ok so i will let my 87 warm up and the farthest it will go is a couple of degrees lower than half. before it would warm up too half way and it would remain there unless it was cold and i was on the freeway. so my question is could it be a faulty fail safe thermostat or can it be i got bubbles in my cooling system or is that normal? any input will be helpful thanks

Definitely thinking it's the thermostat.

Mine was like that, bleed the cooling system, make sure ALL the air is out

Its normal for the temperature gauge to be at half way or a few millimeters below half when completely warmed up. I think if your thermostat failed it would be at a quarter or something. You can always check the thermostat, make sure there is enough coolant and good coolant in there, then bleed the air out.

Edit: also make sure that your thermostat has the small hole in it to help bleed the system. The hole should be positioned so its at the top when installed.
