oil perfered and weight...

okay so I used the search and couldn't find a topic match so I'll start it myself... I was gunna do an oil change on my 87 hatch (122xxx miles) and I wanted some opinions on oil and weight to use... I own a 74 el co with a SBC 350 and I alwayz use mobil1 and 10w-40... I'm new with the whole carb 4 cyl so I wanted sum options to use!

I've used:
5W-30 (too thin)
10W-30 (perfect)
10W-40 (a bit too thick)
20W-40 (WAY too thick for these cars; bad starts and poor performance; trouble starting)

That's with an '88/'89 fuel-injected coupe, but just throwing some info out there.

Pennzoil. I've used high mileage, but it seemed like it slowed my car a bit, so I used regular.

I always use 5w-30 in mine. You can use 10W-30 so long as the temperatures aren't below 19 degrees, for an oil change before winter definitely use 5w-30 but for summer 10w-30 is perfect. In reality 5w-30 isn't really any thinner than 10w-30, the thinnest either one gets is a 30 weight at operating temperature, the 5 or 10 only comes into play in cold temperatures and while 5 is thinner than 10 it's still way thicker than the 30, (oil viscosities are funny like that).

Whatever full synthetic oil is cheapest, I'm not brand sensitive; 5W- 30 no matter the season.

I've been using Royal Purple 10w-30 for a while now, but I'm thinking of going back to Kendall's High Performance 10w-30(cheaper and just as good).

I have 20W50 in my 'lude right now (same engine as the 3gs) and it's pretty thick; probably too much unless you live in a really hot climate and drive hard. I think next time i'll go back to 40 weight. I only drive it in the summer so the winter weight won't matter. 30 would be good for colder climates. Actually 30 is probably fine for most climates. I tend to romp on the gas pedal though so 40 makes me feel better, for what it's worth. :lol:

My summers are very hot, my winters are usually pretty cold. I keep 10W-30 in all year.

if the car is in good shape doesn't really burn any oil and you love it get motorcraft 10W30

if the car is a peice of shit run accel non detergent 20w50 (it cheap as fuck and my 4g is a piece of shit so i run it lol)

oh also if you live in a hot climate you may want to go to 10w40 or 20w40 depending on your night weather. (hot climate being above 110f for a couple weeks lol, and if it goes over 120 go with 20w50
