It may not be the coolest thing on earth, but, hey..I did it myself..
bought 12V round warm white colored florescent lamp, remove my inner headlights (those are high beam headlights), grab a hot air gun blower to melt glue which bonds glass lens and reflector, fit the florescent to the lens, re-glue headlights..http://img857.imageshack.us/img857/7558/dsc00500t.jpg

these are $5 12 volt round florescent lamp, which come in a set of two, each has one ballast attached.
I only bought a set. next week I will buy another set for my outer headlights

Ha those are pretty sweet! I like how they are yellow. They'll look pretty cool when you're driving in town with the low beams on, you'll still be able to see those. :) Nice DIY.

What do they do to the light pattern from the regular headlight bulbs?

well actually i dont take much picture during the process, but here is the lamp.
it has a ballast/inverter with socket. the ballast itself has 2 wire, red and black. you connect red to battery positive, black to negative, and the lamp will turn on instantly.

First you have to separate the headlight lens from its reflector. you will have to use hot air gun to melt the glue.
once separated, you can glue the florescent lamp to the inner side of the lens, using a transparent silicone sealer.

drill a hole to sneak the wire out from reflector, connect it to the ballast.

they dont affect the regular headlight pattern, since they are so thin, and translucent. of course its color affect a little. but I choose yellow, and the halogen bulbs are also yellow, so they blend together.
