This first post is a little story of how we (my dad and me) got into 3rd gen accords, what happened to the them and how I got my own 3gee, you can skip this intro if you want to

This is my 89 coupe LXI, I got this accord around 3 years ago (as my first car and w/ a lot of problems) and ever since I've owned it's been repairs after another (mostly mechanical), but even though sometimes it was a pain in the ass to get it fixed I still love this car. Before I ever found this site I didn't know what aftermarket parts (if any) they had for this car or all the different things you can modify . I did eventually found this site and join but since I didn't know a lot about forums and then my Internet was disconnected I forgot about this site :uh:. About a year later we got the Internet back and eventually found this website again (I think it was by accident). I did lurk around then did my intro (after 2 years, FAIL) and here I am.

These are all the major things I've done to the car so far (that I can remember).
I cleaned the interior (it needed one badly), j/y wheels and new tires, new motor mounts, better p/s pump, new rack and pinion, used p/s high pressure hose, clutch, cd player, CV shafts (both), timing belt, oil pump O-ring (from switching to synthetic). I recently tinted the windows, added a prelude steering wheel and changed the passenger side CV shaft for the 3rd time (in less than 3 years) and soon I will have to do the driver side again (good thing they have lifetime warranty)

When I was doing the cv shaft

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/2039/cimg1582jke.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/221/cimg1582jke.jpg/)

This is how I drove it for a couple days now freshly tinted .......Where is the bumper? :nervous:

Well, my dad and me have been working on this for a while.

Before eeek!
http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/4490/cimg1558.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/857/cimg1558.jpg/)

I cut a piece off so it would bend better
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/6755/cimg1586p.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/41/cimg1586p.jpg/)

now it's looking much better
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/8230/cimg1589h.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/90/cimg1589h.jpg/)

I used this to straighten it out
http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/4323/cimg1591.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/861/cimg1591.jpg/)

Since I could never find an intega lip at least I could use the clips
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/1992/cimg1590i.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/197/cimg1590i.jpg/)

This wasn't the cleanest fiberglass job but it did the job and besides nobody can see it
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/5666/cimg1628ou.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/12/cimg1628ou.jpg/)

Not to bad for my first time working with bondo
http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/1881/cimg1632r.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/844/cimg1632r.jpg/)

I kind of wanted to cut the ends off but my dad convinced me to glue them back on and I'm glad I did that
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/4687/cimg1629u.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/9/cimg1629u.jpg/)

I added bondo later
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/4690/cimg1630i.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/713/cimg1630i.jpg/)

http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/4462/cimg1634o.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/833/cimg1634o.jpg/)

I already painted it and I just need to install it........ after I fix the leak I found on the car yesterday

So I finally found the coolant leak and It was a bitch to find.

The leak came from the bottom hose and if you can see the pipes were very dirty
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/3535/cimg1660.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/823/cimg1660.jpg/)

If you see the hose is pretty bloated with a pin size whole
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6641/cimg1661h.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/135/cimg1661h.jpg/)

old vs. the first one I put on
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/8845/cimg1665j.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/26/cimg1665j.jpg/)

Got the pipes nice and clean, then put everything back YAY!
http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/3191/cimg1664.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/cimg1664.jpg/)

http://img808.imageshack.us/img808/9331/cimg1666j.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/808/cimg1666j.jpg/)

I started the engine and I was hoping it wasn't going to leaking but the hope was gone in a few minutes :crying:. So I took it apart again, while it was still hot, and got a smaller hose. It did feel a lot more snug so I was confident it was it wasn't going to leak.
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/631/cimg1667.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/69/cimg1667.jpg/)

Put it all back together again, crossed my fingers, and started the car and.............. IT DIDN'T LEAK :D

Took a picture of the engine bay after I cleaned it.

I found them in the j/y for $60 but they were in pretty rough shape. It took us a week to get them looking like that. They're Prime wheels this what they looked like new http://www.primewheel.com/prime_specs.aspx?wheelid=50&wheelimg=188

Ever since I tinted the windows (three weeks ago) I've been driving without door and back panels so we decided to take the top part and re-upholster with some vinyl we had. In the end it looked alright also the sponge we put was too thick but by the next day it started to fall off , so we left it like that and forgot about it.

This is when we did it.
IT'S NAKED!!!
http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/6514/cimg1647o.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/192/cimg1647o.jpg/)

This is how it turned out (you can see my thumb print on the side)
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/3953/cimg1654t.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/823/cimg1654t.jpg/)

Yesterday, we were cleaning the garage and since most of my interior is taking a lot of space we decided to look for a shop that does upholstery so I can put everything in my car again. We eventually found one and they asked me what color I wanted and this is where I'm stumped. The guy that was doing it told me he needed an answer by Wednesday morning cause thats when he's going to work on them.

So should I get ivory or go with black?

obdriver6
06-01-2011, 09:28 AM
Well the guy that was doing my interior pieces called me last night and he needed an answer so I gave him one. He told me they would probably be ready this afternoon. I'll post pictures when I get them.

Well I finally got my interior pieces and they're AWSOME!!! way better than what we did. Now the bad thing it is that I have to sand and paint all the little trim pieces that have been sun damaged for 20yrs.
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/8121/cimg1699w.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/cimg1699w.jpg/)

http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/8128/cimg1700w.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/713/cimg1700w.jpg/)

I did do one really "fast" and this is how it turned out (took me about an hour)
New(semi) vs. old
http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9736/cimg1701z.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/62/cimg1701z.jpg/)

Now I have to that 10 more time and put it back together.

That sucks, when I took mine off I broke a piece but nothing that serious. Hope you get that fixed soon.

I painted all the little trim pieces. It was a bit of a pain but they turned out good.
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/5441/cimg1702x.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/641/cimg1702x.jpg/)

So when I thought I was finished I looked at the door and saw the trim that goes around the seat belt :uh: so I took the seat belt off to see if I could take the piece off. After a while I realized I couldn't and since I didn't want to cut it I taped the seat belt.

Not the best but it worked.

Thanks. I thought It wasn't gonna look right because of the he way the door panel goes down but you can't even notice it when the door is closed. When I got in the car today the whole car smelled like vinyl so I got to let it air out. Also since I had the door panels off I decide to tighten up the springs in my seat belts so they wouldn't sag so much.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed a small click on the front driver side wheel when ever I stopped, turned or accelerated so I went and checked it out. I noticed that the upper ball joints needed to be replaced. Since they weren't that bad (not a lot of play) I left them alone for know (till I get enough money for new prelude control arms).

Also, ever since I changed my clutch I been having trouble with my tach. The needle would start to twitch and go crazy when I went to WOT or close to (but not all the time) but recently it started to get worse (now even at normal acceleration or cruising) so I decided to change the dizzy with one I had laying around and that seemed to fix the problem. Then my a/c compressor decide to take a crapper and lock up. So when I was changing the dizzy I decided to remove the a/c comp belt, as I was under the car removing the belt I looked up and I'm pretty sure my face turned white because I saw the bolt of the lower control arm coming out. When I finished taking off the belt I started to tighten the bolt. It had backed out about 6 turn and I'm glad I found it on time.

I went for a test drive and the engine was smooth, no crazy tach and no more click so I should be good for a couple more weeks before something else goes wrong. lol

Thanks! I don't know how to make pics bigger but you can click on the picture and view them on flickr. I know I have to lower it but my dad wanted to cut the springs but I'm not sure or I could wait till a have enough money for sprint/tokico set up.

cutting the springs wont be 100% terrible, if you do it right but i believe it will be pretty stiff.
that thing looks really nice i cant wait to get mine painted.
but, if you cut the springs i wouldnt drive it for an extended amount of days and take bumps and stuff really careful.

Thanks! I guess you're right, I could try cutting the springs for now and buy a proper suspension later. If it doesn't work out I can just switch to the spare suspension I have

Yeah now that its mint I need POWER!!!

Well I went to start my car today and it just cranked over. Turned the key again and the same thing happened. After doing my diagnosis I found out that the fuel pump is shot. I'll see if I can pick one up at the pick-a-part tomorrow. (I know, I'm cheap)

if you dont find a working on at the jy, i suggest buying one of these. ( i still suggest this over the jy. cause you never know how long a used one will work, if it works )
i bought my new pump from these guys and it works great.
brand new purolator pump for $40 total after shipping, which beats part stores like autozone by like almost $100..

I know what you mean, even a walbro is cheaper than the regular pump but thanks for letting me know but I really couldn't wait since I needed the car the next day. I did manage to find a good pump but its really loud so I don't expect it to last but it runs.

obdriver6
09-29-2011, 12:15 AM
I used an 89+ supra lip. Although it looks really good and its not exaggerated it was kind of a PIA to make it fit because it was in two pieces and it was a little longer as you can see from the pics. I wanted something different since a lot of people have the integra lip and also I already had it. :D

It was pretty nasty but I'll get it cleaned up before I install it. The only thing that was disappointing was that the back plate that cover the screws is blue.

obdriver6

Also my damn seat belt release button broke. I almost got to class late but as soon as class ended I took the release button apart so I could take all the little red pieces out. I did manage to fix it but now the cover is broken which I don't mind for now.

Also, a couple of days ago while I was working on the fog lights the sky turned kind of freaky here in vegas and my neighbor was outside. He told me if I wanted to take a picture of it with my car with his camera, I was like "HELL YEAH!" He told me that he would need to combine two pics so both the car and sky come out clear. It was a quick photoshoot cause it only lasted like 10 min.

This wasn't that great, I felt like it needed more of an angle!

I was going to ask, did you do anything to the camber? when you lower more than 1.4" you cant adjust any more out. I ate my good tires within one summer. Look into Prelude control arms for the front, they are relatively cheap and give more adjustment options. Well set suspension makes up for less power.

I meant the car color on top of the front and rear bumper, but now i see it was already like that before you painted it. I think all CA accords in Europe have black on top of the bumper. After looking a bit harder i see it's a complete different bumper than on my '89. Must be the facelift i read about. For as far as i know Europe never had the facelift models.
And about the wheels, i'm in the same situation, don't like mine, but need the money for more important things...
All in good time.

So, what are your plans, if i may ask?

^^ I know that the hatchback didn't get a facelift bumper, maybe the aerodeck didn't get one either........Like I said before, I do want some 16" rims, get new bushings and ball joint, better suspension set up, 11" rotor upgrade and a bunch of other little stuff that I can't remember but hopefully this year I can get a B20B/Z in it!

Since I last posted, nothing has been done to the car. lol I did decide to re-polish and paint my wheels so the car is rolling on temporary wheels till i'm done. I also bough some goodies for my car that I've been waiting for for some time. I'll see if I can post pics later today.

Monthly update!

Car has been running good so far other than the battery crapping out on me yesterday, time for a new one. Anyway, I recently fixed the dash light problem I've had ever since I bought the car, it turned out to be really simple thanks to the repair manual. I also recently installed the prelude arms to get rid of as much camber as I could. After a test drive, I realized I now need an alignment. lol I also installed the prothane end links.

Camber!

I forgot to say that I went to the jy a couple days ago and got a couple of good things. I finally managed to find a set of silverstar headlights and the wiring for the fog lights (too lazy to make my own lol). Also, they brought in a mint coupe. It had rear mud flaps and the rear center tail light was in mint condition which I might get. I only removed the lower part of the door panel that I've been searching for YEARS.

Silverstars and lower door panel.

Yeah I been looking for these lights for some time. I've heard they are a lot brighter than the OEM ones. The only reason I got them is because I don't want to get HIDS and be blinding other driver. I'll make a comparison between the ones I have and the silverstars. I'll see if I can snatch those rear mud flap cause I know there are some people that always looking for a pair. lol I don't know if it has the gasket since my dad is the one that pulled it from the jy but I'm glad he got it cause those are had to find in good condition!

Thanks for the compliment! My temporary set up is cut springs with extended top hats. I recently added some crappy coilover sleeve up front before I went to cali for CAM. They are a bit stiffer but not enough to save my strut tower from the UCA. I know its not the best set up but I was really tired of people telling me to lower my car!

I have 195/50/15 with a +38 offset wheel (from what I measured), The car was painted the original color with the trunk and door jambs repainted. You can see how the car used to look like in the 1st page.

Nice bro way better.
Thanks but I'm still a longs way away from how I want it. lol

I especially like that the emblems are shaved. Way too busy on the trunk lid with all that crap. You are an artist!
Well the thing is that they're not actually shaved (You can see the holes). lol I've always liked how the emblems looked on the accord and the idea was to install them as soon as the paint job was finished. The thing is that I lost them and in the time it took me to find them I started to like the way it did without them. So since I don't to want to fill the hole and repaint those areas, the emblems will be going back on.

On the trim along the rear windows, your car had some black covering missing; it's where the underlying chrome was exposed. I have the same situation on my 88 coupe and I've seen photos of other coupes here in the forum that show the same problem. Did your painter paint the trim all the around or just the areas where the covering had come off? If he painted just the areas where the covering had come off, can you tell a difference between it and the doors if you look closely? If he did all the trim, did he first remove the covering on the doors so that it would look consistent all the way around or did he paint over the existing black trim? Does the trim has a glossy or flat finish?

Did you buy the paint for the car or did your painter buy it? Do you know the source of the paint?

On the side trim I pretty much did the same thing on this thread. (http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=52493). I'm not sure what was done on the front but the rear were sanded down and coated with a adhesion promoter. All the trim was painted flat black and when I say all the trim, I mean ALL THE TRIM. lol The painter got the paint so I don't know what brand he used or where he got it.

They look similar but the mounting bracket is different. I might experiment with to find way to use them for more support in the market.

I did install spacers, you can see from the pics of when its installed. I pretty much followed the "How to" (somewhat lol). I didn't compared them since I knew the 3g prelude control arms wouldn't give you as much adjustments as the 2g ones. Well I got military mase's old set up, which has a 2" drop. It took me a while to figure out how to adjust the front konis but I got it. The front suspension went in without a problem but I adjusted the coilover too low but I fixed it now. The rears where a bit problematic. Since I knew the back had a 2" drop, I decide to drop the coilover another inch. Well when I drop the car, it looked like it was at stock height and I'm like "WTF?" So I dropped it as much as I could and its still to high for me. Can anyone give me advise on what I did wrong?

The Cruise control computer systems is located left of the clutch in the corner of body under the dash. I recommend removing the interior fuse box first. The cruise should be clear it carries one screw and a positioning insert so after removing that screw gently wobble it out of the mount.

The shocks are the right one, only difference is that they were revalve to 300/100. I did talk to ground control to see if they were mixed by mistake, I gave them the # and everything but they told me they were right but I still have my doubts.

Since I didn't know why it wouldn't go any lower I took the rear suspension off again to lower it as much as I could. this is what I did.

When I took it off. You can see its not as low as it can be with the metal circle thing.
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8434/7715329130_b1272d62da_z.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ob_driver6/7715329130/)

So I removed it and lowered the adjuster all the way down.

Since I took that off, the sleeved moved a lot more. So I took the plastic thin that goes around the shock and installed some fat o rings.

Ok, send me your konis and I'll send you my bilsteins! ;)

put the metal circle thing back on, take sleeve off, and just put springs in. Or try turning the sleeve upside down..

If I run just the spring, it wouldn't sit right since the circle thing is too small which ever way I put it and you're the second person that has suggested I turn the sleeves upside down but that would add about another 1/2" drop (which I think it still shy from the 3" drop) meanwhile I can turn the fronts all the way down and I'm pretty sure the control arms will hit before the spring fully compresses (which I'm pretty sure is more than a 3" drop). Thats how I came to the conclusion that I need to swap out the springs.

Small update: Ever since my last post not much has been done to the car, not the even the spring swap. I did finally managed to fix my A/C (after 2 months of trying to work on it) only for it to brake down 2 weeks later, FAIL! I first thought there was a leak or that the jy compressor went out but it turned out my expansion valve took a shit. I replace it, flushed the lines again aaaaaaand take 2......... worked like a charm, blowing 42 degree air when its 100+ outside. Not bad for of less than $200 which was converting from a broken Keihin compressor to a JY Nippondenso with bracket and lines, flushing the lines (twice), new receiver drier, new seals, new oil, new expansion valve and converting to R-134. Hopefully it will last a couple years.

Yeah been busy the last couple of weeks and you know these cars never ending project. As soon as you fix something, something else brakes! Two weeks ago I learned that 1 of my lower ball joints is shot and one of the top one too so I'll just replace all four at the same time when I get the money! :P

The clearance between the body and ground is pretty big but I guess it doesn't seem in the pic. To tell you the truth I only want to lower it about another .5" but the thing is that I would love to have the option of lowering it even further than that just for car meets or special occasion. :D Ah yes, A/C is a must in Vegas during summer. I was getting tired of having streaks of sweat every time I drove my car more than 10min! lol

Ok well it seems that its been a while since I have posted anything in this thread. I'll see if I can sum up everything that I have done to the car so far.

1) I was tired of seeing my fugly valve cover so I decided to make it pretty by polishing it.

Way too nice to be in my engine bay! :(
http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8339/8190337508_3022916df2_z.jpg

2)Finally found all the side moldings from a hatchback for my coupe thanks to my dad. :) Also got to thank dacantu for the idea

3)I also got to switch my springs from the back to the front and vise versa. It did lower my car another .75" -1" in the back (at the lowest setting) which I am perfectly happy with but I can still drop the front way more than the back. I was bored so when I was doing the switch, I decided to set the sleeves all the way down......... too bad it only lasted 1 day. :P lol

If I had some wheels with better offset, it would looks even sexier.

Like I said, it only lasted 1 day and trust me, you don't want me painting your car!

Update: I had to raise the rears about 1/2 an inch cause it was bottoming out the shocks. ohhhh also, I finally (after 5 years of owning this car) decide to a "performance" upgrade to my car. I know it wont be a huge increase in power (if any) but I'm tired of seen my valve cover all pretty with nothing to compliment it. I will post pics of that once I get all the parts I need.

I rather not mess with that but I think might have found an alternative. This ducktail (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fits-85-91-BMW-3-Series-E30-BB-S-Style-Rear-Trunk-Lip-Spoiler-wing-Fiberglass-/301256181456?fits=Make%3ABMW)

ITS UPDATE TIME!!!

So a while back I was able to get a spare motor with trans for my car from a fellow 3geez enthusiast. The reason for this is because I plan to replace the current engine I have with this one and run the turbo along the OBD1 set up and B16 mani. It will be a sort of test engine so I can make sure everything is running correctly. The current engine that is in my car, once removed, will be semi-built with forged pistons, forged rods, upgrade cam, bisi valve spring, upgrade clutch and maybe a couple other things. This will be a long process and a lot of $$$$$ but hopefully it will be finished in under 3 years. I do plan to at least do the OBD1 conversion and turbo before the year ends. For now, I'm taking baby steps which means getting the spare engine ready.

This is when I first got the engine. Definitely not the prettiest

Yeah I came to this same conclusion as well. I've already pulled the fans and tested a slim fans. Youbmay have to go with one 10 or 12 inch fan for the cold side and the hot side would be to be a 10 inch or nothing at all.
Also I'm have a buddy that builds drift car make jess and I traction bar's soon. He's willing to make more then one and would work on both stock and swap motors. The traction should give you the room your looking for.
