Hello guys! Ive always been an accord fan, I currently have a 96 EXR.
But I really like the older hatchback body style.

I found an 87 Hatchback S (In Canada they rebadged DX to S) for sale a few months ago, the seller wanted 800 bucks for it. It had 180000km on it, lots of new parts:
Exhaust, front springs, alternator, plugs, distributor, fuel tank and pump...
It had a bit of rust here and there but thats expected in Canada. Still in really good shape, thats because this car was built in Sayama, Saitama, Japan (Checked the VIN). The car hadn't been driven since 2009.

After a few months of little interest in the car and realizing that it doesnt start anymore, the seller got desperate and relisted it for $300. Finally its worth my time!

I went and checked it out and was surprised how well it looked, the paint was peeling everywhere, but thats minor. I figured I could 'redneck' this car and get it going, we poured some gasoline into the carburator and she started right up, I drove it for 20 seconds before needing more fuel!
So she did run! And the brakes werent seized! So I made an offer.

Got her for $225 !
Which is less than the value of it as scrap, how could I lose?
I also got a set of new tires not on rims, thats at least $100.
Half a tank of gas, another $40.
And lots of good parts on it.....

Anyway, towed her home to fix her up. Turns out that 'new' fuel pump was defective. Ive ordered a new one, once that gets here she should be good to go, everything else works, popup lights, radio, etc!

Photos to come! Tells me I need 5 post min.... stupid

Another reason I was so interested in this car is because vehicles built in 1987 or before do not require emissions testing in ontario, which is such a cash grab... $40 every 2 years and if it doesnt pass, you could be fucked.

Fuel pump still hasnt arrived, so I decided to remove the fuel filler neck.
It was rusty inside the pipe and the metal felt crunchy.

Looks bad in there
http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/355/img20111008135037.jpg

Pulled the pipes out, yea those 2 pieces are supposed to be welded together, but they were completely rust, probably 24 years old!
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/6198/img20111008135031.jpg

I left the other two pieces, so I know which hoses they connect to when I get the replacement part.

I found the part for $50 on ebay. Shipping to canada is $55 :( Might ship it to Ogdensburg, NY and go pick it up.

I think that rust in there might be part of a Honda recall. Its worth checking out, it might help a lot. Instead of the pump itself being bad maybe its blocked with rust or dirt. That or the blockage could be causing the pumps to fail. The other thing that makes the pumps not work is the main relay. If you turn on the car, you should here 2 quick clicks coming from above the interior cabin fuse box. This is a known problem for these cars and without the second click the fuel pump gets no voltage. Welcome to the board, you have your work cut out for you.

recall eh? well i dont think theyll offer any free recall / warranty on a car this old!
and it is the pump, i pulled it out and bench tested it... its odd though the pump is only a few months old, and it looks mint... i guess these things just die.
funny thing, i was driving the chevy today, just filled up at the gas station, drove maybe 20 seconds then the car died.. i managed to roll into a parking lot, the fuel pump on it died too! it was still making its clicking noise, but wouldnt pump.
lucky its just a simple in line fuel pump, i changed it right there in the parking lot, and made it to thanksgiving dinner on time! thank god i did, the misses was totally pissed

as far as i know honda will honor the recalls if they have not been already done, i had the fuel filler neck recall done back in 07/08 for my 87 hatchback, all they needed was a week to get the part before i brought it in. They also did the seat belt recall as well.

mtaylor

hmm, well ill give them a call and see what they will do. I already removed the filler neck, maybe they will just give me the part and i can put it on myself...

i got my delphi fuel pump repair kit yesterday. I installed the new pump, and it works, but it must be pumping too strong, it floods the carburator after a few seconds.
So if i crank it for a few seconds, it floods, then pull the fuse for the pump, then crank some more, it will turn on and run for about 20-30 seconds...so annoyed, did they send me a FI fuel pump?

I had an extra in-line fuel pump (when I exchanged the one that died on my chevy) and hooked that up, its rated at 5.5-9psi. This worked so much better, i was able to run the accord for 5 minutes....... it burns alot of oil though.

Thanks for the tip about the recall, I went down to honda today, and they confirmed they will replace the filler neck and the plate it bolts to no problem! This is great I dont have to cut+weld a new plate and I dont have to buy the filler neck, which was about $100.
Too bad they wouldnt just give me the parts to do it myself, ill have to tow the car there to have it replaced.

the one thing i did not care for was the "pocket" that is included with the neck recall, they riveted it on right on the edge of door area due to the pocket being rusted out. The best would be welding it in there, but the Honda recall manual probably says to rivet it

mtaylor
10-14-2011, 05:51 AM
yes it does say to rivet, they are trying to save time/money anyway possible.
if it looks shitty ill weld it myself!

Got the car running and driving today! I installed an in-line fuel pump in the engine bay to suck gas from the tank. Works great. Ran the wires through those convenient rust holes@!
Shes got good power and nice power steering, my buddy was driving it with 1 finger. lol
Not much blue smoke anymore (I put the muffler back on)

I got the old accord registered and got a temporary permit today,
I paid less than $30 of tax on it!! Had to cough up another 35 for the plate and permit, oh well.

It was my first legal drive in it today, took it all the way to the dealership, a whopping 2.6km!! The car has no problem driving once its warmed up, it died a few times when I first turned it on and the idle dropped. I had to keep reving it to get it warmed up, no biggie...

Shifting from park to drive usually causes the car to jump a bit, I guess thats because its idling too high... Another odd thing is the car stays in first gear until I get to about 5000rpm, then its a sudden jerky shift into 2nd. Im not mashing the gas either, just slowly accelerating. Is that normal??

Then there is the run-on when I turn it off, Ill shoot some carb cleaner into it, maybe that'll do the trick.

IDIOTS EVERYWHERE!

In my last post I said I brought the car in to the dealer for the recal job, well about a week ago I went there in person, with the recall documentation and told them to order all the parts. They scheduled me to come in tuesday (yesterday). I call monday to verify all the parts had arrived. Yes yes yes I was told.....

So I went and got my temporary permit yesterday, which gives me 10 days to drive the car, and get the final inspection done on it. My plan was to get these fuel pipes replaced, then go get the safety inspection right away.

I dropped the car off yesterday morning, when I went to pick it up last night I discovered they hadn't done anything!!!!

So Im totally pissed off, Im here with a temp permit, why the fuck didnt you do your job?
-Oh, we are missing 2 nuts to bolt the filler neck to the mounting plate....

WTF? Its held in there with 1 nut now, its fine, i have the other 2 nuts at home, they arent anything fancy, im sure you had something that would have worked...

-No no no, we cant do the recall job until all the parts are here.

This is absolutely rediculous, then the service manager goes on saying the car is too rusty underneath, I cant use our regular lifts, and where the mounting plate goes its too rust to attach it, so you going to have to leave the car here for 2 days to get this work done.. And I had to call honda headquarters to figure out how to deal with this... And what are you even going to do with this car anyways?

This pissed me off even more, yes its rusty underneath, but I have no problem jacking it up.
And bullshit its too rusty to mount that plate, cut out the old shit metal and put in the new one.
And I know why you called headquarters, because honda is only going to pay you 0.8 hour to do the job, and you realize it will take longer, and your pissed off because you are going to lose money? Well fuck you buddy, I dont give a shit, I already offered day 1, you get the parts, and ill install them....
And what are you going to do with the car??? Im going to drive it obviously!!

IDIOTS....
and obviously a 3gee hater..

So now im waiting for the guy to find his 2 nuts to start+finish the job :madflip:

the fact that the service guy doesn't want to fix the car just proves he's nutless :D

mtaylor
10-27-2011, 12:06 PM
The bullshit from the service manager, Wayne, continues....

I called him today, asked him if he found his nuts!
He said they have some of the parts, and the rest of the parts will come next week, he thinks Wednesday. Well thats 8/10 days for my permit, and he says its a 2 day job.
I asked for an appointment for thursday, he wouldnt until all the parts are here.... Im convinced this asshole is waiting for my temp permit to expire so he doesnt have to do the job...

Apparently there are more parts he needs: rust inhibitor spray, and seatbelt parts...
Fuck you, my seatbelts are fine, do that part of the recal another day, I am only concerned about the fuel filler neck, replace that now. And do the seatbelts another time if you insist!

Nope, he cant do that.... FUCKING COCK SUCKER

Big update:

Before bringing the car back to honda I did some patching underneath it and straightened out the jacking points. And then slopped roofing tar all along the pinchweld. Did a great job sealed off all that rusty mess.

Brought it to honda and they did the job in 1 day. I was actually quite impressed all the pipes are brand new and they didnt half-ass it. The mount plate was nicely siliconed too. They also replaced the front seatbelt sockets, they work very nice.

Brought the car to the garage for the safety inspect. Needed to replace 4 bulbs, the side indicator/turn signal. And change the tires, luckily I got an extra set with the car.

Should have it done tomorrow!
Pics soon.

Bought some used rims to put my new-ish all season tires on to. I wanted to leave the winter tires on the steel rims. And $50 for these alloy ones seemed like a good price. The tires on two of em are still good (Yokohama S707).

What year / model would these have come from?

Lol you've got a new filler pipe with a valve in it!
It's not stock, at least not in Europe. I ordered one from the US (ebay) about a year ago and it was also without that valve...
The Honda dealer couldn't get a filler pipe at all anymore.

BTW, they did a good job on the filler pipe, but why didn't they fix the rust from behind? I'd fix that as well.

Another funny story, I got a call from the honda dealership the other day. They obviously added me to the 'please bother me list' after doing the recall job. Anyways they were trying to offer me a deal on a new honda and to trade in mine... LOL I asked her, do you even know what car I have?? I tried to figure out how much she was going to offer, I told her I only paid 225 for it! But she insisted on me coming in so they could appraise it. lol, the same dealership that was so annoyed that I brought it in for repairs in the first place
