My car was making a weird noise, so I sprayed some belt conditioner on all* of the belts (*that were there), and the noise stopped...but I realized that there is a belt completely missing from my engine, and honestly, I don't know how long it's been gone. There is an identically sized gear/spline that is closer to the front of the car, under the alternator? Pictures:

Do I have to have it? Would pushing the air conditioning button without a belt be a bad idea?

I cut mine off since the A/C didn't work and I hardly use it anyway, less drag on the motor:thumbup:

there wouldn't be any point as there is nothing to drive the compressor it would just sit there

Another thing is: my air conditioning still works...somewhat. It's not ice-cold, but it definitely does not blow hot air, even in the summer.

if you have a belt on your power steering pump, and a belt on the water pump and alternator, then your AC DOESN'T WORK, it needs the belt to be hooked up to do anything

I looked at the pictures again and you don't have ac in any form anymore,I see a power steering belt and an alternator belt

...yet when I push that air conditioning button, cold air blows. Normal cold air, I guess? How hard is it to replace the belt?

Good eyesight!

There is no compressor pulley down there, only the crank pulley...:thumbdn:

um the groove for the AC belt is whats open, alternator water pump is on the inside, ac belt is in the middle, and the PS belt is on the outside on the smallest groove http://i56.tinypic.com/678d2h.jpg

My air conditioning compressor is there, you just can't see it from the angles of the photos.

Why is everone so concerned about seeing the compressor? You can see the belt missing on the crank pulley
