View Full Version : 13" vs. 14"

I'm thinking of putting the 14" wheels off my trashed '89 on my '87 which has 13" on it.

My thinking is that it'll go better in the snow with the bigger sneakers.

Anybody know if that's true, and if I'll get any unwanted side affects?

Actually, narrower tires with a taller sidewall is better for the snow. The difference between the 13s and 14s won't be noticeable so go ahead and swap them. It will handle better out of the snow and look better too.

I think what would matter more is which one has the better tread in this case. I would go with those for the snow or just get a set of dedicated snow tires for the 13s.

Yeah 13" and 14" will look very similar. The bigger the rim, the bigger difference you will notice between 2 sizes.

You can get better rubber for 14s than you can for 13s for the spring-summer months :)

i don't know, i agee with pearldrop on this one. for snow you definitly want a skinnier tire, unless you are running true snow tires with serious tread. big tires with little tread are going to float on top of the snow rather than dig into it adn grip.

Thank you to the people that replied with answers in this post. It's not a topic I'm qualified to answer, no snow here. I drove on snow,....once. I thougt it was kinda over rated.:lol

what kind of snow are you gonna be drining in? becasue for the snow here in new jersey, which tends to not accumulate on the road too much, i found that my 205/50/15s are great. i have firestone firehawks that have a ton of deep tread on them and my car is like a snowmobile if you are a careful driver.
for heavy snow though, skinnier is still better.

Well, I'm probably the only person in the world to try to put 13" rims on an 89 lx-i....anyhow, it don't work.

The 14's off it fit just fine on the '87, but the 13''s off the '87 won't go on the '89. Near as I can figger the brake caliper set up is bigger.....so now I gottas go buy some 14"s...cause I need to have something on my junk so I can move it around.

Next project is to see if the bumpers I just took off the '89 will fit the '87........

ooooh... you just reminded me of something...

i have an 86 right now, if i were to track down 14" could i buy 88-89 rotors and get a little better stopping power?

the rotors are damn cheap so this might be a fun smart upgrade!

Hmmmm...I dunno much about this stuff, but from what it seemed to me you will need the whole caliper set up..(whatever the heck that's called)

When I was trying to stuff the 13" rims onto the '89 it hit on the front of the whole unit.

Guess I'm gotta buy some 14" rims...maybe I should look in the for sale section...see if anybody putting bigger ones on has 14"'s to sell...
