LX that has been well maintained when I got it.. however there is a really bad squeaking sound when I turn left or right, the car doesn't have to be moving to hear it and feel it in the steering wheel. It almost reminds me of a creaking door, and I don't think that it is the power steering because the fluid is good and belt is good... Also I know what a power steering problem sounds and feels like and it is not that... I haven't had it serviced yet but with the little bit of technical experience that I have I think it may have something to do with the tie rod or rack and pinion system. Does anyone have an idea or has anyone had this problem with their 3rd gen accord? Thanks a hell of a lot!!

Could be the ball joints or the upper control arm mounts. Have you had the ball joints inspected?

He said the car didnt have to be moving, which makes me think tie rods or the power steering rack itself. Provided fluid level is good. Maybe the pump is just struggling?

Does the car have to be running (as opposed to moving or not)?

this sound coming from inside or outside the car?

This is 99% of the time coming from the lower balljoints. We see this all the time up north where they pour salt on the roads during winter.

If you don't fix this ASAP, this it what's going to happen:

Broken balljoint, bent fender, popped CV joint and probably a broken brake line. Add the towing costs and you'll have an expensive repair.

This is no joke (Lower ball joints) same thing happened to my 93 civic the car was squeaking when I would turn even sitting still. I thought I was the urethane sway bar end link bushings that I just had put on so I said screw it, but I was wrong! 3 days later the ball joint snapped while my wife was driving the car. Luckily it broke in a Best Buy parking lot and not on the highway. GET THIS FIXED ASAP!!!

Hey thanks for the replies, I haven't had the money to have it looked at it, but it does it even when the car isnt running. Which leads me to believe it is the ball joints or the tie rods like you guys have been telling me... Thanks for the photo, that really put the seriousness of this problem into perspective. Now to the junkyard to find a part... if they even have one..

This has me actually a little nervous.

Mine does the opposite. It turns left slightly while driving upthe road, and on braking it turns left pretty sharply. It does make noises when turning in both directions when its stopped. It doesnt make it while moving, maybe sometimes but not consistantly. I know I need to tighten my Power steering pump belt and that might clear it but I need to inspect the joint for 100% it shudders at 55-60+ MPH.

How much does it cost to replace this joint and how hard is it?
