Question: The metal breather tube circled and dotted in the pic gets extremely hot. This is a mystery to me because all it does is vent crankcase fumes from the valve cover as part of the pvc system.
It gets so hot it has become discolored, and also you can't even think about touching it. Everything else around it does not seem to be as hot.

Could it be the EGR valve malfunctioning which is right close below it? Any thoughts?

This has annoyed me ever since I got this car...

Well aren't the breather and the coolant steel lines tacked together,so maybe the heat from the coolant line tranfer to the breather line.Just a thought.

They are tacked together. Here is a pic of one I had laying around.

Reason why you think it gets hot cause the intake manifold coolant line is connected to the pcv. So you have to consider coolant gets not there for pcv tube gets hot. Won't hurt nothing it's just a nagitive pressure for the pcv valve. You can't disconnect it an reroute it like I did. It's all taste in what you want.

thats it, I see the cooling line in there now geez.. thanks guys

Ok what vac line number is for the EGR, all the manuals seem to not show that. I don't have shopkey5 anymore right now so I can't look it up.

NO

I had subscription for online but it expired. I have several years worth of discs up to 2008 but lost the computer that had the key. I think Mitchell and Snap on scan the net for any sign of hacking because I can't find any tricks to get them to work again. My SO rep told me yesterday I should make sure to tell customer service were a school and they may be willing to help.

The engine pic was borrowed courtesy of conveneinze btw

I removed that tacked together tubing. Directly ran hoses from intake to breather nipple. Coolant tube finally rusted through and had a pin hole blowing water. Won't hurt nothing to directly run hoses and remove the metal tubes.

thanks Rendon
I happend to find one of those in a search for images, go figure lol

I enjoyed identifix for a few months free that came with a genisys, I never did get to really explore it a bunch. The main thing I use shopkey for is wiring diagrams and tsb. I wonder which subscription would cover the most since they all cost so much to justify.

Maybe too late, but the vacuum line in my '86 has the number 16 printed on it. I bet hose #24 takes the vacuum from the intake to the vacuum modulator inside the dreadful black box - that modulator feeds the vacuum to the EGR valve when the solenoid closes.
