View Full Version : Finally, I'm BACK in a 3G!!

That DX I thought I was going to snag back in March fell the hell through (guy was a douchebag, talked up how awesome the car was, then suddenly wanted 2x the price, just total fucktard)

Anyway, sitting in my front yard is what will be the wife's new daily - '89 Accord LXi Coupe 5 speed / sunroof for $400. Supposed BHG, we'll see what I find after a new battery.

Turbo project is still on! 8psi blown A20A3 with a mild cam, intercooled, on an OBD1 ecu setup. Asked the SO what she thought of it, her words - "I heart boost, you know that!"

Pics tomorrow. Got a very slight bit of rust around the sunroof, and the seal appears to be shot, so off the search 3Geez.

For anyone that doesn't know, and didn't care, I had the $50 '88 DX 4 door back in '08-'09... ended up having to sell her for $900, and I've been looking for a clean 3G ever since.

NO IDEA WHY I LOVE THESE CARS SO MUCH :( I'm happy to have one again!!

I love the style... My old 88 had a broken front coil spring, busted shocks, bent radius arm and still handled better than any other beater I've had. Going to fix this one up right :)

I amember you...was jetting a weber holley before I think
Good luck on price matching, good price btw... they can opt out of those sometimes by comparing the free replacement warrenty, advance has some of the highest month terms for those.

Sorry about the tarp, not taking any chances of the sunroof leaking until I get a chance to go over it thoroughly... the inner shade says SKY TOP if anyone knows anything about it? PICS:

piston rings and head gasket. wow those numbers are lower than my black coupe :omg:

Doward
07-07-2011, 05:13 PM
It's raining, so I'll do another test tomorrow after squirting a bit of oil into the combustion chambers. If it comes up - worn rings (motor only has 101k tho), if not, head gasket is the likely culprit.

Might just yank and re-ring the motor with fresh bearings anyway, though...

good pickup man, that shit looks pretty nice for the price. wish i could find something like that.

Doward
07-08-2011, 08:08 PM
Vanilla, I might hit you up on that - Current plan of attack:

1) Pull head, inspect, rebuild top end of engine, retest compression
2) Fix the sunroof
3) Roll-on paint job (Rustoleum Sand)
4) Suspension/brakes (4 wheel discs + poly bushings)
5) OBD-1 conversion
6) Built a20 + LX/DX 5 speed (want the lower final drive ratio) / Turbo

I intend to keep this 3G for a long, LONG time :)

Vanilla Sky
07-08-2011, 08:16 PM
For the cost, I'd install megasquirt instead of OBD1. It's really about the same price, but MS is SO much more configurable.

Doward
07-08-2011, 09:47 PM
It's going to depend on whether or not I find an OBD1 Integra / Civic sitting in the u-pull-it :) If I can find one there, I can get ECU / Distributor / harness for about $50.

Convert the distributor, rework the harness, chip the ECU, and away we go :) If not, MS2 will be the backup plan.

Vanilla Sky
07-09-2011, 11:39 AM
I'd skip straight to MS3. I'm more of a geek than needed for fuel injection, though.

If you're buying the parts to make the distributor fit and the conversion harness, you're well into MS3 territory, price wise. From there, it gets more difficult to set up, but for crank fire ignition, it's completely worth it to me.

I would, but the MS3 system I've got here is already slated to go into the Supra.

And honestly, I have no need *at all* for the extra capabilities of the MS3 vs MS2. Hell, I WOULD just go MS1 on it, but I do like the extra resolution of the MS2.

As for OBD1 conversion, if I can find what I need at the u-pull-it, I'm only looking at $50 or so... we'll see, first gotta see if what I need is out there ;)

Head is off, I've got pics around somewhere. The head gasket had no major issues I could spot - I'm picking up the head tomorrow, then I'll slam it all back together over the weekend and do another compression test, including a leak down if warranted.

The headliner is out - it was total garbage. The sunroof is actually and entire assembly that bolts in - I'll get pics of it at some point over the weekend, then I'll be pulling that entire assembly out so I can test the electric retraction motor and everything else.

Not bad for a Saturday  Should have the engine buttoned back up tomorrow!

Tonight I'll:
1) Finish putting the head bolts in, torque all to spec
2) Finish installing the 'front' of the engine with new belts
3) Hook up the electrical system

Tomorrow will be:
1) Grab some 1/4" and 5/8" line to finish some coolant house routing
2) Flush (forward and back) the cooling system
3) Fluids

Is there an easy way to drain the fuel tank in these 3Gs, short of 'punch a hole'?

Poor engine looks rough, but I should finish buttoning her up tomorrow and then I'll see if she fires for me :)

Anybody have a pic of where the hose from the PCV valve goes on the EFI engine? Previous owner had a water hose (yellow garden hose, I shit you not) running from the valve cover down to the side of the transmission as his ventilation system.

I'm fairly certain it'll just go up to the post-TB port on the intake manifold, but would rather check, first ;)

Got a cheap $25 ebay (new) Fuel pump + strainer on the way, going to see if I can bring her back to life.

Doward
08-31-2012, 10:58 PM
Not yet, that's on my agenda. You're saying the brake lights should still light up, even with the key outside of the vehicle?

Fuel pump should be going in on Monday!

obdriver6
08-31-2012, 11:40 PM
Yep. A couple of weeks ago me and a buddy were picking up somebody, after a while we got out of the car to get some ice cream, as I was walking back to the car I noticed my brake lights were ON. So I started looking under the dash and found that the rubber piece the pushes on the brake switch was missing and since we where in a hurry I just ended up putting a screw where the rubber piece is suppose to go. You could also have a mis-adjusted switch. Sorry for blabbering! lol

Doward
09-01-2012, 01:52 PM
That's great information! I may actually move that circuit to an ignition-only. But I bet when i check the wiring harness, I'll find the brake lights are involved with the hazard circuit, which clearly needs 12v constant.

I'll dig out my manuals and see what I find out. Looking forward to installing the fuel pump on Monday, though! Hope to finally get her to fire up.

Civic Accord Honda
09-01-2012, 02:49 PM
the brake lights should only turn on when you press the pedel lol (good to leave it that way if your car stalls out or something you still want the lights on ) but if there staying on like when your not pushing the pedel down then its the switch under the dash on the pedel arm. little piece of rubber breaks off and they dont off

Fuel pump pressurizes. After charging the battery, spin her over... no run.

Ok, check spark again - good, strong spark. Pop the service bolt on the fuel filter, and I've got fuel pressure.

So next will be a) verifying correct fuel pressure and b) noid lights on the fuel injectors.

If I have good fuel pressure and the noid lights confirm commanded fuel from the ECU, then I'm looking at sending the injectors off to have them cleaned!

Civic Accord Honda
09-03-2012, 05:08 PM

Doward

What guarantee do I have that they'll work? My guy charges $18/injector, fully blueprinted and flowtested. I'd rather spend the $72 to KNOW they are perfect ;)

But first, I have to make sure they are even being commanded to operate.

Alright, latest update on the car (been working on her sporadically)

Double checked the timing, got her to fire up (had to pedal her to get her to start) - she warms up a bit, then stalls out. Great.

That was 3 days ago, and I haven't been able to get the car to fire back up for me. I'm beginning to think I may need to drop the fuel tank, pick up another fuel filter, and do a full clean and flush of the entire fuel system. I'm almost certain I have more garbage in the fuel system again. Ugh.
