I was driving my car like usual and the car started to idle like crazy! I saw a little bit of smoke coming from the hood and I started freaking out. After analyzing the problem...I removed the a/c belt and the car is running fine. I'm not entirely sure why or what happened.

The a/c was running nice and cold before it happened and the pulley is still moving. I figured it could have been a lack of R12 that caused it to seize up but I can move the pulley with my fingers so I'm not sure if that's an indication of there still being more coolant or not.

And sorry I've tried searching but couldn't find this specific problem. I'd rather figure out what the issue is with this prior to considering a conversion to R134.

Sounds like a locked up compressor. When the AC is off, the clutch lets the pulley spin freely.
