Let me know if this is frowned upon or if I should locate it else where, but unfortunately I can't justify full membership to create a project profile at the moment, but I did figure pretty much everything I plan to do to her is going to be appearance related ;)

Anyway, here she is! My new family member "Betsy" ... The new "new family" wagon ;) (Me and my girlfriend are expecting our first baby :D ).

I made a promise to her previous owner (the chattiest woman in the world  ) that I'd keep her name and take good care of her. So I can't let her down... In so many words, she actually told me she'd hunt me down otherwise lol.

Apologies for the pictures. I only had a small window between showers the day after I bought her and it was getting dark already. I'll get some better ones soon as these don't do her any justice...

She's an '89 12 valve EX-2.0i Accord Aerodeck running the A20a4 engine (122bhp non-cat version) in what I think I'm right in saying is a rather rare Monterey Green? With 4wALB (Now that's old skool ), cruise control, electric windows, electric sunroof, poppy-uppy lights :D and "coolness" 8)

My first impressions were... I love her! :D She's obviously got a few issues being nearly 22 years old, but they are minor. The downpipe flexi is blowing quite badly, but I ordered a new one as soon as I got home on day one (for £55 delivered ;) Might not mean anything to you, but that's cheap compared to the Prelude prices I'm used to paying ). The "ALB" light is on pretty much permanently, but hopefully that shouldn't take too long to track down. The nearside (I think) CV joint has just started knocking, but I'll get that sorted out in the next MOT in April, and the aerial isn't extending or retracting on command, but again that shouldn't take much to sort. And that's pretty much it mechanically. Other than pulling away a bit sluggish due to the blowing down pipe, she really goes! ;) And the engine is smooth as you like and purs amazingly. You can tell it's had a FSH.

Bodywork wise, there's a few more issues than expected, but again there's nothing serious...

Both rear clusters have condensation, but that should be a simple case of removing them and drying them out. Maybe resealing them if they need it...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0012.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0011.jpg

There's some surface specs of rust just starting to develop below the tailgate...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0014.jpg

There's some paint-wear along the window trims...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0017.jpg

Of course there's rust on the rear arches :) But it's not too far along to cause too much concern...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0019.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0021.jpg

The front bumper has dropped on the nearside, but it's simply missing a fixing...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0020.jpg

The rear bumper has obviously dropped a fixing as well, and it's been tied back with a nice screw  (Which is quite literally the only de-facing of the otherwise completely standard car)...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0022.jpg

And finally the passenger door has a very subtle crease in it...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0018.jpg

The lot I intend to put back right :)

Modification wise, I don't intend to do a great deal... I have Patch (the lude) for that, and being so rare, remaining as OEM as possible only adds to her charm.

I do however want to fill in those wheel arches some what...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0003.jpg

... but don't feel I'd be detracting too much from it's original style if I lower it as I'd be following the original release pictures ;) ...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/1985_Honda_Accord_Aerodeck_3.jpg

I also think they look pretty with tinted rear windows 8) which was also an optional extra. Not quite as dark as this though...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/im000597.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/dgfhj.jpg

And the only other mod will possibly be some pretty deep dish retro rims  But we'll see ;) ... They to will have to be just as rare, so we'll see what wonders ebay has to offer in time

Anyway, that's Betsy. Hope you like her :D

First job... Fit the new downpipe...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0032.jpg

I was a bit apprehensive about the 2 to 1 section at first as it's not quite a mandrel bend  ...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0030.jpg

But it's exactly the same as the existing one (OEM or not) so I thought what the hell...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0041.jpg

The existing one was blowing pretty bad and I was losing a lot of power, and here's why...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0039.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0040.jpg

As always I was dubious about undoing the downpipe nuts, not knowing what condition they were in and when they were removed last. So off I popped to Tool Station to get some penetrating oil after the second nut refused to budge. Gave them all a good spritz and had a cuppa. By the time I returned they all pretty much just span out :D

Next task was to make a couple gaskets. I had some left over gasket from another job so I cut it to shape...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0043.jpg

Gaskets and new pipe in and voila!

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0044.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0045.jpg

I took the car for a spin to check all was well and the difference is amazing! The car really has some go!... And purs beautifully.

Nafeman

After I returned, the next job on the cards was fitting the towbar. Bumper had to come off first. Not quite as obvious to remove as a Prelude bumper, but I figured it out in the end...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0055.jpg

Whilst removing the bumper, a slight issue became apparent. The Offside arch under the bumper kinda looks like this...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0052.jpg

I knew there was a hint of rust there as with the bumper on it looked like this...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0021.jpg

So I'm glad I've found it, as as it didn't look that bad I was going to leave it a while as there's other things I should be doing  Anyway, the sun went down so I've left Betsy bumperless under the watchful eye of Harriet for the night...

Wow. I've never seen a Monterrey green one, so I'd say its pretty rare. Quite a beauty you have there. Get a new door, fix that minor rust (its really not all that bad, especially for your location) and call it a day. BEAUTIFUL car my friend, and congrats on the baby!

Nafeman

Cheers bud :)

Getting a replacement door is easier said than done  ... The very few I've seen for sale here are all being sold as reliable runners (obviously a good thing), so finding such a spare is going to prove to be difficult. That's why I thought I'd get to know a few of the UK members, for a few direction ;)

I'll have to say, though, the Monterey Green is sex on an Aerodeck.

From the picture it doesn't look bad at all. Body work is so easy on these cars because of the straight panels. The rust on the other had will be annoying to get rid of but looks like its not too rotted away at all. Good find, never knew aerodecks were available in that color.

Yeah the door crease is really shallow. It was difficult to get a decent picture where it'd actually show up. I recon a good buffin' will do wonders for it until I can get it tapped out ;)

The rust on the OS (right hand side ;) ) however, I think looks better in the pics than it actually is. There's a fair bit of rot there. But being none of it's structural and all the rot is completely covered by the bumper i think I'm simply going to have to cut most of it out. At least so as I can get in behind it to remove or treat the rest.

I am waiting for the 25 year rule to kick in for these cars.
25 year rule?... Is that some sort of import regulation or something?... You have to wait until they're at least 25 years old? That sucks :sad2:

 Oooo Oooo Monterey Green on Aerodeck is the best!!! (like my coupe) Really not bad rust for England's countryside...looks so good that auto. 3 things for me to do: drink a pint of Bitters, buy an Aerodeck, and move to English countryside. I really like your front corner lights. They look clear from the sides and JDM on the front 3rd where they meet the "eyelids" I want to match my clears to look like those. I also like the EDM MOT mandated corner markers even though other European Aerodeck owners (Bryan) don't like them. I wonder if I put EDM corner markers in my fenders I'll be street legal here?

Keep up the nice restoration and maintenance. Congrats on the baby!

Cheers  from foggy California.

Cheers on the baby congrats :)

Ask me anything about a 4th gen Prelude and I can tell you, but I'm yet to learn what all the JDM, UKDM, USDM, EUDM touches are regarding lights, gadgets, interior etc, so it's nice for you to point these things out ;) And I'm glad everyone's so "envious(?)" of the colour

I was also going to say you look very much like a young Bruce Springsteen in your sig... But that is him right?

Sorry they're not the best. I'll take some more when it's lighter.

I managed to start with the rust removable last weekend. It was cut short as I had other things to do though. But as it started...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0081.jpg

I picked at it with a thin screwdriver and a wire brush to loosen all the flakey rust. I even found a bit of filler, so I removed that as well...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0083.jpg

And then I proceeded to pull back the layers to get a better handle on the job...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0086.jpg

This was how I left it, as I'll be treating it with this, and it requires I leave it 3 hours between coats and prime the same day...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0079.jpg

So that'll be done this weekend along with the fitting of the towbar ;) ...

That towbar looks very skinny, looks more like a bike rack.
I have a (think original) towbar lying around from my first Aerodeck, and it's 10 times more heavy than yours, probably stronger too.
The interior looks clean, whats does the button below the 'antenna up/down' button do?

Tomisimo

Very nice Aerodeck you have there, its rare to find one in this good nik, but that rust under the fender is typical places they rust on. I say 5sp swap? anytime soon. maybe a B20a as well.

The towbar is VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) & MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) approved. And tested to pull and stop a lot more than the car's legally aloud to pull... And it has a lifetime guarantee ;) And I'm kinda glad it doesn't weigh 10 times what it does

I think the switch off the top of my head is the rear foglights. I'll let you know tomorrow if not :)

Tis indeed... I checked earlier today. No heated seats, but they're snug enough, do they need to be heated? ;)

Finished treating the rust today and applied one coat of primer so far. Towbar's fitted, so not long before I can piece it all back together soon :)

I think it's funny that you guys have to have rear fog lights but not front ones.

Man, I want your climate control buttons - I like the pictures rather than the words we have here in North America.

edit: Does your car have air conditioning?

Nafeman
02-07-2011, 12:34 AM
Does seem daft doesn't it. You'd be amazed just how many drivers that do have front fog lights drive around with them on even when the weather's great in this country though... I'd rather no-one had them

Weird that you have words on your buttons. You'd think you like everybody would just have as the Japanese designed them. Weird :?

And no aircon no. Just the air recirculation system. Still seems hell of a good setup.

Tomisimo
02-07-2011, 12:04 PM
Thats because of all USDM were made in the US, but our EDM were made in Japan and shipped here. Maybe they tried to be a little different. Besides USDM have got cupholders and armrest, no such thing for us. Like we dont drink cafe in the car pssshhh... :D

I had a bit of worry when they arrived at my work and I was told a set of 4 tyres had arrived for me. They were convinced they were only tyres as they'd picked them up and there was no real weight to them. But no, it just turns out that they're just that light! :)

They're RH Classics. 15"x7J ET25. They've been rattle canned silver and it's a bit orange peelly, but they'll definitely do until the tyres need replacing ;-)

I've also treated the rust on the rear arches, popped the bumper back on and fitted a new towbar, but I'll pop up pictures this weekend once I've fitted the wheels :)

They're not a great deal smaller than the standard overall diameter, but being they're 15s now and not 14s, the smaller tyre profile gives an illusion on them being a lot smaller inside the wheel arches. I mean look!...

Well it was the dreaded annual check the week before last and I finally got her back thursday just gone. So as you may have concluded, she didn't pass first time

She had an emissions leak from the down pipe. (Yep the downpipe I'd recently fitted) Turns out the recesses for the crush ring gaskets were machined too deep and therefore had no effect. So a new downpipe was fitted. The backbox was about to break away from the exhaust pipe, so I had a new on of those fitted. The distribution on the rear calipers was uneven, so both calipers were stripped down, cleaned and rebuilt. The NS rear sill has started corroding through where an existing plate had been welded, so this was cut out and replaced. I'd obviously re-fitted the OEM wheels, as my deep dishes protruded too far, but one of the tyres failed on thread... So I robbed one from the donor ;)

And she passed! :D

The ABS light still comes on, but my mechanic was kind enough to drive the car right up to the test centre's ramp and turn the ignition off each time, so as the tester wasn't able to drive it far enough for the light to come on

So she's back in the drive and was able to give her a bit of attention over the last two days, so I'll pop some pics up as soon as I've finished tinkering and given her a wash ;)

Congrats on passing, might have been easier to just remove the bulb from the ALB light for the inspection. That's how I get mine to pass. ;)
Cheers bud :)

You can't get away with that here as the light needs to come on and then go out on start up in order to show the examiner it's working. If it doesn't come on at all on start up then that to is an automatic fail :(

Nafs Asdf
04-26-2011, 04:45 AM
In theory, it needs to do that here too but they don't really check for it. If put the bulb back in on mine, the light is constantly on so it would be pretty noticeable.

Well I managed to allocate myself some time to play with the Aerodeck over the Easter weekend. I started off with "retrofying" the wagon even more ;) ...

I swapped the front and rear bumpers over from the silver DX (It's the completely basic/no frills edition). The rear bumper on my blue EX had had a previous owner drill a hole in the side to fix it up when it had dropped. Where as it would have been a whole lot easier to simply re-fix it using the proper fixing mounts and screws that had just come undone ](*,) Anyway the bumpers from the DX are basic dark grey so in swapping the rear over meant I also had to swap the front to match to ;)

The rear bumper was a simple swap. I actually used one of each cars two mounting brackets as both had one that had been squashed somehow.

The front bumper could have been simpler. Cutting the holes in the much better conditioned new one for the headlight washer jets was fairly straight forward, but removing the lip from the blue bumper was a complete pain in the ass!

Then after the bumpers I decided to swap the electric aerials over. My current one was bent and thus would retract or extend. The grey one struggles a little on the last 6cm but is fine otherwise. Anyway, it fits down into the A pillar and comes out and connects into a unit in the driver's foot well, behind the fusebox... behind the relays and all the cables... behind the foot pedals, in an area you can't even really focus a light on where you have to invert yourself upside down on the driver's seat laid flat just to give yourself a polio handed grasp on being able to thread the "always wanting to coil up" cable into the mechanism. Honestly it took a good 2 or so hours just to keep trying different methods. This was all not even knowing that it was going to even work! ... But it did :D

Then I swapped over the boot carpets as the original one was quite tatty. Which also then led me to swap over the hardboard spare wheel cover as the DX's was in perfect condition and the EX's was battered, had corners missing, was stained and everything. I also swapped over the OEM tool kits as the DX's was complete and the spare wheel clamping bolt as the EX's was seizing.

The parcel shelf had had a pivot point snapped off, so I swapped the pivots over from the DX's, and also one of the pivot retaining clips had snapped, so I swapped those over to.

I was missing the NS rear speaker mounting frame as well, so I had that away from the DX to.

Whilst I was in the boot and obviously cleaning away I swapped the boot lights over. It looked light someone had poured coke in the EX's and then thrown fluff at it!

Then a simple removal of the rear wiper pivot bolt cap and placement on the EX finished off the back end.

I'd also swapped one of the rear mud guards over when fitting the rear bumper, as the previous one was a little scuffed.

Now being this had been the first time I'd cleaned the interior I thought I best check down the backseat. I knew the previous owner to me had had kids. I'd already found umpteen of their McDonalds toys in the back side pockets  And one quick look decided it for me... The back seat was coming out!

Look what I found!...

This picture really doesn't do it justice, but it was a good 6cm high

It was made worth my while though ;) ...

Now as the rear bench was out I thought I may as well take this opportunity to swap the seats over as well. The interior of the blue EX is Grey and the interior of the grey DX is blue! They both work well together, but I thought it would be nice to introduce a bit of colur into the inside of the EX. The new boot carpet was now blue afterall ;) I knew the balsters on the front seats were in much better condtion in the lesser mileage DX as well.

So I swapped in the blue bench. Oh and as simple as they are to remove and replace, not know the method does add a considerable amount of time to the process

Rear bench in and I move to the driver's seat. Unbolting and removing from both cars is pretty straight forward, but making a DX's driver's seat fit in an EX?... Ain't gonna happen :? I didn't even check to see if the mounting point were the same... As I'd already noticed that where as the seatbelt in the DX anchors to the chassis, in the EX it mounts to the seat! That's ok, the cushions look pretty much the same, so I proceeded to remove them. Again, easier said and done. I actually had to remove the "stitching rings" in order to lift the cover high enough on the back of the seat to get to the fixing bolts. The seat base came off a lot easier. Then I was left with this from the EX's seat...

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h85/nafeman1/Aerodeck/SANY0289.jpg

I did the same to the DX's and then went to reverse the proceedure. Again the back was no problem (just as fiddly as removal) but then it was the turn of seat base to stick a finger in my eye! The difference between the EX and DX seat are in the mechanisms. Obviously there's more mechanisms in the EX, and this results in... Not the seat rails being wider, but the seat base being narrower #-o

So, the wider blue DX seat base wouldn't fit in the narrower EX's rail. So...

Off come the covers and pads and swap them over I do.

You can see here how both the seats differ...

I wasn't looking forward to doing all the same again to the passenger seat, but at least this time I knew exactly what to do. But as it turns out, the passenger seat was the same basic seat in both. Phew! :D

And pictures! After a good hover and clean ;) (Although the pictures don't seem to have come out as blue as the blue is :?) ...

And pictures of the outside...

You can see where I swapped over the blue fog light surrounds, so they need a lick of dark grey, along with the number plate board...

And I also trimmed down the offset-lettered, wonky-holed number plate, which then allowed me to drill new holes and pick up on the OEM fixing points and leave the bumper completely unmolested :) ...

I actually prefer the grey bumpers quite a bit. May even continue the grey line below the side trim eventually.

Cheers bud :)

You can't get away with that here as the light needs to come on and then go out on start up in order to show the examiner it's working. If it doesn't come on at all on start up then that to is an automatic fail :(

i ran a wire from the bulb straight to the check engine light lol so it will come on for about 2 seconds when you turn the key, then off again

Genius! And so simple! May look that way come 11 months time ;) ... Unless I have a spare £150 at the time, in which case I may actually fix the problem properly

Nor here. The only two I've ever seen are the two I have  And I had to travel 2 - 2.5 hours north for both of those!

Lovely car! some good work you are putting into the car. Its good to see a few of these 3geez a bit closer to home than the states!

I actually had to get my Accord in London and take it back to Ireland over 5 years ago as there is none left here.
