Let me apologize in advance for not wading through prob 500 posts having to do with oil, filters, etc.....but as I washed off my arm after I managed to run warm oil down it, it occurred to me that I could probably change the filter every other time. I'm pretty religious about doing the oil at 3-4k, which I'm thinking is not really needed, but which makes me feel better. I wouldn't call my service "severe," meaning every time I drive the car it's for at least 20 miles and usually more. I use a premium filter (NAPA gold or equivalent).

I know this is very subjective, but what do you guys think?

try it once and see how dirty your oil is afterwards. if using a good synthetic w/ lots of detergents i don't really see this being a prob. you might also want to buy a magnetic drain plug to compare the amount of shavings between different filter change intervals. the filter will allow flow if it gets "clogged" but will no longer filter you're oil. when using synthetics most people go about 7000-7500 miles on the same oil and filter, so 6000-8000 is pretty much in that window. if still using dino oil i would def change the filter every time just because of the sludge that accumulates.

why wouldn't you want to spend the few extra bucks and change the filter? the filters are designed to last an average oil change interval, plus all that dirty oil still in there added to your clean oil.

It's really your call. Oil changes every 3k have always seemed excessive to me. Depends on the oil you use though. Seriously though, it's your car. You've had it long enough that you know it very well. Whatever you choose to do is probably going to be fine.

Money is not the object. It's the oil running down my arm part. I'm thinking that with my interval, the filter should be np at 6k. Maybe I'll go to the oil site. Thx

Put on a remote filter kit to get it out from under the intake to somewhere easily accesable and non spill?

Tip of the day- Break the seal on the filter, take a bread bag, medium ziplock, etc. put it around the filter (as in filter in the bag) and then unscrew it. If you do it right the oil ends up in the bag and not in your armpit.

The one thing I really do miss from the VW TDI motors is the cartridge style drop in oil filter that is right on the front of the motor. Unscrew the cap, pull old filter straight up and out, drop in new, screw cap back on. Super simple and easy.

I have my '89 since August 1989 . . . bought it new. I have changed the oil and filter every 3000 since then (now it's almost 525,000 miles) and never had this problem. I reach back behind the engine (between the firewall and engine), break the filter loose with a filter wrench, spin it off a little bit, let it drain a little . . . as long as it takes for me to get the oil pan plug off and open the filler hole, and let it drain . . . maybe 10 minutes. By that time there is very little oil running out of the filter, never enough for me to notice it. In fact . . . I barely have enough to lube the gasket on the new filter. Don't skip the oil filter, just do it another (my) way. My whole oil change might take me 1/2 hour, cost me under $15, filter included. Seems to work too . . . lots of miles on my Accord, still runs GREAT! Rocketman

It just occurred to me that you probably mean that you change your filter from the bottom . You can reach it from the top . . . passenger side, just reach behind the engine. Rocketman

Some people think if you do not change the filter every time----the filter holes get smaller after the first change (and it is able to filter smaller particles). I dunno.

Does that makes sense to anyone?

This reminds me of a friend of mine in college . . . he had a VW Rabbit . . . used synthetic oil and a premium filter . . . changed the filter every 2500 miles, changed the oil and filter every 10,000 miles. He had to top off the oil whenever he changed the filter. His reasoning was that the synthetic lasted longer (and was more expensive) and that filtration was the key. He drove that VW forever, never had a oil related breakdown. Rocketman

Kinda sounds like what K&N says about their filter (the trapped particles help to filter even more particles). I don't know if this applies to oil filters. At what point does it go from "helping to filter particles" to "too clogged to prevent proper oil flow"?

This kind of makes sense. There are people that run 10-15K between between oil and filter changes using premium synthetic oil. Unheard of for someone like me that does 3K oil changes using dino oil but their used oil analysis comes back with great results so it works for them.


And to the OP, if oil running down your arm is the only reason you don't want to change the filter every time, I think you just need to change the way you do it. I usually spin it til oil starts pouring out and just let it all drain before removing it completely. The only time I had a problem was when I was doing an oil change outside since my garage was full and it was a windy day. Did the usual crack open the filter and let it pour down the block BUT a nice sudden gust of wind sprayed it all over my hair and face while some of it also go into my eye :lol: I would rather take oil down the arm than have that happen again.

i've never done my filters every oil change. it just seems excessive to me.

i change my oil every 4.5k or so, and do my filter every other change.

never had any problems with any of my vehicles related to oil

I change it every time, but then I use synthetic oil and only change every 10,000 miles. Much earlier in the car's life I was still stuck in that 3,000 mile OCI mindset so I used to change the filer in the middle (at 5K) and add a pint of new oil. Now, I just buy a decent filter and run the whole mess 10K. Almost everything you read on forums related to oil and filters seems sort of fanatical to me.

pretty sure the car's manual says to change the oil every 6000 miles or so.. but as lost says the filter itself holds oil so i would change it when changing the oil

unless you are in rough conditions or have some other reason to change the oil often i think 3000 miles is overkill.. it's just marketing from jiffylube and the like

there are way too many high mileage 3geez on the road for it to make a big difference is probably the bottom line.. so do whatever makes you happy lol

When I had my 3G I'd run 10W30 Castrol GTX High Mileage and a K&N Filter, Depending on if I was doing alot of Stop and Go or Highway Miles I'd change my oil every 5K-7.5K As the owners manual States.

With my 2006 CR-V The Severe Service is 5K on the oil and filter and The Normal is 10K on the oil and filter, I have been running Synthetic since about 15K on the car, I figure I'd rather pay a little extra for Full synthetic and a quality oil filter, then have issues down the road... Also going to Synthetic I gained about 2 MPG, Tomorrow it's getting changed with Mobil 1 0W20 and a Mobil 1 Filter :cool:

you have to watch those K&N filters, they let more dirt through by design, they are designed for race applications, so the extra dirt isn't going to hurt an engine torn down all the time, a lot of people don't know that, same with the air filters, nothing wrong with them in the proper application, but they are not designed with engine longevity in mind

Well Now I Run the Mobil 1 Extended Filters, there EXACTLY the same filter as the K&N except it doesn't have the nut on the end of the filter, Bobtheoilguy shows proof if it.

After seeing the reports of 2002-2004 CRV's catching fire with the OEM Honda filters I'll spend the $11.99 for a better quality filter :D

why spend all that extra money, just get the wix? they've been shown to be one of the best filters over and over, Wix and nappa gold are the same thing, it will save you a few dollars, and you'll get a really good filter, I won't run anything else, I need to get a fram and cut it open,I have a wix for the civic I won't ever use, so I'll cut it open

I kind of thought so. I do oil changes on so many different Honda/Acuras and as far as I knew, there were only 2 main kinds that I kept on the shelf plus 1 less used one that I don't think I've ever had to buy. One standard size (PH3593A) and the smaller diameter but slightly taller one (PH7313). NSX, some Legends and TL's used a PH8212.

While we're on this topic, I heard the 7313 is used on most of the newer Hondas and by design, raises the oil pressure a bit (or allows for a high oil pressure) and can be used on the cars using the 3593 but not the other way around. Anyone know if this is true?
