Starting today I'll be on vacation from work, so I have some plans to acomplish in my car.

1) Put the fuel tank down. There is still strong fuel odor inside the car and nearby the filler neck of the tank. Only in the evenings -I don't know why.

2) Put back all the emissions stuff. I want my car to be 100% stock again. I plan to do it one system at the time so I don't end up with a failure "hard to find".

3) I think I am going to leave it in the shop to be re-painted while I am out of town for some days. I was waiting to get the Mexican license plates first, but I can't wait any longer. (A new law is about to be published by the government that allows us living in the border to import cars), If I do this I will take pictures before to start my official build thread.

enjoy that vacation Buzo, you have earned it I am certain!

I have that same random gas smell on the lxi, only in the afternoons not in the morning. I think the temp of the fuel or something? no leaks under the hood, all new injector seals, dry around the rail and reg, smell has to be coming from tank.
I thought the top of the tank was accessed from the inside of the car? A plate under the back seat or something...

Isn't a gas smell usually from a bad charcoal canister?

Fuel odor fixed.

After loosing the tank I looked and found two hoses in really bad shape, all the rubber is gone in some parts of them. I had to disconnect all the hoses to let the tank sit in the floor, after that, changing the rubber hoses was easy.

And the reason I had fuel odor in the cabin was because the two covers that give you access to the fuel tank in the trunk were not correctly installed so the air mixed with the fuel vapor was being pulled inside.

This is how they looked.

Thanks Rodo, certainly I am enjoying working at home.

I think the reason why the fuel odor is only in the evenings is because the fuel has a boiling point of about 30 C, so the heat of the sun makes the gas to boil and release vapors.

You can check the integrity of the hoses by unscrewing the two nuts that holds the tank underneath the car. Then look through the driver's side cover in the trunk and if you can see any crack in any hose, just finish releasing the tank and change them all. The replacement hoses cost was $1 USD by the way and took me a couple of hours.

The clue I had to suspect of the tank was the fuel odor I got just by standing by the left rear door area. I mean, it sounds logic now, but there was nothing wet around that area, so messing with the tank just to check wasn't going to be funny.

Anyway, by solving this problem my car feels now, lets say, less old.

Emissions stuff back in the car. It works better than before because I removed the air jet controller which was the only one cause of my Idle problems.
So the next step is to get it painted. I will start my build thread for that.

It's amazing how fixing the little, irritating things make the vehicle seem so much better.

Could you describe the idle problem caused by the air jet controller? Did you just plug the lines, or ?

The car could not be adjusted below 1000 rpms without the engine wanting to die. It also knocked during acceleration.

Plug all three hoses coming out of the air jet controller and test. If you see any good difference it means the controller is leaning the air/fuel mix.

The air jet controller compensates for changes in altitude, my city is pretty much flat so i don't know yet the effect of plugging these hoses in mountain roads or the sea level.
