I found a pile of shift linkages, and I was bored so i made a short shifter. here's what my old one looked like

it was a good one lol. but since i has a welder atm i decided to make a new one. i cut a little section out of the top bit (hopefully not too much) and welded it back together, then cut the bottom pivot bit off another linkage and welded it right under the stock one. here it is:

I don't have a car to put it in, but I'm guessing the gears are gonna be very close together haha :D

Come and do mine?

Didn't someone do this with a Civic short shifter?

He just grinded the ball down to fit. :D

But I still wouldn't mind having one.

lol yeah that was rendon. i don't believe in paying for stuff if i can make it myself for free though :) especially when it takes less than 15 minutes lol

89t made one for me just like that

whatever you do, don't lose the metal plate that goes over that rear shifter bushing, also don't lose the inserts in the bushings, both are discontinued.
before you put that in, grab an energy suspension civic kit number 16.1101R
this replaces that rear bushing and the shift torque rod bushing with poly bushings, make a big difference

yeah justin86 made one for me so did 89t justin made mine really short and 89t was a improvement from the stock shifter

yeah it sucks when you lose that metal plate. i've spent hours searching for them before and just ended up using washers. i have one of those things now though so i'm good there :) I was gonna make make/recycle some stiffer bushes out of something, cause like I said before, i don't believe in paying for stuff if i can make it myself for free, Either that or just make completely solid ones, i hate having slack or play in anything on my cars.

I was gonna use a steering columns U-joint for the shifter part for a play-free shifter. but realized that I would have to cut the selector off the gearbox if I wanted to do it properly which is more effort than I feel like putting into it lol. solid bushings there will do the trick good enough

you can often find those kits pretty cheap on egay, I paid five bucks for my kit, for 5-10 dollars it's much eaisier and cheaper to get the bushings, they will outlast the car

it's all good, I have nothing better to do with my time so making stuff myself is fun. that $5-10 saved could feed me for a couple days :)

back on (or off) topic, I also put a bolt through the clutch pedal switch hole so i can have the clutch pedal closer to the floor and keep my minimal play comfort with it

here's a couple pics of that

I want to do something with the brakes next. i want it to have a bit less travel & be more firm

be careful doing that to the brake, if there is any pressure on the master cyl piston, the compensating ports in it get blocked off, and this causes issues, the piston HAs to fully return to the release position

i don't plan on modifying the brakes pedal. probably use a bigger master cylinder with a smaller booster, or whatever combination of master cylinder/booster that lets me have what I like. I think the biggest one I have is a 15/16" (which is probably only a stock one lol) I need to educate myself a bit more for choosing the combination I want

i have a civic brake booster here (the smaller one) next to an accord one
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/9565/img1903medium.jpg
as you can see the arm thingy is also shorter than the accord one.

here is the pedals sitting on the accord booster
http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/3356/img1907medium.jpg
and here they are sitting on the civic one
http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/2808/img1909medium.jpg
that switch bracket can be easily bent down to the pedal
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/5013/img1910medium.jpg

win. it's almost at the same height as the clutch pedal :) and being a smaller booster, I'm guessing it will make the pedal more firm. double win. all 3 pedals are almost at the same height now. tripple win. can't wait to see how this feels in a car

What did that Civic booster come out of. I might switch to that because the difference in height between the brake and the throttle is killing me for racing.

a EF civic. not sure if it's from a Si or a LX, but it was one of them

He's right. After i did my booster i didn't have it adjusted correctly, it took around 5-10 minutes for me to get the brakes red hot.... lol.

the civic shifter works if you put on a different cage, no grinding of the ball necessary.

This is correct. I have a skunk2 one in my car now with the civic cage

You're going to need a bigger master cylinder so you're moving the same amount of fluid as before. When you shorten the throw, you have to increase the amount of fluid moved.

indeed. i think the m/c that was attached to this booster was a 7/8". I hope a 15/16" would be big enough as it's the biggest one I got. I've got plenty of different sized boosters if i ever need to change anything. trial and error ftw

I played around and found a 1" MC. I think it was from a '94 Accord. Next time I'm at the junkyard, I'll confirm.

I didn't know 5gs had a 1" m/c. I might actually have one here if that's the case. If not, I wonder if a 4g Si prelude has a 1" m/c

What year civic?

for those making a shorter throw shifter, if you add more then 3/4in to the extension of the lower portion below the ball it will rub the heat shield. Its easy to bend out of the way or just remove it entirely but to me it was there for a reason and should stay. I just thought other should know there is a a limit to how much you can add. With the last one I had built it has 1in added to it and its a super short throw. I bet total throw is less then 2 inches. you can barley feel when you overlap a gear shifting from 1st to 3rd. Its great but takes some getting used to as well.

oh yeah i noticed when I installed it, it rubbed on the heat shield. i found the shifter a bit too short for my likings

can't remember what year civic. i ended up using a bigger booster cause the civic one wasn't cutting it. dunno what the bigger one is from, probably a stock accord one

i think you can take the heat shield off and do a little metal work with a ball peen hammer, and add some clearance, it's soft metal and easy to work with, i had to clearance it a bit for my exhaust bends in a couple of places
