Soo last sunday I decided to take the lude out to the local car meet. After cruising for about 30 mins, I was running on 3 cylinders. Didn't know what happened. I towed the car back home. Tuesday, I started her up, and was running just fine... Weird. The basemap I was running was stupid rich. My UEGO was not reading above 10.0 :slap:

Well now it's running ok again. I'm running around 12.0-12.3.. Need to lean her out a bit... Hopefully I can go out for nice cruise tonight again :D

Seems like your washing your rings thus loosing compression. If I were you gio I would drop that oil now an run a different base man lower your a/r ratio an try to get it sotch . 10.0 is whoa man lol

I know!!! That was the first night I took the car out.. I can't find my damn ostrich and damn data logging cable shit.. I'm gonna order all of it real soon again.

Right now I am running between 12.8-13.5 at wot which is a lot better...

I
Went to the track.. ran shitty as hell. Broke front mount.

Finally got my ostrich hooked up, so now I've done a little more street tuning. Def get's up and goes a ton better than before. Can't wait to go back out this week again to see what the car does at the track.

I'm also ordering my air to water intercooler this week. Boost coming real soon :D

Broke front mount? As in motor mount? Hopefully not one of the brackets I made?

No!!! Still stock mounts!! Didn't have my wishbone mount on, and that tore the front mount.

Thanks, man! I just did some more street tuning last night. Leaned it out some more. It's running sooo much better!! Top end still sucks, though!!

Tuning is an adventure for sure. You will become very familiar with the WBO2 and datalogging. And no matter how good it is there will always be something else to tweak.

Yeah. I had not tuned a car in about two years!!! And I feel like on this car, I'm starting from scratch.. Most other cars can get a stock basemap and run good off that. apparently my car doesn't like any stock maps I've found..

Btw, anyone have some timing maps I can compare mine to???

Bah... Base maps are for the weak.

Here's what I was running awhile back when I still had a regular manifold. Obviously it doesn't go into boost but it ran pretty well for NA.

Yupp. 2.5 in/out, and 2.5 piping...

Soooo some more bad news, again... When I got my head rebuilt, two of the spark plug holes weren't in great shape they said; so they repaired them using time-serts... Well last night, I went to start working on car, and decided to start by throwing on my colder plugs in, and well fuck me, the entire plug and time-serts both came out!!!! :(

SOO, no, I have to buy a repair kit and fix this shit. I'm using JB weld this time since apparently Fords use it often since the like to pop plugs out of the heads... So, I'm set yet one more time.. fucking stupid car!!!

Shit sucks.

Hash_man_Se_i
09-04-2011, 12:43 PM
That sucks to hear... you should try a Helicoil kit. We use them at work and they seem to work quite well for things of that nature.

rjudgey
09-04-2011, 01:23 PM
Don't use JB weld if you can incase it gets stuck to the plug unless you going to fill it up with that and then re tap the thread again? Helicoil allways seem to work and not fail after so not sure whats up with what ever the head shop used obviously sub standard or they're work is! lol!

Can allways take it off again and throw it back at em! Might be worth sniffing around for a spare head just in case or if you have a spare then getting prepped and ready so you can do a straight swap! (That's what I do anyway allways have a spare of something ready to direct swap over!)

hondalude86
09-04-2011, 04:11 PM
Yeah, these heads seem to be quiet soft for sure. My head on my read car had two buggered spark plug holes, but I got lucky and just ran a thread chaser through it and it works fine. I've learned from my previous preludes/accords to ALWAYS use anti-seeze on spark plugs and to only remove my plugs on a cold motor

gfrg88
09-04-2011, 05:56 PM
Yeah, I didn't use anti seize, and pulled them after driving home from work.. :slap:

So you guys recommend Helicoil over Time-Sert??? And no JB weld??? I'll post up a link of what I meant...

obdriver6
09-04-2011, 09:04 PM
I've never used time serts so I can't say anything bad about them but I would recommend helicoil since I've never had a problem with them.

hondalude86
09-04-2011, 09:19 PM
i've never really used either, but i've never heard or "time-serts" see next time you'll use some Anti-Seeze on those little diddies

rjudgey
09-05-2011, 01:32 AM
Highly recommend copper grease on plugs mines been in and out hundreds of times and I've never had an issue with stripped plugs or plugs stuck. Think this is pretty common procedure on any petrol car is it not?

gfrg88
09-05-2011, 09:03 AM
Yeah, my buddy and a lot of shops around here recommend time-serts.. They're not as known like helicoil is, but they're supposed to be a bit better.. I'll def use more anti seize on everything now!!!

cygnus x-1
09-06-2011, 10:42 AM
If the threads on the insert and head are still ok, and the insert will thread back in all the way, try this. Pit a little red loctite around the upper part of the insert and thread it back into the hole all the way. Let it sit overnight and then try removing the plug again. The loctite should hold the insert in and let the plug come out.

Hmm looks well dodgy! how hot is the engine running try running it cooler if you can? Or maybe you need colder plugs especially with the turbo etc. what ones are you using?

hondalude86
09-14-2011, 06:54 PM
Looks like a hot plug that was in a hot motor and got stripped out...

gfrg88
09-15-2011, 04:48 PM
I'm not quite sure why it did that. But my buddy told me he's seen this happen when the serts aren't installed right (loose) they burn up.. The plug was fine. It was the sert that got fucked up. I got the head back Monday night. I just have been really busy, so haven't installed it yet...

Rich, the turbo hasn't gone on yet.. As soon as the head goes on, the install will begin :D

To me, It looks like a cylinder temp issue. Possibly not enough timing causing detonation. What was the afr as the problem came about?

gfrg88
09-15-2011, 08:03 PM
Car always ran right..ish... a/f was 12s when first started tuning it.. then tuned it to 13-13.3.. Never had a problem. Only way I found this out, was when I was getting ready to start slapping everything together and pulled plugs for colder ones, the whole sert came out...

gfrg88

I need to also get egt gauge hooked up to keep an eye out in case it is running too hot..

I'm going to do some testing this weekend to see if the coil is bad on my red prelude this weekend, I'm pretty stoked to see what happens with it! Wouldn't it be great to have an even faster car all because of one silly little part?

What have you managed to get your AFR down to now? should try for around 13-13.5:1 I normally run 12.5:1 but that's cause I'm not too fussed about fuel economy and the engine likes it that rich any less than that miss fires at the top end between 7-8krpm

Guess I'll just have to try 1 degree at a time, right

rjudgey
10-20-2011, 04:08 AM
It will be retarded already if you have shaved the head, so you want to try advance from where you are, but it maybe worth trying a degree or two retarded sometimes engines like it gives more top end power, but try one at a time untill you find the sweet spot, helps having rolling road time for this really could make 10bhp or more on a turbo setup if dialed in correctly.

Can't even remember what mine is set to at the moment think it's 0 or -1 degree, but I think I've found out whats causing my high end miss fire possibly dodgy volatge regulator, it's been fluctuating up and down like a yoyo lately.

I'm hoping so, Kinda hard to get anything done when its 20 degrees outside and my cars are about 8+ inches under snow!

89T
12-03-2011, 11:32 PM
so lets do math.... 8% gain per pound of boost.
94.45 *8% = 7.556hp per psi. x 14psi = 105.784 + 94.45(at its presant state)= 200.234hp. :) not bad.
151.12 + 94.45 = 245.57hp @20 psi

gfrg88

Dude, status update!!!

gfrg88
12-11-2011, 10:09 AM
Update. Picked up my exhaust e-cutoff. picked up the T fitting to supply the fuel to make nitrous kit wet. Ordered new emulator cable so I can tune (my other is fucked up), and hulog so I can do highway pulls and log everything. I'm still waiting on my apartment complex to let me know if there is a garage open so I can work on my car.. worst case scenario is I'll have to get some buddies to help me out in their garage. hope not..

My goal is to have the car running on 10-12 with 35hp wet shot to help spool turbo, on E85 by Feb.

Decided to tear into harness again and redo it better. Just going to touch the half ass parts(no shrink tubing). Also get rid of all extra wiring not needed.

Got Turbo Mani and Turbo on. Fits pretty decent. Hits dipstick, but dont think it'll be a huge issue.downpipe will be a bitch. Routing oil feed line tonight and removing pan to tap return

Got oil line hooked up last night. feed line didn't work with the damn turbo kit. Had to go out and look for an 3/8" to 1/8" reducer. got that hooked up. BPST T fitting didn't work, was hitting that coolent tube right next to it. I ended up using an NPT 90, and am praying it doesn't leak.

Spend the rest of the night going through boxed trying to get all my tools out of my storage and into garage. Was hoping to get to grinder, to hack some more of the bumper away, but didn't find it. More updates tomorrow hopefully. that's if not I'm not too hung over

Also did you ever run a compression test after you put the new head on to make sure the rings are good?

gfrg88
12-31-2011, 09:18 AM
No, and no. lol.. That's actually the next thing to do. I wanted to get everything mocked up to see where the best placement for WG would be. It's pretty big, so I'm a little worried about fitment. I'm thinking about just welding 90 up top towards pass side and call it good. I'll have to take the mani off tomorrow along with turbine and go to my brothers house to weld it all up.

01-14-2012, 09:43 PM
I feel this car when sorted out will make over 215-230whp on 10-12psi boost. If it doesnt, somthing is wrong with it. What injectors/fuel pump/spark plugs are you gonna run? Also, when you mount that wastegate, try to keep it as close to the turbo flange on the log mani as possible (such as on top of the mani near the turbo), because cheating to one end or the other on the log mani (near cyls 1 or 4) would hurt flow. Also I would keep the nitrous fogger as close to the throttle body as possible, but in any case, def put the bov on the intercooler side of the nitrous jet, not the throttle body side, so if you slam the throttle body shut when boosting/spraying, the flammable fuel/nitrous stays in the pipe instead of being immediatly vented to the engine compt.

but nice progress and I def love the build. Another up and coming car!

gfrg88
01-15-2012, 08:19 AM
Thanks, man!! Still haven't managed to get into the garage last couple of days, so no real updates. I'm putting wastegate right between runners 2-3, above flange. I need to buy injectors, planning on getting some precision 1000cc. Already have 255lph walbro pump. Nitrous is about 6" from tb. I've only got 1 step colder NGKs right now. Still sticking with trying to having it running by end of this month :D

Not Alumiweld specifically but I have tried aluminum brazing (essentially soldering). It's a pain because the melting point of the filler rod is not much lower than the aluminum, so it's very easy to turn your part into a puddle. Aluminum conducts heat very quickly too so you need a huge ass torch for all but the smallest parts. Next time I need some aluminum work done I'll take it to a weldor.

That being said, it can work if you can get the technique down.

what are you talking about??? all I did was set it there.. tree hugers should not pay any attention to this...

Been there, done that. Made a mess in the dishwasher. It will probably take a few cycles to get all the grease out.

Yeah, it's a mess lol.. I'll have to run it a few times now lol.. take some kind of a good degreaser to it haha :ugh2:

wooot!!!! I got to somewhat work on the car!!!! BUT it wasn't any good progress :hs:

I uninstalled the nitrous, and sold it to a buddy of mine that wanted it. Needed the cash. AND I ended up making money of it. Installed it for him last night, and had a blast with it. literally. Intake backfire, and bent throttle plate BAD. was pretty scary, yet awesome!!! :rice:

On a side note. I'll be moving, again. Place I'm currently at is waaaay too expensive for me. I'll be getting a house in a couple of months hopefully. So I have no choice but to get car running asap. After I'm done moving, I should be paying probably half of what my rent is now; which means more goodies for car!!! :D

Welds look rough lol
Make sure to clean up the inside

Fluxcored ftw!! Inside is nice and smooth. Function over form. Strong welds :)

Looks like maybe you need a little more heat. Maybe try turning up the voltage or wire speed next time, and then weld in short bursts (more like "tacks") instead of longer beads to keep from getting too much heat in one spot. Flux core makes it harder to not punch through thin material though. Just means more grinding to clean it up.

After about literally two hours of grinding, it looks a lot better! I'm tapping oil pan for return line tonight, and hopefully fire up to check for any oil leaks!! :D

Next is get wastegate flange welded up, throw on BOV, and injectors. then tune! :) Still not sure if my injectors are gonna be too small :hs:

You need to turn up you'r wire speed, clean it better, before you weld. If you burn through it on 2 high, back it off to 2 low and slow the wire speed down a bit.

The key is to have the piece and your sheild clean.

Yea wirespeed! It deff makes a difference, also if u don't have one GET an auto darkening. Makes everything 300x easier(I tried my hand at tig welding without an auto darkening mask. Lol it was terrible).

But 880s should be good right to 500 as long as the rest of ur fuel system is good.

Went to throw on wastegate and the fucking huge thing hits the rad!!! fml
