View Full Version : oem wheel choice

Okay, I want everyone's truthful opinions. I'm going to put some money into my car, including suspension and making it look as good as possible. One main thing I'm looking into is wheels. I'm definitely staying oem, but I want to know what people think looks best on these cars. Yes, I have read about and understand the effects of different weights and offsets of wheels.

steelies (14", 15" or 16")
LX-i sawblades/turbines (14")
SE-i alloys (14")
Prelude 4WS 6-spoke blades (*current) (14")
Prelude Si 5-spoke blades (see Joay's car) (15")
Fat-Fives (15")
GSR blades (15")
LS mesh (15")
2006-2008 Honda Fit Sport wheels / EP3 Civic wheels (15")
2010 Honda Insight EX wheels (15")
Si's (also seen on 2001-2005 Civics) (16")
2008-present Honda Fit Sport wheels (16")
HFP Fit wheels (maybe, pricey) (16")
Mugen Fit wheels (maybe, pricey) (16")

Edit: Poll added.

I have the option (currently) to get a mint set of turbines for like $50 (no tires). I can swap my tires onto the turbines and sell my blades for the same prices or more (rare). I could also fork out a more for the other wheels. The HFP and Mugens would have to wait a little while, haha.

Did you know the Insight's 15" wheels are 4x100 with a 45mm offset? :D

Whatever you end up doing, I'd stay away from 14". I just bought new tires for my SE-i stock wheels, and the tire choices weren't all that great. Ended up with Michelin Pilot Exalto's, but I wish I would have had more alternatives.

If you're going with a modded suspension, bear in mind that the larger the wheel diameter, the smaller the tire sidewall. Smaller sidewalls mean less compliance, so a very large wheel together with a drop will reduce the ride quality. Depending on where you live, bad roads with a very stiff suspension can make driving unpleasant. I live in suburban CT, so I'm good with my 1" drop + revalved Bilsteins. But drive into NYC with its shitty roads (overlapping patches, potholes, poorly done transitions), and it's a whole other story. My wife makes me take her car when we go in.

I'd so go for steelies with those contour caps, and the H logos.. though, i only have the H logos.
i'm prety sure we've all seen enough pictures of my car to know what they look like...

The BMW rims look prety coiol, but they're bmw ... so why wouldya put em on a honda? thats just my opinion, though. Otherwise they'd probabily look prety nice on a 3gee sedan

lx-incredible runs hx's on his 88 lx-i coupe... he did not have to grind anything off the caliper or the wheel.

also, check out http://www.diamondracingwheels.com/

not terribly expensive either.

for my money, oem wheels are gsr blades or the 16" hfp's... but at 110 a wheel for the hfp's new on ebay i'd rather go with some of those diamond wheels or the gsrs.

what would rotors have to do with wheel fitment?

Smaller rotors = availability for smaller wheels? Aren't rotors the circle part that spins with the wheel? If he has smaller rotors, the caliper will be closer to the center, thus having more room for a smaller wheel. Right?

wh1skea
12-21-2010, 01:40 PM
yeah, those.

And no, the calipers bolt to the steering knuckle. Their position doesn't change based on the rotor.

stat1K
12-21-2010, 01:45 PM
someone needs to change their own brakes don't they?

his aftermarket rotors are exactly that, there is no change in size. if we could just go up or down at will we would. this is why if you read any brake thread the brake rotor upgrades are larger and require a bracket to mount to.

charliekuney
12-21-2010, 01:45 PM
Wouldn't they have to be moved or adjusted to work with a smaller rotor, though? Else they would just clamp over nothing?

stat1K
12-21-2010, 01:47 PM
also, if by your logic this were the case, that would mean that no 14" wheel would fit because the caliper would hit the basin of the wheel not the back of the face which is what scrapes when you run the HX wheels on an integra with larger brakes.

stat1K
12-21-2010, 01:47 PM
your brake rotors are 1 size.

there are no smaller or larger sizes that would work without said bracketry.

exactly, because they are 13".

I still find it funny that Charlie tried to justify that because angus had aftermarket brembo rotors the wheels would somehow fit. As if someone bought aftermarket rotors that they wanted to be smaller instead of larger like people actually do lol.
