Alright fellows, this is the ride we're talking about on this tread. I documented my entire month of work on my accord for my 3geez homie's viewing and learning pleasure. Although i'm already done and back on the road i finally had the time to post what i did. My engine spun a rod bearing so i pulled a motor and rebuilt it from the inside out in my garage @ home. I replaced the rack and pinion, rebuilt the engine, ported and polished the head, did some motor mount modification, relocation of the battery and coolant resevor tank, replaced all fr. suspension bushings with polyurathane, switched rear sway bar from a vigor, powder coating, 5 speed swap, and a lil something here and there along the way of a 1 month long build. But since we are in the suspension sec then I'll begin with the those upgrades...For the rear, i swapped the swaybar out for the 92-94 acura vigor 16mm bar. the bushings from the vigor are necessary. Also the hole on the frame bushing bracket needs to be elongated in order for it to bolt up to the frame. the endlinks are from the vigor but you can use either one.

In the front I have the 7/8 se-i bar with polyurathane frame bushings and endlinks.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2697.jpg

I also replaced all of the front suspension bushings with polyurathane and new balljoints and upper control arms. I even installed polyurathane bump stops in the front.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2784.jpg

I even installed polyurathane bump stops in the front cause it was bending the tip of the upper control arm.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2777.jpg

Btw the ignition coil had to be moved over a bit for to make room 4 the bump stop on the pass side. The driver side was clear.

I went a bit nuts with the urathane and filled all 4 new motor mounts with windshield urathane. Works like a charm.

You do know that the front mount is an oil filled mount right? So filling it with poly wont help it any.

you can use a rear mount up front with an 86-87 mount bracket that bolts on to the block, just fill it up with poly and it pwns the gas gas charged one :) i did a write up on how to switch a few years ago it should be somewhere on here

but great job so far man

Alright guys i'm back and picking up at the 5 speeds swap. But first I must thank nick (importdomestic) for the advice and encouragement about how easy it actually is to do. the stock auto ecu worked fine with it too. The only thing that I noticed which may or may not have anything to do with it is the throttle gets slightly stuck at various places and the gas pedal does not engage smoothly when the engine is on. Once its off the pedal moves smoothly. Also the ecu is telling me that there is something wrong with the tps (throttle position sensor). Anybody know if there is something else I need to change in order for the engine to run as if the car was originally a 5 speed?

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2782.jpg

I also took advantage of having everything off the car by cutting "1.5 inches off of the shifter although i wish I would have cut "2 but it looks and feels great.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2791.jpg

I used a bolt with near matching diameter, grinded the ends to a cone shape but left enough threads so that i can use them to bite the inside of the pipe as i screwed the threads in both sides.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2793.jpg

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2794.jpg

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2795.jpg

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2796.jpg

After putting the two pieces together I twisted to the right to close the gap.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2799.jpg

Then tack welded them and sprayed primer to seal the deal.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2821.jpg

I also put in a stage 2 F1 clutch kit.

On to the next one. I relocated the battery for a lower center of gravity and to make space for the intake.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2863-1.jpg

I put a piece of rubber mat on top of the mounting plate for the battery to rest on to keep the bolts from wearing holes into the battery.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2864-1.jpg

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2866-1.jpg

Consequently I had to also relocate the coolant overflow tank by running about 5 feet of hose, zip tied it to the fire wall and bolted it there too.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2867-1.jpg

Aside from having to move the a/c hose over a bit in order to remove the battery it all worked out perfectly and is very secure.

Oh yeah...The rack and pinion, tie rod ends, lower and upper ball joints were replaced too. It wasn't anywhere near as hard to replace as I and many others thought it was gonna be. Stay tuned. There's more to come after these messages....

Well guys its time for the motor rebuild...first I'll begin by showing you the reason why I rebuilt. Then go on to show you what I did. I spun a bearing which had a horrific internal chattering sound. I rode with that sound for 3 months. As the sound got louder during the passing months i decided to park the car and get a donor engine and tranny before i ended up with a hole on the side of my block.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/100_2692.jpg

There wasnt any bearing left in the connecting rod (top) that went out, most of it was in the oil pan.

I powder coated my wheels a year ago so I did the same to the valve cover and headers cause it last so long and stays looking good and cleans real easy. The cover color name is "blue ice explosion" classified as a flip flop color and the headers is high temp muffler gray. Im running NGK iridium plugs and I installed 244cc fuel injectors(170 stock) So the upcoming new mod is going to be an MSD w/a blaster coil and an adjustable air/fuel ratio controller piggyback. A friend of mine says he can chip my ECU...anyone know if its worth chipping or should I just do the OBD1 conversion. My not so distant future plans are to turbo charge so any pointers on which upgrade or changes i should make would be appreciated. Well boys that concludes the show. Thanks for tuning in.

Looking good. Must be nice to have it back up and running, and props for doing all the engine work yourself too.

As for ECU... OBD0 cannot really be "chipped" properly, best to save the money and convert to OBD1, especially if planning to boost in the future.

So it's been what, about a year now since I called you about you selling this damn thing on craigslist and got you on the board. Any regrets about finding your way to the light and keeping the 3G? I know I'm happy you kept it, and are giving it some much-needed attention.

I strongly recommend the HID upgrade. It make a world of difference. I got them from ebay a good while back. I think i paid like 35-40 buck but they suck without the HID. With the HID kit it really projects a beam that is impressive. I got the 8k bulbs which is perfect cause it's mad bright and has just a slight tint of blue so it doesn't call the cops attention. The bad thing bout these conversion kits is that if it rains with the lights down, water gets in them which is why the driver side is a bit dimmer than the right. The glass gets dirty and dingy on the inside and it's very hard to clean cause of the projector lens inside.

An F250 bumped me in the rear 2 months after my engine rebuild but i got 3k for the damages so next weekend my baby will be going in for a cosmetic over haul and will be back in a fresh coat of black. The last thing I did to it was install a race cat w/ 2.25" piping to the dual canister dual 3" tips....and it sounds so mean! Now I can really hear the dizzy advancing by the vacuum. It sounds like a V-TEC @ 3k RPM and up.

Those lights have zero cutoff. Wtf, that's *horrible*.

If you're going to do HIDs at least retrofit some oem projectors so the optics/engineering are retained.

Rebased h4s in shitty ebay housings is not the way to go. You're a danger to other people on the road since they can't see shit if you're headlights are blinding them.

Sickest3G
10-31-2011, 08:28 PM
Knock Knock...Im back. As for the guy with the sensitive eyes....the lights do retain there optic engineering by having a projector lense in the center but fortunatly for ME i have the best of both worlds cause not only do i have a focused beam of light pointed to the ground ahead of me but i also have light shining on everything else in my path unlike oem retrofitted projectors. And fortunatly for you, "sensitive eye guy", you're not a moth so you dont have to worry about being blinded by me coming toward you cause you CAN look straight ahead instead of at my lights.
Anyways...back to the subject.... I blew my head gasket a few weeks ago and since i have to take the head off i decieded to put in some work by adding some HP to the the new a20. I sent my camshaft to colt cams for a stage 2 triflow grind and i already customized the b16 manifold i had laying around waiting for an occassion like this. I'll be port matching the head and mani and port and polishing the intake mani and exhaust side of the head cause the intake is already done. I'll also be getting a 3 angle valve job and new "bronze" valve guides instead of stock ones. I still have like 10-12 days before the cam comes back so if any one has any suggestions or questions now is the time before it all come back together. I also made some hot cosmetic changes but will be posting pics and details in the next week or so stay tuned.

Alright guys a couple days ago i finished up the work i set out to accomplish but I have reached a dissatisfying point...after all vacums and plugs were connected the engine doesnt want to rev past 4k while driving. it's suggish and back fires from time to time and the ecu is throwing a number 1 code (oxygen sensor) but that may be due to the fact that there's no EGR anymore. The cylinders have 200psi theres good fire and air. The engine timing is on point...tdc. I advanced and retarded the dizzy all the way to the fire wall which seems the best position as far as performance goes. I wired the map sensor from the black vacum box to the one on the b16 intake. These are the specs on the COLT TRIFLOW CAM:
PRIM INT 280° .390 LIFT
SEC INT 268° .383 LIFT
EX 288° .390 LIFT
Recommended for carburetor engine. However, it will work on F.I. with a noticeable idle
and possibly a slight surge. Strong mid range. No mods are required
Power band is 3500 - 7500 R.P.M.

Due to these problems i will be doing an obd1 conv. to best handle these current problems and any other limitations surrounding the obd0 system. But in the meantime can any one shed some light on why the engine has such poor performance?

Here are a couple pics of the powder coated intake, thermastat housing ,fuel rail and headers. More detailed pic about the build coming soon.

Now I am just gonna throw this out there, but have you checked all grounds to make sure they are secure, and touching the right type of metal(no paint, ect)? Every time I have done a swap, the grounds have ended up being the main source for most of my issues.

No I haven't checked them again but i will although im sure they are tight. I did readjust the valves today and it runs alot better than it did before but still no power after 2.5-3k RPM and it accelerates slow. Right now im rechecking all the vacum line to make sure the nessesary ones are hooked up but what i would like to know is how to make sure the b16 mani MAP sensor is wired correctly to the stock wires. Any takers on this?

Here's the b16 intake before powder coating but after retro fitting onto a20 block and polish:

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/CIMG0231-1.jpg
http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/CIMG0250.jpg

And after powder coating:
I drilled another hole on the stock accel. cable bracket, used some long bolts with long spacers, and bent it a bit to fit perfect.

http://i784.photobucket.com/albums/yy121/SICKEST_3G/CIMG0262.jpg
I tapped a hole for the intake temperature sensor cause it didnt have a hole and all I had to do was run a wire from the int. temp. sen. to the plug which doesn't reach the sensor and the same for the fast idle valve which now sits to the back of the intake instead of the front like the stock location. But like i mentioned before, it runs but it doesnt have good performance. It needs to be tuned cause i did a stage 2 triflow cam and a B16 mani and a port and polish at the same time. I will most likely be doing an OBD1 swap if I cant get it to run right. But it may be a couple weeks before I have the amount I need to get it all done...btw I got a damn good price on the: (100) dyno tune, (50)chipped p06 ecu and (50)conversion harness and a (100) distributor ...300 total or less if i help with the tune and install. He said 200 for just the dyno tune tho.

Is anyone running a similar setup with OBD 0? I need some pointers on how to get it to run right without the OBD 1 swap. Thanks.....More updates to come.

I ran something similar to you. I also had an Accel coil and a fuel pressure regulator.

The fact that you have to turn the distributor all the way one direction tells me that the timing belt is probably off a tooth. This is quite common and will create exactly the conditions you describe. I see you have an adjustable cam pulley. This may make things more tricky if it doesn't have the alignment marks on the sides like the stock pulley. How did you align the timing belt?

I don't have an accel coil but I do have an adjustable fuel presure regulator. It does seem to be off timing a bit but the belt was put on with the #1 piston at top flywheel at the T and the dizzy at #1. And the cam gear is at the center/stock. I just finished switching back to stock map sensor again to see if it would change but all it changed was the idle. It almost turns off. So I switched to the b16 sensor again cause it didn't help any. One thing I found that as off is the B16 sensor is running 8v on both + wires not 5 and 0.5 like the book says it should read. Can anyone else shed some light on this subject?

also check your TPS. on hondas if your tps is wired wrong or not even reading voltage your ecu will cut out at 4k. very very common.

Is any one on here nowadays using a B16 manifold on the A20 with OBD-I system? If so, let me know which map sensor you're using and how you have the map and tps sensor wired.

I am using the Victor x edelbrock b16 intake with a stock map sensor on an edelbrock 65mm throttle body. I had the wires extended from the black box location through the cabin and out the firewall to the manifold. hope it helps

Sickest3G
11-21-2011, 09:36 AM
It does help but it doesnt cause im wondering why you would run a wire to the mani from the black box if you're using a stock map sensor. Are you using the b16 map (on the tb) or the a20 one in the box? If it's the a20 map then does it have its own vacuum line or is it shared with a T? If you're using the b16 map then how are the wires hooked up to it? Thanks.

mykwikcoupe
11-21-2011, 06:08 PM
I am using the b16 and some come with a remote map sensor others mounted on the tb. All 3 wires go to the black box, use a tb with a remote map sensor and mount it near the stock black box location or extend the wires from the black box location to the tb with map sensor on it

I have the B16 Map wired to the stock plug. Does the stock Map or tps wire plug have to be rewired to match with the B16 map or tps sensor?

I'm having an issue with the mods i did. The engine has no acceleration power after 3k. It spits and sputters like its misfiring when i give it more than 1/4 throttle. The idle is loopy but doesnt die. the tps reads .4 @ idle and 4.8 at w.o.t. when I switch between stock map and b16 map it runs the same no difference. All vacums are hooked up to there proper place. the only ones that are plugged up are the egr, and intake dashpot. All 4 cylinders have 200 psi and the dizzy timing is on point at tdc, with the two vac lines disconected from the dizzy and plugged like the book spesifies, and the adj. cam gear is at its stock position. It accelerates in neutral all the way to 8k but not with more than 1/4 throttle. The only code the ecu is throwing is 12 for the egr but theres no egr anymore. Can you fellas help me find a resolution to this problem. PM me for my number to go into extensive details about it. Thanks for the help.

i always like black on the coupes and hatches.

did a shop spray that? Not to bad mouth the paint, but if a shop did that i would be livid as hell, looks like an orange with all that peel on the bumper and the trunk lid and the bottom of the bumper and pocket around the muffler barely has any color.

id start trying to wet sand that down in a few months when the paint fully cures. I'd be careful, the way the orange peel looks makes me think there "dry" coats so there won't be as much material.

Yeah it's not a great paint job but the last one was free and the rear was redone. The guy that did it, painted it again but didnt do much better than the first time but it is better than the first job. He buffed the trunck and he screwed it up but the spoiler i had on it before is going back on soon. I sure wish you were in tampa cause you sure would have been the one doing my body work. Even with that paint job, your car looks really good! IMO you should smoke out the tail lights to match the front ones. It sounds like you may have a fuel problem, have you checked if you have good fuel pressure/fuel flow.

Is there a dirstrubutor that would be better than another to do this convo? What I've got in the works is an H22 dizzy with external coil, a P06 w/an s100 chip that will be chrome tuned.
