BA B16... a plate on a car that many have come to love and hate. This car as been so many things to me. My everyday college commuter, my pizza delivery car, my broken car, my most reliable car, my winning car, my losing car... but lately i think the phrase that i think describes its current condition would be, my neglected car...
Owning 3 and maintaining 4 cars is a hard task to say the least. A 500hp del sol, a dual weber et2 powered prelude, a b16 swapped prelude, and an accord that has a storied history on 3geez. Lucky for me i have at least 2 cars running at all times...
About 2 montys ago, i finally negotiated a trade that got me out of financial responsiblity of owning (but not maintaining) a 500 hp civic, but recently the del sol has broke once again. I fired up the white prelude and handed the keys to the girlfriend to drive, once again the white prelude has again saved the dussex family from dependence on local city transportation. It was at this moment that i was thankful once again to have the car. This time "reliable" was the word that came to kind, quickly followed by "neglected". The smell of fuel leaking from the return line, the bobble of the passenger headlight, the crisp cool air reminding me of the poor and limited heat in the car, the sound of the transmission clanking around... the list addes up.
Again, we are thankful to have such a good honda. Now is time we give back to the prelude after all the years of reliable service. Time to make it feel a little better. Time to work on its little issues and quirks. Put all the pieces back into the car. The try and get it back to the car that was fun to drive... this is the year for me to pay it forward to a car that has been in the fleet, thats seen cars come and go from my garage... ive owned now 11 hondas, and this was my 3rd honda... time to make it feel like number one without breakimg me or comprimising its reliability.

BA B16 will once again terrorize the streets, with new shoes, a familiar stance and of course new oil!

The prelude look great! First time I've seen a rotor fail like that!

hondalude86
01-25-2012, 09:30 PM
Thanks guys, the prelude has definitely seen better days. As far as the rotor goes, its the onky time ive ever seen anything like that before... had it fixed and running back out on the course in less than 30mins.

As far as plans go, i want to keep it basic, with the small chance that it may get painted this summer...

Possibly new wheels/tires combo...
New trans, my current trans has a busted case and no 3rd gear...
Another suspension again... currently running on some blown koni yellows and some shitty intrax springs.
New exhaust, im tired of the ricey civic sound, and with my welder i can finally make a quality sounding/looking exhaust for resonably cheap.
Reinstall my interior FULLY! I may even have to inlist some help on pulling some parts from around on this thing...the rear interior with the exception on the seats all jeeds to go back IN the red prelude.
Basic, decent stereo, nothing fancy, just some tunage again...
Repace my blue door handle with a white one again... maybe even try and find a whole white door to replace mine...
Get some new rear tailights and possibly upgrade my headlights... mountain drivung with these lights suck! That means new bezels, some autopals, and some HIDs if its in the budget...
Just fix, or replace as much little bullshit as possible. I want to get this thing feeling good again and more fun to drive...

At this point im open to all suggestions... i kept the details pretty vague because, frankly i dont have any!

I love the 949s and have wanted a set forever... but im not sure they will fit without rubbing the inside to much. I need to mic my current wheel set up, but worst comes to worst, i can us a 5mm spacer on the front. Would definitley have enough space for that... they would fit perfectly in the wheel wells too! Maybe even look a tick bit conservative even. They arent cheap (@155bucks pr wheel) and you have to pre order now for builds shipped out in may...fwew crazy. Might be able to get used, but the used ones are as much as the new ones, not cool!

I think the diamonds would look the best with the older car, however, as much as i love these wheels, its starting to become over played in the honda scene. This company started out making wheels for late model circle track stuff, and now when you google search them its mostly civics. Not to mention that the price for a set has nearly doubled and the rumor is a 9 month wait from diamond... ive seen 15x8s used for 400 bucks when before you could get them new for 280 bucks!

Big fan of the Star Specs. I like them a little better than the RE-11s I used to have. Also, cheaper.

And what the heck was up with that snow? It only snowed in one direction or something? Or was it super windy? That's so strange looking!

hondalude86
02-03-2012, 02:24 PM
hahaha, yea it gets pretty windy here, hahaha. But seriously it snowed 8"inches here over night, and is still snowing, we are expecting at least another 4-6 inches... To get this much snow in the Denver Metro area is uncommon, but it does happen every now and then.

Gotta love tax returns!
Update... going to stick with my tr motorsport wheels for the time being... im hoping to pick up some gently used max summer performance tires or get some new dunlop star specs.

Also currently talking to mark with gaz about the suspension setup... going to keep it basic but hopefully with shorter springs or no springs at all and just buy my own... probably make some Semi legit top hats depending on how it all works out! I love the idea of it well with the stock top hats, but i want to make sure i can go low without killing the shocks in the process.

As far as main parts go, that will leave me looking for a new trans... im thinking im going to just try and get a good ys1 (with the taller fd) which is what i have currently... cars plenty quick at the moment and with the trans, gets hella good gas mileage.

does this mean your going to fix up the front bumper! lol!

Man that is going to be so low it's not funny mines pretty much maxed out as low as I dare go on the road any lower at the front I'll struggle to get over dips in the road!!

hondalude86
02-07-2012, 07:38 PM
I got the email from Mark today...

getting the newer rear piston design (ensuring the bushings will work) and 1inch shorter springs in the 500front/600rear spring setup. I've sent all my mailing, contact info... Just waiting for the final invoice and making the paymet!

As far as the lowness... I might not go lower than my previous setup rich, i just want to be sure that I can go lower if i decide to later... but i'll most likely go as low as i can provided i still have clearance for the drive shafts through the frame rails... I don't want to have to do silly modifications to dump this beast! But I do what the 15x8s to look good! I'll post up an update for everyone once the Babies are paid for!

Tomisimo
02-08-2012, 02:32 PM
Now yes, its a rare site indeed, even to see a 4dr on the road. but last summer I was on a freeway and seen a factory clean 2geen lude driven by a elderly guy. If you search european honda foruns, you'll find more of them than Aerodecks even.

hondalude86
02-08-2012, 05:56 PM

Tomisimo
02-08-2012, 06:08 PM
maybe I've seen lots of them, IDK, its like Golg II, there is nothing out there that hasnt been done to them. Every meet I attend I see endles civics and preludes. They are hard to stand out with IMO. But yes, I agree, they getting rare now so there is nothing wrong with restoring an old car. Actually I never ment to start a discusion, I respect the efford you poring in to the neglected car as many of us here.

hondalude86
02-08-2012, 07:41 PM
Hey man, no big deal... Its just weird that you said that, and just now i was creeping on the other "prelude" site and saw YET another DOHC prelude from europe! The damn thing looked mint as too!

-No matter what I'm super excited... And as far as tires go, 16 inch tires cost more, and the options are far fewer... With the SCCA racing here in the states and with how competitive the miatas and civics are in the street tire classes (all or most running 15s) there are tons of top notch times on the 15inch platform. Bridgestone RE-11s*, Dunlop Z1 Star Specs*, Kuhmo XS, Toyo R1Rs, Nitto NT-03, & the Hankook RS3s* are all awesome tires that were literally created to compete in the Street touring classes...

* (denotes tires I've owned or the previous variation)

See, the sun shines from another side here, if I had a Accord coupe here it would be a rare and uniq car on a meet.

Toyo and Fulda are soft gripy tires ;) M3 never slipped with Toyos on a tight track this summer compared to Yokohama the day before. and on the and of their lives.

That's weird. The 3g sedans are EVERYWHERE in the US. The coupes not so much, but still a good number of them. The 2g Prelude however is far more rare, especially in good condition.

Maybe we need to load up some 3g Accords and send the to EU for some 2g Preludes.

So after a long debate, im going to get these konig wheels in bronze... the price is right and the sizing is perfect. 15x8 with a 25mm offsethttp://www.good-win-racing.com/miata/images/items/Konig_Flat_Out_15x8_Bronze.jpg.
Price about 100 per wheel shipped... and weighs 12.8lbs and we'll be wrapped in some dunlop star specs

Tomisimo
02-11-2012, 06:49 AM
Neat, good choise, but eta25, can make some issues in the back. I think the maximus is 30mm. I tryed some wheels from E30 with offset that was 22mm in the rear and 25 front, front was perfect. 2mm.poke do change the cars stance. it looks so planted and even wider, but they rubbed all the way in the rear. will be needing to role the lip inside and maybe even push wheel arches out abit. Do it once, do it right.

hondalude86

Drove the white lude to my dads house to swap out to the red lude... let me just say this, I can not wait to get this car feeling better. With the broken trans the poor trans is literally knocking around in there... I cant wait to get this thing going again! The power in this car still feels great, and will be way better when I can lay the hammer back down on it. Also the suspension that is currently on the car drives me CRAZY! It literally is so fucked that having the new suspension on it is going to be amazing...

My wheels are slated to be here on tuesday so hopefully i'll be able to get the tires mounted and the wheels balanced before the weekend. I'm pretty excited! Its going to be alot of wheel!

Just a little stretch... I don't care what anyone is going to say, but this 8inch wheel fits this tire perfectly!

btw, NO these aren't really Volk CE28Ns, just damn good copies... Yes the wheels really do weigh 12.4lbs per wheel and if you have really good peepers... Yes those are 949 racing valve stems!

It is coming my friend... Damn near countdown almost! after seeing benny's car, it seems i'll be able to go as low as i need without making crazy top hats... I did have some rubbing in the left rear... but not to bad... Rears are already rolled... Fronts aren't but we've got big fenders and plenty of camber to keep those little guys going good. Soon, i'll need to make a trip to NE... Jared?

Have you got poly bushes installed right?I found some plates for the rear camber from Demon Tweeks in UK I think we could mod them to fit out car to create extra negative camber on the back, may need to make up a little sleeve or something but I'm sure it could work!!

Interesting. Lately ive been thinking of ways to mod the rear top hat. Im thinking cutting the bottom piece off the the rear top hat. Sliding it inwards as much as the shocks piston would allow. Then weld it back together. Use a normal poly bushing in the bottom and making a modded offset bushing out of poly or derilin. I dont know how much camber that would give us, but i think it might be worth a try.

hondalude86
03-08-2012, 06:14 PM
Well the day has come! The coilovers have now arrived! Here is the quick run down on the included objects and my stats that I can best figure for anyone else who is looking at this whole setup.
First the basics...

I got the standard setup with the modified rear pistons (which i think will be on all new ones thanks to feed back from rich)
7inch long, 2.25 diameter 500lbs springs for the front
8inch long, 2.25 diameter 600bs springs in the rear
2x tender springs and spacers (did anyone get these too?)
Spring locators
Nylock nuts

Here are some basic measurements that I believe are super important...
*all measurements are taken from the lower mount surface to the top of the body
Fronts
-Length 7.5inches
-Travel 3.75inches

Rear
-length 12.625inches
-Travel 5.5inches

So far, i haven't gotten to measure the factory peices outside of my basic "measuring on the car" figures puts the front shocks only 1/2 inch shorter than factory but with. 75 inches of more travel (this one will def need a closer look with a shock off the car which i have a ton at my garage thats only 15mins away) The rears however are substantially shorter... Roughly 2 inches shorter!!! It has 5.5 inches of travel which is about 1/2 inch more than stock. This basically means that going lower than my previous setup means no need for rear top hats but more than likely need for some modded fronts. If it turns out that the fronts end up a full inch shorter than the stock ones, then I don't think we'd need any top hats... Or least bigger than 1inch.

On my koni setup (shock bodies actually 1" longer than the stock) you have 3 inches of compression. On a sport setup 1 inch of shock travel is acceptable, but hard for daily driving with bumps and such. Now you figure my red prelude is about 4inches lower than stock. Ok guys, follow me here it gets really confusing. The most I could lower my car with FACTORY top hats is 2 inches with the konis. This literally puts you at the bottom of the shock with NO compression travel. Your shocks would last about 10 mins of driving like this (if that). So to go 4 inches lower than stock, I needed AT LEAST 2 inch top hats! With just 2 inches, this still leaves me with NO travel. Ok, now lets step it up to 3inch top hats. Sweet! Now we've got 1inch of travel. But wait, the shock is hitting the old lower bushing holder (cut this baby off) Now we've got a TRUE 1"inch of travel! Getting there, now lets lower the shock down in the lower fork. This gives you about 3/4 or an inch more travel but requires you use a smaller bolt (I didn't do this) or grab a file and file down a new pass through for the bolt. Now we have 1 3/4 of inch of travel! Perfect! Now if your doing this at home, you really only need 2.5inch carriage bolts to acheive this much travel and it gives you enough room for the nuts to hold everything together. Now as far as the rears go, if you lower the rear 4 inches, you still have 1 inch of shock travel, which isn't quite enough for daily driving, but almost enough for a performance application. At this level, I wouldn't worry about trying to lower to avoid having to make extentended top hats. If you do, you will have a hard time working in there becuase it is super TIGHT up there! Btw, this is a no bump stop zone past 3inches of lowering in the rear...

Now lets change gears here... If these coilover bodies are an 1" shorter then this is the new scenerio...
First you've got 3 inches of travel (the fact that these extend more than 3 inches doesn't effect this situation), now if you lower the car 3 inches, you have 1 inch of shock travel... If you lower it 4 inches than stock you have NO shock travel... Hmmm Sounds like I'll need to make some extended top hats for this bitch, FUCK. I'm really thinking lowering it more than 4 inches though is going to start causing some clearance issues with the cv axels and the "upper" control arms... With the rears being the length shorter i think it is, gives me 3 inches of shock travel at 4 inches lower than stock!

Any questions?

Oh yea pictures...

unfortunately its going to be a couple of weeks before i know. right now i have the trans out and waiting to install my new trans for it. I've got to take mine apart and add the necessary pieces to this new one i got for cheap. Hopefully out of the two transmissions I'll have 1 good one! the new trans has a questionable differential. but hey for 130 bucks, what do you expect.

i'm also going to try and make front extended top hats as well as make an offset bushing setup for the rear for a smidge more camber...

You need more heat. :flash: Try more voltage first and then more wire speed.

That's getting crazy low. No more speed bumps for you.

Thanks guys, ive got more pics to put up tonight!
At that ride height (21.5") i was hitting the upper control arms on the body. Ive raised everything up now to 22 3/8 inch and now no hitting. I originally modded the shock body slide down in the pinch fork buy to get it up my preload was to high, and the car was still bouncy, so i slide the shock up in tge pinch fork, and lowered the perches down, and now it finally feels decent. I personalkoni think the knoi valving is superior, but for the price its hard to beat.

So as a mear few of you might know, I just bought a car about 2 months ago with a b16b in it... which is pretty much the rarest motor to ever be built by Honda... I'm recently going through some poor relationship moments right now, so i've been toying around with the idea of swapping the b16b and the internals of the s4c (read, LSD w/ dual syncros) into the white prelude, whilst swapping my b16a and stock YS1 gear set into the civic I have. Before this, i toy'd around with the idea of doing a JRSC on the obd0 b16a in the lude... which would be quicker, weird, rare, but no b16b... Of course i'd sell the civic... Debate!

Debate!

Hmm, IDK. A SC would be cool and different, plus lots of low end torque. I'm not a fan of revving to 4000RPm just to get in the power band. Not on a street car anyway.

Welp, the situation got weirder... instead of getting to keep the accord, I have to keep the del sol. Problem with the del slo is that 500hp turbo honda is shit for reliability. I could swap the b16b into the slow, swap the gsr motor into the civic and sell the civic, then jrsc the lude, running neptune (from the slo) and rc440 injectors (also from the slo)... then literally wait for the slo to get stolen...

Raised the lude to day, and did what I will now call my final suspension adjustments before the badly needed alignment...

I raised it up just enough in the front to get about 1/4 of preload on the front springs and matched the rear to that... ended up about 1/2" taller than previously... Also readjuted the camber and took a little bit out... Of course not OMFG quality pics, but pics to give you an idea of where its at...

no more stupid camber and best of all, NO MORE RUBBING!!!
I can finally drive the car hard and put it through its paces. My initial impression is MUCH BETTER! the car is feeling pretty good now... No longer will i hesitate to toss this baby into a wicked turn! Car is feeling good, and I actually believe I've struck a good balance of low and performance... I'll get the two cars side by side to show you still how low it is!

06-16-2012, 04:17 AM
As Dave Gran said being the lowest is not often the best!

Mine's not that low due to the stupid humps everywhere but you look like your just a smidge lower than me now so we probably very close to each other!! I have my front shocks wound up pretty much on the max and the rears are about 6-7 clicks i think gives it a nice balanced handling with a hint of oversteer on cold road tyres and quite a lot of oversteer in the wet but not unmanigable you just need to know it's there so it doesn't catch you out!! I love it best flipping mod I've done to this car bar the engine!! I can't believe I've been running such shit suspension for so long even though it was still good enough to leave pretty much most track cars for dead now it just annihilates them!! haha!!

rjudgey
06-16-2012, 04:18 AM
Actually given that my tyres are only 195/50/15 I'd say our heights are bang on the same now!! I really do need to steal your wheels and tyres my car would just be on another cornering world with decent rubber and wheels!! :0(

Hahaha rich, this whole proper suspension thing is what ive been trying to get you on for years. Silly talk of your jamex springs and such always had me shaking my head... im currently running two full turns off full stiff in the front and one click off full stiff in the rear. Car feels great and doesn't rub! I neex an alignment now but for the time being, the car feels leathal. You really do need to invest in some new tires buddy. The 140 tread wear tires feel great. You still rocking stock front, no rear sway bars on that car of yours?

rjudgey
06-17-2012, 01:33 PM
Yep sway bars still the same can't find anything stiffer and to be honest I can't see how they'd make any difference!! lol!! I have no body roll and grip seems to be pretty darn good front and rear I could put SI roll bars on I have a couple but I feel doesn't need it at the moment maybe better tyres would make it more a concern though. I'd love to put some Hankook RS3's on but haven't got any decent rims to put them on or spare cash to waste them on. Car is off the road for now as insurance and TAX expired and head is leaking oil badly through the seals so need to fix that first.

hondalude86
06-18-2012, 05:31 AM
Damn rich! You gotta stay in that thing! Im currently running the koni front and addco rear. Its like increasing your spring rates with out needing additional valving. I will say though so far my experience is that the grip is much higher on the white car than the red car atm. It's almost more related to the big rear sway on the red car coupled with the dx front sway. Its quite a biy easier to get off throttle oversteer with the red car. The white car has gobs of grip!

So last night I finally had an opportunity to shake down the White Prelude and the GAZ coilovers... And to be honest I am pretty damn pleased with the suspensions performance. No quips or complaints from the coilovers, consistent performance side to side, and of course loads and loads of grip. Very predictable and razor sharp performance. For the money, I don't think i could be happier. I'd put it right up there with MUST DO for anyone. It is quite literally the cheapest way to get an amazing performing suspensions right out of the box.

Been working on the cars lately and this is what I needed to do on the white prelude before I caused anymore damage to the poor thing...

The radiator has been leaking pretty badly lately and I've been holding off till it install the newer motor to install the my half rad, but with the cold winter coming, and a job that I cannot be late for, I figured on my time off, I'd make a list of stuff to do, and this is one of those things.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x319/hondalude86/2012-10-09_17-54-15_802.jpg
Bracket I made to support the radiator as well as add some support to my damaged lower radiator support, over built? yes! Also ran outta flat stock, and being I drove the car that I would need to get anymore parts, I figured I'd make the other one. so I put the one piece support onto the passenger side of the radiator where the hoses come...

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x319/hondalude86/2012-10-09_18-21-15_413.jpg
crappy cell phone pic of course, but here is the damaged from the previous owner, Some 10 years ago!!! It looks extra crappy because I stripped the paint from the area(s) i need to tack the new support to.

http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x319/hondalude86/2012-10-09_19-14-24_676.jpg
Installed! I still haven't put on the bumper yet (no issues really to why) and have yet to install the hood (will have to cut out a piece in the hood for clearance of the radiator)

So thats really all i've got to report on this car. Enjoy!

There were a few issues... Popped the passenger retractor and the damn retractor control module by messing up 2 wires... Thats right, 30+ wires and i messed 2 up, and that cost me hours of frustration and those two parts... All in all, and as much as it sucked, I am super pleased with how it turned out...

Nice work man, great improvement, the engine bay is looking clean. Really accentuates that giant shiny whales dick though!

On another note, what's the performance like with that small radiator? Do you think radiator efficiency will become an issue when you mount that inter cooler in front of it (and with the turbo/manifold/etc behind)? I'm looking forward to seeing that project take off.

hondalude86
10-23-2012, 11:02 AM
It's a 3 core radiator. I didn't really have any cooling issues with the Del sol. So I'm hoping it works as good with less power and the bumper opening is a little bit bigger on the lude vs the Del sol. Once I'm all moved in and rolling in my job I'll get cracking on this... I'm plenty exited
