So I have an 87' LX-I hatch with 221,000 miles and recently did a tune-up. I replaced the plugs with NGK G-Power's, NGK wires, cheap cap and rotor from Autozone, and sea-foamed the engine twice. I filled it up with 87 octane from Chevron and reset the trip odometer and drove for 168 miles on I-5 going about 70-75 mph. Pulled over and filled up with 3.96 gallons. That's 42MPG!! Needless to say, I'm excited.

The back hatch is gutted, I have stock size 13in wheels and tires and the A/C is out. All that plus the tune-up got me that high of mileage. Before the tune-up I was lucky to get 25mpg highway.

Anyone else get that high?

I believe it. On the old motor used to get 42 highway and 38 highway pulling a trailer with a motorcycle on it. :)

I typically only get 20-22 mpg (city) in my A/T 89 LXi Hatchback. Spark plugs were recently replaced before I bought the car back in april, I added STP to the gas tank last month, air idle control valve has been cleaned out, and the idle RPMs are much lower now, unfortunately it seems my mpg has not changed at all... 42 is pretty much double what I'm getting. I sure wish my car was getting that kind of gas mileage!

Well my city mpg is only about 20-25. So pretty close to yours. But I'm sure I could get better around town if I was lighter on the gas and shifted sooner (M/T).

I only get about 21-22 mpgs (mostly city). I've done new plugs/wires/cap/rotor, air and fuel filters, timing belt, water pump, replaced some seals, cleaned IAC, replaced FITV valve, ran sea foam through it, coolant flush... I really don't know what else to do, haha. It's pretty irritating that my car has no balls and gets crap mpgs for a 4 cylinder.

Impressive for a small sample size under fairly ideal conditions. I am getting ~29 mpg over the last few years of driving and taking stats at each fill up.

that's what I got consistantly with the LX before I swapped to the jdm engine, that was with a mildly modified A20A1 and not really trying.

Now that car gets 25 and trying hard, yes it needs some fine tuning.
The Lxi hatch gets better than 25 I know but not much better, it too has some issue like a untraceable misfire. Im using those denso plugs so I may try NGK whick I know I should be using anyway.

42 is phenominal around here, lots of rivers and creeks so it's hilly.

I get 19-25mpg city, maybe 40mpg (generally 33-35mpg) on the freeway if I stay under 55mph and use premium gasoline.

I drive a pretty big combination of highway and city, and on my last tank I got 365 miles.
