View Full Version : High Idle on cold start?

Since I bought my 86dx it has always had a high idle on cold start.
Usually I could just wait a few seconds and tap the gas and it would idle down to 1200-1000, until recently.
Now I do that and it raises the idle to like 2500 and it takes a few minuets for it to come down to 1500-1700.
After a couple min of driving it comes down to normal.

A vac leak would cause high idle symptoms all of the time right?

Is this a common problem with an easy fix?

Its normal.. Let it idle high (2500 rpm max), let it fully warm up, then tap the gas to bring it down (may have to tap twice)..

It's 100% normal, and Honda made it that way on purpose to warm the car up faster.

Oh, cool. Thanks. I thought maybe my old stock carb was shitting the bed. And the car does warm up very quickly.
It's weird though, that it fluctuates. Until recently it never got over 2200 and it is getting up to 2500 now.
Oh well, I'd like to do a DGEV swap sometime this winter anyhow.

Have you tried some carb cleaner? I don't know carbs, but I wouldn't really want the car idling that high. Are you experiencing other symptoms as well?

My view of Honda carbs is that they need regular rebuilds to keep them running properly. We have some members who are much better with carbs than I am. I would defer to their advice.
