You can access and replace 5th gear from a cover on the tranny, no need to pull it I believe. Do a search for the posts that tell you how.

it is, don't use oil any more, use the Honda manual transmission oil, it came out after the car was made, much better, or redline manual oil, or syncromesh. they all have special friction modifiers to make the syncros work better, plain oil doesn't have these. when the car was built motor oil was the best choice, but the other oils are an upgrade. the syncros need a specific amount of friction to work

Well my car made it home OK. I'll be opening it up so I can see that all the teeth on 5th are peined smooth.

I wear glasses and I have to shave my palms weekly. :eek5:

Actually, I crushed my left ring finger in the sliding door of my van. It was pretty gross, and painful. I have 2 pins going through my finger right now, and I'm out of work because of it.

Let me know how it goes with fixing the 5th gear, cause I have the same issue, and I don't want to pull apart the box if I don't have to.

Check the splines on the shaft real good while you have the gear off. Sometimes they get munched and if they do, you'll have to replace the shaft which is a whoooole lot more work.

Remember that one of the locknuts is left hand thread, before you cut it off and have to machine a new one like I did.

I'm not looking forward to that.

Most of the time the splines are fine. Just check it while you have it open.
