Nothing to brag about other than being 100% rust free from what i can see. Picked it up in South Carolina while down for the flipped meet. Interior looks pretty good as far as usable black interior pieces. Other than that i plan to start ripping it apart and swapping stuff over soon.

I drove 4 hours further to look at it and was on the fense but took it since it was a "clean chassis" by my standards. My other option was another $1200 and a LXI which looked mint from pictures but this interior is what i need so i guess that was the deal maker. So the fun begins again!

Nice! Is that a matte green or something?

RobT5580
05-25-2010, 03:49 PM
Its supposed to be the typical gray but someone goofed somewhere LOL. At first i thought all the clear peeled off but someone just went over the factory paint. But its going to have a full color change anyways so i am happy that it is a straight chassis otherwise. I have been looking for a while and this was the best i could due at this time. Now that im home 88Lxi68 (Steve) found a local coupe <100K and rust free which is rare to get up in new england. But i have a solid car to build off of so i will accept and run with it.

RobT5580
05-25-2010, 05:51 PM
Craigslist i have been actively searching and i figured since i was going south i should make it a multi purpose trip. I kind of gave up searching in my area due to rust so i started from NC down the east coast.

Nice rob! Why did you want to build another car rather than your red coupe? I thought that was your dedicated project...

Vanilla Sky

That car doesn't look 21 years old. It doesn't matter how much you spent, it's a score. Even the leather looks good. Maybe one bad seam, but that can usually be fixed.

Rob, maybe you want to wrap it up and send it over to me? Ouh, tell me, whats wrong withe Red coup, rust? and how much? I wonder also, what are you going to do ith your RH C2 rimps? I noticed you didnt had them on at the meet.

The red one had more rust than what shows and was more than i wanted to tackle as i plan to do a nice paint job someday.

Mike-I sold you my door panels LOL I might sell the dash (in my attic), and these seats pictured above other than that i don't have much to spare.

I had the funds to get my block to the machinist which i spent on getting this chassis. But it will be getting a ton of stuff that i have been sitting on for many years it seems. I will post more as it changes.

he's not saying? heh I probably drove right by it sometime during the weekend since I drove all the way thru South Carolina. CL I check it everyday and missed seeing that one.. not that I would have bought it since I just bought another 3Geez. Very nice find Rob!

RobT5580
05-26-2010, 02:44 PM
It was $2000 they wanted $2500 it was on CL for a good month easily. Now that im home its growing on me more since its very clean and minimal body work for its age.

I guess i was hoping to swap all my stuff and have a drivable car that looked ok until i could afford a full paint job. And i never wanted to do paint before the engine was 100% to be sure i don't mess anything up.

mykwikcoupe
05-26-2010, 04:01 PM
Im calling dibs on the seats then. Ive been looking for a set of coupe sgr leathers in my area since the grey is close. Thats all My thoughts

RobT5580
05-26-2010, 04:44 PM
They are not OEM covers as they were replaced and the tops are burned but in relatively good shape considering the stock leather never lasts. I was in the attic tonight and i have a few things i may post up for sale.

guaynabo89

man like I said before

First you found and sei!

Second its a manual tranny

Third its a coupe with dark interior

You dont have to mess with no rear disc swaps, no auto to manual conversions, no cancer in the quarters........what else?

You scored big time with the sei regardless of miles. Just remember tat its not only snow/salt that eats the cars out but humidity. So be carefull with car covers etc cause the might hold moisture.

Whats POR-15?

Yeah i am happy now that im home! I should have a garage space pending my new roommate sells his Trans Am. Im hoping to move again in september and have my own garage space as im well overdue.

I think once i register and inspect it i will begin to tear it apart.

POR=Paint Over Rust its a spray on coating that i guess stops rust from spreading. more for areas that already have rust then a preventative.

Glad to see you got your shell Rob. Sorry I didnt get a chance to see you before you left for the meet

06-07-2010, 04:09 PM
Updates......Barely have any free time but it is garaged and not much has occurred other than de-badging it and looking it over. I pulled out a few things and was going to swap some stuff over on the interior but decided to hold off as body work may begin soon. I might pull all of the interior out soon but i have to pull everything out of the red coupe and swap things over so that one is stock including the A20 and B20.

I was going to fit the xenon kit but i found a blemish on the front bumper from the license plate holder so i may look for a better donor.

guaynabo89
06-10-2010, 04:57 PM
how you planning on bonding that kit ontot he bumper?

Just find a decent one from the junkyard man. aftermarkets never line up right and just wind up pissing you off. Besides as long as the top part is fine the rest gets covered up by the kit.

RobT5580
06-11-2010, 01:00 PM
I plan to get urethane glue as mentioned in the past. I did a dry fit last night with spring clamps and it seems pretty good. I think the side skirts are going to be a pain but i want to use them. I am going to a junk yard soon and plan to look around for some donors.

RobT5580
09-22-2010, 01:41 PM
Not to much progress since i bought it but i moved and have a decent garage to work on in now. Here is my current stage fitting the xenon kit and i will bond the rear one soon but i need a new front bumper. Then i will work on the side skirts which will be a challenge as they are not perfect from xenon. They are off a little which will require them to be mounted a little lower so i will have to fill that in and it should look nice.

I had my B20A block in my van on its way to the machine shop but had a major set back so i am trying to bounce back from that. So i hope to have some stuff done over the winter and my goal is to have my B20A ready for tuning late spring. But currently im re-doing my suspension and brakes so i don't have to deal with it later. Plus dusting off parts that have been laying around for years!

Have not made a lot of progress other than mounting the explicit speed traction bar setup and the Ksport coilovers. Here is where i am at now and i plan to work on the xenon front bumper as i need to see if my bumper will be ok repair wise. Note that the front and sides are not glued yet.

Car's coming along nicely. You have such a great platform to build on. Is it impolite to ask what happened to the burgundy coupe in your sig?

RobT5580
12-18-2010, 08:02 PM
I still have it although i took most of the bolt ons off. It still has a NA B20A in it which will be coming out soon. I plan on selling it unless i decide to use it as a commuter car which is unlikely and i don't want a 4th car at my place. The wheel wells are all rusted out which is what pushed me to find a donor chassis. At first i was disappointed but i will say i am happy to have a rust free chassis to build on. It should all start to pull together over the winter.

I was thinking the same thing. The Accord has been stored for over a month :(

Rob, I never realized you couldn't remove the front fender once you've got the side skirts on. It's not too bad but it still sucks. Anyway, I just love the way they look so you definitely have to install them.

RobT5580
12-21-2010, 01:20 PM
My main concern with that was when painting the car but im going to look into pulling the pin out of the hinge. It has a clip that can be removed and in theory the door should have the same alignment when it goes back together.

a lot of body kits i have installed were like that. People like the seamless look for the skirts. IMO if i ever installed something like this i would cut it and re fiberglass it to either lock the fender skirt to the rocker panel skirt or just leave it separate and attach it more like a body molding

Rob, depending of the paint scheme you are looking for i would suggest having the skirts painted off the car rather than removing the door itself.

RobT5580
12-21-2010, 05:53 PM
The skirts are plastic so the fiberglass is out and as far is removing the door its to jamb out the inner door area and the inner chassis area which will be hard to do with the doors on.

My plan which seems the most logical will be to pull the fenders spray the engine bay area/front end. Then assemble the fenders and the side skirts so i can fill in the gaps. Then when i paint the entire outside pull the doors and do all the jambs. Then put the doors back on for the exterior spray. Its not the ideal way but i think its my best option to achieve the results i want using the xenon kit.

Mine would be molded similar to this given mine is a coupe:

http://img227.imageshack.us/i/image523resize.jpg/
http://img805.imageshack.us/i/image525resize.jpg/

So in many ways i wish the xenon kit was fiberglass as it would be easier to mold to my car. However the SEM product i found should do what i need as its designed for that although expensive. I plan to do some work on the front bumper next week which will give me a better idea on how this product would work on the skirts.

Finally got my duckbill spoiler today although im not sure if i will use it or not as its not as straight as i would want. It has some slight defects from internal rust so i may try to work on it.

Front bumper is going to get soda blasted since the paint stripper could not clean up the grill area. Then i can glue the xenon bumper on and move forward.

Another turbo B20?

RobT5580
03-15-2011, 01:31 AM
I can't recall price but it is basically a prelude bar with shorter torsion bars and a longer stabilizer. I plan to make some sort of a transmission mount to work with my B-Series mount. I did run the car with that in place of the front mount which seemed to do the job but who knows how it would be with a boosted B20.

Yeah i saved 90% of my turbo B20A so i figure i might as well keep going until i get it right. Plus this car is much cheaper to build than most even with the custom parts. My Subaru Legacy GT was not cheap to mod and gladly i didn't modify that car although i did thoroghly enjoy it.

I must say it has been getting tough to keep this rolling especially with the past two purchases not being up to par. My brand new carbon fiber hood was virtually destroyed by UPS and i was hoping the duckbill spoiler to be straight and good enough to my standards to use.

Today i pressed out the ball joints, control arms, and wheel bearings to keep things rolling. I need a few things but in the mean time will work on cleaning these up and installing new bushings, bearings, and ball joints.

We had a nice end to the week in New England in the 60's so i had a little itch to get more done. It would be nice to take it out to test out the Ksports some more but the A20A3 is history so i have to keep pushing forward. The worst part about this build is im finding honda discontinued a lot of parts even common coolant hoses so its not a easy as when i did this 6 years ago. I want to either sell my red coupe or drive it if gas climbs high so i can't rape the car for this one either.

The wastegate will be turned 90 degrees as is it will hit the radiator. Speaking of which the mishimoto should be done this week as i had to have new mounting tabs welded on to retain the stock upper mounting bracket.

Its in the works i have always liked the xenon kit but never realized how much work it would be. Thus far the rear is mounted and the front is almost done but the sides will require the most work. The front will need some mods as well to get a clean look as well.

This is many years in the making but i am pushing the project as it has been in limbo for a long time. At this point i feel i may have grown apart from parts of the build but i will push through and see what comes of it since i have 90% of what i wanted 5 years ago. More to come!

Hey Rob! Good to see you are back at it again. Mike Lee and I are still really good friends so whenever 3geez comes up, we always end up talking about your B20 turbo build.

I totally understand where you are coming from (growing apart from the build). Like you, I had a good chunk of the parts needed to do what I wanted, just never got around to finding another shell to start over on (which has changed recently). Your new shell looks really good!

RobT5580
03-30-2011, 01:06 PM
It was kind of a blessing that i sold my Subaru Legacy because it has pushed me to get this going since my daily driver is a work van. The shell is a great base since my red coupe has seen better days (rust wise). I am glad i kept my car though as i considered selling off many of times.

Glad to see you still come around as many of the older guys have moved on. Mike Lee passed the B20A turbo build onto me and i want to see it though as i failed in the past.

RobT5580

It will be turbo again as i made some changes with a full one off custom turbo manifold. If i paint the car first i may put my N/A B20A in so i can drive the car until the turbo is done. If i never got to drive my B20A boosted i probably would have gave up on it long ago. But it was awesome for the short time it was boosted.

I finally got my radiator back from my welder and it came out mint as it still uses the Honda supports on top. I had him cut and make longer upper stems. Now i need to make up lower brackets as the new stems were way off. I plan on having a steel piece made on a brake so it offsets down and uses the factory rubber grommets. Wheel bearings will be in tomorrow so i can get the car back on the ground by the end of the week if all goes well.

If it warms up i want to go pull my N/A B20A out of the red car along with a bunch of aftermarket parts to put that one back to stock to sell. I plan to use that money to buy all the paint supplies for the new build. I am skeptical of selling the red one because the beige interior is still in great shape and it would be a good daily driver so we will see what comes of that.

I have all the brake parts but im not sure what im doing for calipers. I may just slap on my powerstop rotors, axis pads, and ss lines and clean up the calipers for the time being. Things add up fast thats for sure as the front wheel bearings were over $170.

Its not as close at it looks and that was my old Garrett T3 Super 60 which was a good match. I plan to use a slightly bigger turbo this time around. Also i don't have a spare B20A rear mount so the motor is sitting more forward as well. I plan to put two pusher fans on the front of the radiator to keep the rear clear. And i still plan to add a tranny mount using my innovative b-series tranny mount and a custom weld on mount to my B20A tranny.

RobT5580

The red coupe is sitting with a stock B20A in it. I pulled the A20 out of my new coupe and when i find time will swap it out and sell the red coupe. Its in pretty rough shape these days but the new chassis is incredibly straight and rust free. I did drive a long way to get this but it was the only way to get a clean car.

Once i sell the red coupe i plan to take that and buy the paint for the new one and start with the engine bay so i can start to assemble it again. Right now the engine bay is empty and almost ready for paint. But its slow going as always but now i have a garage so it is what it is.

Glad to see you around!

RobT5580
05-23-2011, 03:10 PM
No its pretty bad which is why i decided to get a new chassis. After i blew up the B20A back in 05 ish i left the car outside so it took a beating. I picked up arches to weld in and once i looked over the car it was clear that i needed a donor car.

It has worked out as my new car has never seen snow that i know of and i have keep it garaged since i brought it back to CT. I bought pretty much any available trim piece last summer as many are now not available. So once it gets painted it will be almost all new.

RobT5580

Figured i would post up the little progress since the last post. I have been removing all the trim, side glass, clips, seals, etc for paint prep. Also currently i have the rear suspension arms apart as i tried to install the urethane bushing kit but it didn't go smoothly so im working on that.

explicit made a speed traction bar setup for you huh. Those bitches didn't even email me back when I asked. How much was the setup. Pics now lol jk but yea pics of the traction bar .

Your coupe looks sexy btw

I can't recall price but it is basically a prelude bar with shorter torsion bars and a longer stabilizer. I plan to make some sort of a transmission mount to work with my B-Series mount. I did run the car with that in place of the front mount which seemed to do the job but who knows how it would be with a boosted B20.

I would like more info on the traction bar! Did you just call them up and asked them to mix a few parts together to make a custom traction bar kit? who did you talk to? im pretty interested in buying a set. How do you like the setup?

John@explicit worked it out with me as i basically bought a prelude kit and he swapped out the radius rods as the others would not work. The traction bar is 100% but i did notice my axle rubbed the bolts at some point when the suspension traveled so i need to look into that when i put the engine back in it.

Progress is slow but i try to get a hour or two in a week to keep moving forward. I was hesitant to strip it down but i figure i need to do it so why wait. Im hoping to work on the paint this fall when space opens up at my friends shop. Also im looking at something else for side skirts because the xenon ones would have to be glued and molded to the car which is a issue since you can't remove the fender after.

mykwikcoupe
08-08-2011, 08:04 PM
Rob, how thick are the heims on the hub side. I made a set using 1/2x1/2 heims with Teflon inserts drilled to 10mm to match the bolts. I then used a 1/4in flat stock as a tie between both hub mounts with another 1/2 in spacer and Teflon insert. I'm not sure if that makes sense but it seems low. I haven't tried it with any car yet but it may be shorter or may be taller then yours. Let me know.

RobT5580

Am I seeing a transmission mount?

That is the innovative B-series tranny mount. I plan on using it and having a custom weld on mount made for my JDM B20A since im using the traction bar which technically has a torque mount not a front mount per say. I did drive the car with the explicit traction bar and it seemed fine but im worried once i turbo it that it will be very stressed.

Mike- I have somewhere around 2" off the control arm to the top side of the bolt.

http://i637.photobucket.com/albums/uu98/RobT5580/Picture308-1.jpg

Still have a ways to go but once i get the red coupe running i plan to sell it and buy the paint for the new (gray) chassis to begin the paint process. The engine bay/front end will be sprayed first. I have 90% new trim so it should go back together nicely then i can begin building the turbo B20A once again.

a few things i question? Why did you remove the valve cover baffle, to clean it? How dirty was it? Also why do you have the 2 breathers welded in it? It looks cool and I'm sure the end result with colored stainless will be even better but a single 1/2in breather isn't enough?

Also you are going to have to try and get a rear cross member to match the front, its the only large ugly piece left in the bay that stands out. Might cost a mint but I'm sure you are used to that feeling. It looks amazing otherwise. a truly nice build and worth the wait

If you have had your valve cover sand blasted then i highly recomend this. The blasting media will get into the baffle and damage your internals. As for the breathers you can read dozens of pages on that topic. I plan to get a new breather box to run those lines into.

I don't have any plans for the rear cross member as i have no need to touch that. I need to keep moving forward so im not digging into any new custom pieces LOL. As of now the chassis is 95% as i just need sway bars, camber kits, and a full alignment.

Same problem I'm having here Rob, other things in life are taking priority. I think it is a very very wise decision to re-seam seal the car if you can at this point. It will ensure that all your hard work will last, and will have a nice looking engine bay to boot. I picked up SEM seam sealer today which was not cheap so i will work on that and trailer it to my friends shop soon. I could go further and fill all the spot welds but i need to have an end point so im just going to seam seal it and paint it. If i was doing a wire tuck and all that for a clean engine bay then maybe but on a practical side i need to move forward. Its been a painful journey but im determined to finish it after all this time and i have a nice chassis to build. I will be working with a experienced body man so the end result should be decent. I could spend 4k plus but i can't afford that nor want to spend that much when i can put in some sweat equity and do it for a quarter that.

did you decide what your going to do with the duck bill? also can you give me some info on the traction bar. i am getting my car ready now. hopefully its only down 2 months max

I was thinking of cutting the duck bill and re-building it but i don't have the time to do it so i plan to keep it stock or get an oem spoiler. Are you interested in it? The traction bar was a prelude kit but i made some adjustments with explicit so the only issue i know of is the axle hit the bolt head so i was going to pull out a spacer and shorten his bracket which should work fine. I did read an article on preludepower that explicit has been behind in orders but i had nothing but positive things to say about the company.

yeah i have heard alot of horror stories about explicit lately. i was goin to have them make me a bar for my 94 wagon but they told me 7 weeks i said fuck it. i did order the alternator relocator kit for h22, they told me 3 weeks took about 6 to come. nooks nice but took a while.

i ordered a bb6 traction bar form ebay to try to match up to my accord wagon. ill put it up to the coupe to see how it looks. maybe i can bod this one for both.

why does the spoiler need to be cut? let me know what you want for it.

I was not on a timely schedule but my turn around was much faster even with my alterations. As for the spoiler i read up on some similar porsche spoilers and a guy pulled the metal support out and cleaned it up and repaired the deformed part to correct the issue. I just don't have the time or patience at the point as im working 6-7 days a week and want to get it painted soon. I believe i paid $160 for it and that would be my selling price and your more than welcome to check it out. I just had to many issues with the xenon kit fitment and lack of time so im going to use the front and rear xenon with some Honda side skirts so i can begin painting it.

Its been a while but I'm still hanging on but I'm in the mist of moving to a house now. I did check in on the B20A this week with no update still but its been at the machinist since early Feb. I was wiring a paint booth yesterday and it got me back into the accord theme as i don't have a car to drive other than my work van. I will be moving the accord shortly to the new house so hopefully things fall into place and i get the B20A back soon to build this winter. But even without the engine i plan to progress forward with the body work when i move since i picked up a decent size air compressor this year.

Rob,
when I sent the spoiler to you it was in much better condition than the one I got that I pulled out of the box. I read a similar article from a Porsche enthusiast that repaired the whale tail on his 911? Very in depth and looks like it worked out well. I was reading up on that to convert my spoiler over to a hatch being it is a little short by 3"

Man that machine shop must be running really far behind. Its going on a year so far. Iknow that kind of sucks because its holding up the project right? Also are you gonna paint the car yourself??

RobT5580
08-24-2013, 05:46 PM
The machinist built 88Lxi68's motor and they are a well known shop as i know many that have used them. When i went to drop it off they tried to turn me away but i said its been sitting for years and i was not in a rush. My friend does body work so he will be doing most of the work as i bartered my time with him (electrical). After helping him with his beautiful 280Z recently i still think i will spray the engine bay and get the B20A dialed in before painting the exterior of the car. I imagine i will run into some issues and don't want to damage a fresh paint job. I have a lot of work in the engine bay once its painted since i removed everything so with that and the B20A (once done) i should be busy over the winter.

As for the spoiler a member wanted to buy it so i will see but im sure it can be fixed with a bit of time and patience. Perhaps if i don't sell it i will work on it but im far from that end of the car.

I moved the accord last week and it was fun as my new house is on a hill and the street is a hill as well. But i put the rear bumper back on as i had to pull it off to get it onto the car trailer. Its going to be tight going in and out of the garage as you see in the picture my driveway slopes down and then up so water is forced to go to the left or in the drain. Now i need to get this back on track before the house projects take over my life lol.

Glad to see you still sticking with this Rob. I think your burgandy coupe is the car that really hooked me in to these cars when I first saw it on the racing harts hopefully it wont be too much longer till you get your motor back.

Finally got a hold of the owner of the shop today and he said he has it in the near future as they have finished a lot of jobs so mine is in the line up. I didn't complain as i knew they didn't want to take in my motor at the time due to what that had lined up so I was happy to get it in and hopefully I can get it back to work on this winter.

I guess we all get sucked in and i was drawn to Justin's hatch but going back many years as I was probably still in high school. I still like the lines of the car and appreciate them more and more over the years as I drive other makes and models. I must say Honda had it together in the 80's-90's compared to other manufacturers. I will see this project through even though they seem to be dropping by the day. I enjoyed the little spot light it received and people seemed intrigued by the B20A as many never knew about it. Fortunately I stocked up on parts and bought all the trim available that I could as its not going to be as easy to put back togethter these days as it once was.

I'll second that. Your red coupe was a truly tasteful and professional build. It accentuated the car's aesthetics and exemplified everything these cars could be. Glad to see you're still at it and best of luck finishing the new build.

Sadly your banner may 2010 is when I purchased it. Things have been crazy since then but I still have it and most of the parts. Fortunately I have a great friend who if I called he would do anything for me and is reciprocal which is why my car is moving forward. But my new dilemma is finding new/used bumper skins? In the NE they seem to crush older cars so I'm having issues finding replacements at a reasonable price. But as it sits we will paint the body in the next few weeks without the bumpers unless I find some used ones locally.

It has been a long road to say the least but I appreciate the car more although parts are scarce. Today was the first time I had 12+ Vdc to the chassis in over 5 years if not more. The machine shop has been the biggest downfall other than life but I will keep the pressure on as I don't have an alternative that is at that level. I think these days people appreciate them more as they are disappearing day by day.

At this stage I can say I'm happy I kept it but it would be extremely difficult if I didn't buy all the trim pieces a long time ago. I have found it very difficult to get parts but I'm fortunate to have the majority of what I need. So I will keep piecing this together until it's done.

I'm parting out an 88 LXi coupe to a degree if you still need parts. Pm me with what you need and I'll see if I have it

Fantastic job Rob. Your persistence is admirable! Your work has always inspired me. To date your B20A work has been the most thorough I've come across. Thanks for keeping at it.

I myself will take a different path this time, as over the years I have become more (boring and) concerned with driving comfort, practicality and fuel economy. I'm forced to go OBD1 as I'd really hate going back to vacuum advance ignition. The problem however is that no-one as far as i know has ever been able to extract fuel and ignition tables from a JDM B20A ecu. And tuning the ecu from scratch for all part load driving conditions is something that is not easily done (well). The maps I used on my former B20A were dyno-tuned fine for >85% throttle but for part load they were basically garbage compared to the drive-ability of the stock EDM B20A ecu and vacuum advance ignition. I cannot run the JDM ecu either as I don't have EGR and various other emissions controls and thus the ECU will go into limp mode. Maybe I should go back to vacuum advance after-all..
