well now that i have the accord running and ready to go theres a leak bellow where the intake is and im trying to figure it out. this is the first 3gee i have owned but it is also my first car i have been working on cars for a while but very little honda experience. any hep would be great, it starts to leak when warmed up but it might be leaking when its sitting there idk yet.

under the manifold you have several hoses that go to the and from the back water pipe. might be a hose that needs replacement.

How many hoses are under the manifold and does the manifold need to come off to replace the hoses?

Red circles are whereabouts the water tubing should run/connect.
It's a mess under the intake. Remove your air box and intake tubing and getting to these hoses will be 3x easier.
It's like $.40/ft. of 1/4" THICK rubber hose and $.20/ft. of 1/8" Vacuum tubing. I keep at least 5 feet of every sized hose/tubing on our cars handy, in the trunk. Never know when you'll need them, but you got them if you do. I like to just cut, clamp and go.
The antifreeze is leaking more when it's cranked because the cooling system pressurizes to 14-16psi from heat expansion. This is why it leaks more when running. Crank it and wait 2-3 minutes and follow the hiss/droplets/mist/steam etc. Use a flashlight to find it. Take caution. Antifreeze is FKN HOT! I learned my lesson a month or so ago w/2nd degree burns. TAKE CAUTION!

i dont know if your A20 motors come with the factory oil cooler before the oil filter but thats a common place for water pipes to fail also

As far as i know, we don't have factory oil coolers. I do have an extra cooler though built into my radiator, the new one. It's like 2 radiators in one. one for antifreeze, and the other 2 fittings they clain are for auto trans cooling. I didn't know the auto trans came with a cooler. hmmm...i don't really think using it for a manual would benefit much...do you?:flash:

theres a really random tank on the back of the engine.. what is it? i think thats where its coming from.. its right by where the coolant lines go into the intake manifold, by a larger hose (not the main coolant hose) under the manifold going to a secondary tank it looks like.

wow, i have no idea what you are taslking about. there shouldn't be a secondary tank, that i know of, period. Near the bottom of the engine/oil pan under the intake is where your PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventalation) Is. Could that be what you're looking at? it should have like 1/2"inch hose coming out, but it doesn't contain any water. Just blowby gases etc. There's also another tank looking thing, but that's the Fuel filter, located on your firewall, just to the left of the intake.
Can you take a pic of said tank?:dunno:

I don't know if the '86 is the same as my '89, but I'd take a shot that the leak is coming from one of the little hoses around the intake plumbing, specifically the hose that comes out of the IACV (idle air control valve) and disappears under the intake manifold. All of the other little hoses are relatively easy to reach and replace, but this one is a knuckle-busting cusser. It's also kind of obscure, so much so that I missed it when replacing all the others, and then one day I had a little stream when it finally gave out. If you look at the IACV standing in front of the car, it comes out on the right, makes a right turn, and is lost from view.

I recommend replacing all the little bypass hoses at the same time. It's a pain, but a lot less pain than having the one you didn't change give up on the freeway during rush hour.

I should add that those little hoses are different diameters, so don't think you can go down to the auto store and get a length of tubing and rock on. Some of them have pre-formed curves, which you'll need to use, because regular tubing will kink. I went to the Honda dealer and bought a set.

Right. The little hoses are all formed rubber and run from $9-$15 each. You can't buy them as a kit, unfortunately, so you have to make sure you got them all before you leave the store. By the time you leave, you'll have spent ~$150. That seems like a lot, but not when compared to tow bills. Like W261 said, regular heater hose is probably not going to work.

quick question cant i bypass that hole thing? the t-splitter on the end of the hose coming off the thermostat has two ends couldnt i just plug both into the iacv? i know it most likly wont work because it needs an in and an out right?

Shit. I have used Clear Fiber Wound PVC Tubing for A TON of my coolant hoses. The fiber reinforment makes the hose harder to kink. AND is rated at 150PSI/290*F+. Never had an issue. Take pieces of hose up to O'Reillys. And the hard bent pieces, you'll have to order. O'reillys probably can get them too, cheaper than Honda.
Half my coolant lines have been replaced, and ZERO so far have came from Honda.

I don't remember them as being that expensive, but it's been a few years now. The straight hoses just need to be the right diameter, as I remember I was able to get some from an auto store, but others they didn't have. It was at that point that I just went to Honda.

Guess #1: upper control arm bushing. Jack up the car, take off the wheel, and spray the uca mount with wd-40. If the squeak stops there you are. Don't spray the brakes. Even if it does stop it's only a temp fix. you'll need to replace the bushing. use plenty of silicone grease.
Guess #2: ball joints

the sqeaking is coming from the alternator belt...:uh: thats going to be a fun one to replace.. anyone know what tools im going to need? (like wrench sizes)

I also need a new tranny i think i dont know tho the only problem is it wont go into 5th, it will sit in fifth and then rev up like the cloucth is in but i have diengaged the clutch already.

I also have that same issue of no 5th gear. One day, coming back from an army base in SC, coming through Atlanta rush hour traffic, and my damn 5th which i was in driving, just died. Just like revving it in neutral :/ It'll still run 70 easy. Just at about 4000rpms or so in 4th which gives pathetic gas mileage.
I think all you need is a 12mm wrench and a 10mm socket for the alternator. It's one of the easier repairs. I may have it backwards. All you'll need for this car pretty much is either a 10mm,12mm, 14mm, 17mm or 19mm along with a small and large + and - screwdriver. 19mm's fit your 3/4" lugs too. :werd:

hmm well it would be nice to know how to fix 5th gear i like to have good gas mileage its not to bad right now, i just hit 102 at about 5400rpm a couple days ago just to show my friend that i could hit one hundred.
I was thinking maybe a syncro or one of the shift forks is loose but anyones guess would help.
thanks for the sizes on the wrench's firefighter im going to look more into the fifth gear issue.

you would need to buy a new 5th gear...the accord 5th gear dies of heat...the oil passage is too small to keep it cool. its a easy fix and you really dont need to drop down the trans
Dr_Snooz

You'll need a 32mm socket IIRC to get the locknut off though.

Anyone know how much a 5th gear from Honda would cost? i'm sure someone here has had to get one and I'm almost positive O'reilly's won't have it, that it'll be a dealer part.
Or would integra gears work better or at least cheaper?

^^^ what he said. Sorry. It's either a 32 or 30. I'm pretty sure it's 32 though. I bought a great kit recently from Harbor Freight with lots of very big sockets in it. I don't have to remember sizes anymore, I just grab whatever fits. Consequently, I've forgotten all big socket sizes on the car.
I'd be surprised if the dealer has the parts you need. You're going to have to harvest it from a junkyard.
slowA20tog22

how would you test the gear from the junk yard to make sure it works?
out the car on stands and spin the tires and the let the clutch go and see if the tires stop spinning?

Yes. Is there a 'How-To' thread on boring out 5th's oil passage? I'd like to solve this oil starvation issue.

as would I, this would save a lot of money and other peoples money and time. can anyone show me where this oil passage is if you happen to have a spare tranny laying around. I will try to fix this issue when i have the money to buy the part.

My tranny has 235k on it and has no problems. Let the fluid get low, however, and well yes, 5th will die of heat.

Like W261 said, the fix for 5th gear is to keep the transmission oil full and clean and to fix every leak promptly. The fifth gear oil passage is at the far end of a long, hardened steel shaft. You probably aren't going to be able to drill it out with anything currently in your shed. More importantly, there is no real pump in the transmission. Oil gets flung off the diff and into the shaft. Consequently, there isn't a lot that makes it all the way down that shaft to fifth gear. If you double the size of the hole, it's not going to make any real difference. The transmission was designed to have a certain amount of oil in it and offers trouble-free performance for many hundreds of thousands of miles the way it is. You just have to keep proper care of it.
To find a good gear at the junkyard, do a visual inspection. You don't want a lot of scoring or tooth wear or busted splines or worn syncros.

Don't worry, once Lost gets his his engine oil cooler fabbed out, it'll be time for a transmission recirculating cooling system! And after that, my own personal wish list, seat cushion forced a/c.
