im going to be doing a cold air intake soon. need some info that i couldnt find. there are 4 vacuum hoses that connect to the factory intake, two on pass side that go to black box, and two on driver side, dont remember where they go. what do i do with these vac hoses after removing factory intake?
thanks

i actually just switched over and i only had to worry about one hose and that came from the front of 180 degree bend tube coming from the air box going to the intake manifold. all i did was put a breather filter on the valve cover and connect a line from the two coolant outputs... and i didnt do the whole CAI i just used short ram bacause its easy and only cost me 40$

heres some pics that should help

my 89 and 88 did not have any lines going to the stock airbox, just the one from the VC to the factory air pipe.
I'm sure that you will be able to cap off the lines you have since which ever CAI you go with would only have the one single vacuum line.

What? It only has one that goes to the VC...

two circled in red go to yellow and green circles. engine dies if i plug them, and has idle issues if i just leave them open.

well have you thought about installing it without if nothing happens? those can be removed if you find another lxi in the junkyard but if it needs it then you gonna have to come up with a way to make it work but should be easy on these cars.

the two that go to the black box i already removed. the other two i guess i will have to come up with something.

once you remove the actual box n da original intake hose youll notice that all you need is the one that allows air into your valve cover the others are unneccesary with the cold air system...
heres my setup its only cost 40$-50$ and it runs effieciently
straight intake tubing:11.00 autozone
spectre intake filter:21.99 autozone
2.5" to 3" coupler: 10.00 pepboys
mini breather filter+90 degree pcv hose:roughly 16.00
clamps 2.99 large for a pack of 3 ull need for coupler and filter
clamps 1.99 small youll need 3-6 for coolant hoses and mini breather filter
5/16 hose 1.99 ft at autozone
heres some pics of the original stuff to remove:

you'll notice in both pics there is a metal piece connected to the valve cover, two coolant valves and the intake.. you have two options with this 1)remove 2) cut i recomend remove its easier and saves the hassle.
upon removing the metal piece you will need to take your mini breather filter and place it on the valve cover (dont forget to do this: REMOVE THE ORIGINAL RUBBER FITTING FROM THE MINI FILTER AND INSTALL THE PCV ITS CRITICAL!!) then take the 5/16 coolant hose and connect it to the valves... heres pics for that:

then install the itake in this order from the manifold to the left: coupler, stright tubing, then filter.
ill post pics tomoro morning of the final config to show you but it seems like alot but its not just a little time consuming 1-2 hours.
o n by the way
DO NOT FORGET THE CLAMPS YOU WILL HAVE ANTIFREEZE EVERYWHERE TURST ME!!

umm. i was the one who posted on ur thread about the metal tubes. i know all of that. im talking about the two vacuum hoses that go to the factory intake box on the driver side. if i cap them the car doesnt run. if i leave them disconnected but open it idles high (~2000-2500rpm)

also its an 87. apparently that makes a difference

minus 20% employee discount :D

thats a super short ram. looks good. im going to do the full cold air intake. didnt really want to have to cut it up and put chunk of chrome on my shiny blue pipe. oh well guess i will have to. unless i can figure something else out.

lol i wish i had a 20% discount lucky... but anyways that would be just about your only option unless u feel like drilling and welding into place some male valves

are the plastic ones on the piece you have removable? if so i will buy one, remove the plastic ones and drill holes to use them.

two circled in red go to yellow and green circles. engine dies if i plug them, and has idle issues if i just leave them open.
>> on the first one just drill 2 holes in the new intake piping and just glue the lines in there... easy fix and doesnt get you in trouble with cops

>>on the second one what i did was just unscrewed the little box in red from the filter housing... just let the box hang around... problem solved.. it will make noise but just find a way to make it quiet... try stuffing it with sponge or something... this is exactly the setup i had on my 87 lxi

i think the box that the second to go into has a nipple on it. if so then i will get a breather filter to put on it.

the ones going to the black box pull filtered air for some of the solenoid valves, if you plug them the valves won't work right,if you leave them open, dirty air will be allowed through the valves, and eventually pulled through the intake by vacuum. if they connect to the black box they need to be connected back to the tube feeding air into the engine, after the filter
