View Full Version : Plastic Shields Holding Water

I just bought my carbed 89 Accord a few weeks ago (first Honda I've ever bought), and when i changed the oil I got completely soaked with water when I bumped one of the plastic shields under the front of the car. My first guess was that it must be leaking coolant, but it was plain/clean water. I drove it for a week and the mount on the speed sensor deiced to snap off , so I thought it would be a good time to put all new exhaust and some other odds and ends while I tried to track down a speed sensor for cheap. It had rained some since I last drove it (never drove it in the rain), and I wanted to see if it was still holding water. Sure enough when I pulled down the plastic piece, water poured out everywhere. I decided to remove the large piece that goes under the radiator, but after the next rain storm the smaller pieces still had water trapped above them. Any idea of where it is draining down from? Last week I bought another 89 Accord, but this one is fuel injected and I'm going to swap everything over (yes, I realize how much of the pain in the ass this is going to be :)), so I'm going to be fabricating a CAI. I know hydrolocking can happen on cars with a CAI, especially when the area where the filter is going to be likes to fill up with water ;) so I really need to try to figure out how it is getting in there. If all else fails I can just drill some holes, or remove the plastic shields completely (less weight = more speed :rice:).

they should have drain holes, you are talking about the splash shields? thats just water collecting in them. you can drill some small drain holes in them if you like. it won't hurt anything.

I didn't notice any holes, but if they are there they are most likely clogged. I think the previous owner thought Hondas where good for off roading as there was mud everywhere under the car as well as inside and a nice big scrape on the oil pan from where it bottomed out on something :wtf:.

just about ever one of these cars has an oil pan scrape, or the down pipe is dented. just remove the shields and wash them good with a garden hose.

Forgot about the down pipe scrape, my old one was smashed in right at the bend :D. I'll clean them out real good, and probably drill a few small holes just to be safe.

^ I tried that approach, but my engine would get soaked in the rain.

Sometimes I swear I don't have a brain :dunno:. I forgot about the fact that I have no fog lights, or anything covering the holes so the rain was just blowing into there. Should still drain out though, but most likely they are full of rocks and mud and the drain holes are blocked.

Edit: I definiatly don't have a brain... I typed fog logs instead of fog lights........... :uh:

There should be two small slits on the far sides. If you want, tomorrow (in the light) I'll take a picture so you know where they are and what they look like. They're easily clogged with water, haha.

Automatic engine washer? Sounds like something you would see on one of those late night infomercials .

I stuck my hand into the opening where the "fog logs" where, and both shields are filled with rocks and glass :thumbdn:.

but I've never seen a tomato with fog lights, unless it's one of those red new beetles, or possibly a new smart car
