Got a used short block from the junkyard. Looks pretty good. But there's one or two small scratches on the surface of the block. I know normally you're not suppose to use sealant. But for the scratches, should I use those copper sealant on the head gasket? :lock:

Have the block decked. That's really the only way to get a good surface.

get 10 thou whipped off it or how ever much it needs to get it flat.
you should never have to use sealant on a head gasket

How bad are the scratches really? If the deck is flat, you can probably draw file the high spots off, and let the gasket do what it's supposed to; seal imperfections between mating surfaces.

Or get it decked, the "for sure" way to ensure it seals.

Do not use sealant on a head gasket.

If the scratches are small, get the block decked to least amount possible to remove them.

That Indian schellac is something of the past & DO NOT recommended using it.

I have used copper head gasket spray on a copper head gasket set, that is a totally different application.
