View Full Version : MIGHT have figured why I could only go 90 MPH...

Maybe you remember my thread about topping out at 90, but it was a decent 90 (no miss or stall). Well, today I got to 95 with no problems and the tach was only at 4. The other day it was at 5. I might have been in D3 instead of D4!!! I usually check it (my D4 light is finicky on the dash), but that's my conclusion. Lower RPM's and no problems. Also, I only got about 22MPG on that lil roadie. WOuld being in the wrong gear decrease gas mileage??? I usually stroke 28 on the HWY. I spose it coulda been bad gas, but I always buy gas at the same place and have never had any problems with them at all. Do my symptons describe an out of gear situation??? :wtf:

D3 won't let you use 4th gear..

you have to rev D3 to 7,500 to go 125 mph, just don't though

jteuton
10-17-2002, 06:58 PM
third gear will give you worse gas mileage than fourth gear.....but it will also let you accelerate faster. I'd rather be in d3 than d4 around 90 mph cause you'd be in a better gearing situation and could pick up speed a whole lot faster well until redline and then it would be a smart idea to shift into fourth and finish pegging out the speedo......WARNING: please don't hit any small children or large objects while doing this

reving a 14 yr old car with no engine rebuild would mess up the engine more quickly. Be sides, after 5500 rpm, ur gaining nothing. But its only true, if ur bone stock.

I still thing try going down the hill.

dXsquared
10-18-2002, 03:53 PM
drive in D4 cuz it is better for gas mileage... and when u need to accel at 90... u floor it and the detent shifts down for you. so drive in d4 all the time... i was gonna ask bout this but i forgot...

:werd: .... just punch it and it will drop a gear... to test it you can slam it.. then once you feel the gear drop put it into d3 when you let off it wont do anything ... it'l just stay in d3 ... the only time that I drop it down manually is when I want it to stay in D3 even while I take my foot off the gas... that way it wont shift down automatically.....

if you would of put intake, catback piping and exhaust you would have done 115 easy....

Immeraufdemhund

i only have an intake in mine, and i can go 115 on a straight way. I have an 87 hatchback 5spd.

people something is really wrong with your cars.
my '86 accord with 272000 miles on it can run 120-130 easy. done it last night.

ive gotten mine to 135-140, no problem, before i had mods

10-21-2002, 06:57 PM
huh??? 140??? hmmm... take some pictures of that... not to be a jack ass or anything its just no one has ever been able to do that in our cars stock....

87AccordsterLx
10-21-2002, 06:58 PM
ohh... shit.. my bad... its most likely becasue of your se-i .. what engine type to you have in there???

1989se-i
10-21-2002, 07:09 PM
Are SE-i's really that much faster? I dunno what engine....... whatever was in it when i bought it.

shepherd79
10-21-2002, 07:43 PM
SE-i had A20A3 in them. 122hp. nothing much special about the engine.
but i am not sure it can get up to 140mph.

outta curiosity what size tires you runnin on the front? stock size on 14" alloys is 195 60 r14 smaller profile tires = higher speedo reading, also remember speedo's arent always acurate anyway if your bored some time set your speed at 60 and run a stopwatch between 2 mile markers on a highway should be 1 min between them with that you can determine your in accuracy. p.s. hope your runnin h rated tires or better at 140 hate to see another totaled sei tho it would be nice to have another armrest

Immeraufdemhund
10-22-2002, 07:28 AM
i culd have gone fast on my straight away but the straight part ended and that's were all the cops hang out, so i decided to back off. I can go faster i think i was only at 4k, maybe 4.5k. So i still had room to go.

1989se-i
10-22-2002, 10:24 AM
Im running the stock rims, the tires seem like they have a smaller profile. The tires were one of the cheapest i could find and brand new.

PS: my armrest isnt in that good of condition

87AccordsterLx
10-22-2002, 10:28 PM
hmm... if they are the cheapest then I wouldnt try those speed runs anymore.... dont want to kill youself there man... I have one month old kumho ecsta supra 712 tires that are ZR rated at 150mph + .... just dont run those speeds with tires that are like q, s, t, u, or even h speed rated... anything higher.... like v, w, y, z is cool....

here are the specs on my 712's

I don't know about you guys but my speedo only goes to 120

DarknessRS

I smell BS. I doubt that you got your stock SE-i to go 140. Most EFIs top out at 125-130 stock.

HostileJava: check again, your speedo should go up to 130....

my 87 accord lxi with 204,000 miles on it is fine. dont burn oil, yet. I redline the bitch all the time when i race and it hasn't blown, yet. ive gotten up to 115mph which scares me because I have some shitty tires that the wetbacks put on my car when they stole my other ones. I don't care what anyone says my car is tight.

I think you guys are Bullshitting....
there's no way our cars can hit 125 (200km/hr)
PISS OFF!
The R31 Skyline can only hit 187kpm, and that has 2 extra cylinders and 1 extra litre!

sanjay
11-04-2002, 03:34 AM
I estimate our cars could hit 160kpm tops, that's 100miles per hour

sanjay
11-04-2002, 03:34 AM
maybe 170,

anchovies
11-04-2002, 10:39 AM
The speedo goes to 130 mph.
Our cars should be able to go to 100+ probably 120mph, how long it takes to get to that speed is another story.

87AccordsterLx
11-04-2002, 11:22 AM
sanjay... if you're saying that our cars can only go about 100mpg stock then I'll agree that most would top out around 105ish.. but our cars with a few mods can easily do 130... Mine can... and I'll try to get some pics as soon as I can....

socal... I believe the 86-87's have taller gears then the 88-89's... im not sure if its the year or the carb/EFI that determines the gear hight but I believe the 86-87's have more potential for higher speeds.... not sure on that....

sanjay

i dunno, I still doubt whether you guys are actually reaching those speeds...

ok im going to try to get a hold of a camera. so i can take apic like the one above. however my car is no longer stock. it has a act stage 1, short ram intake. and 2.25 cat back. if anyone thinks that my car can reach that speed regardless with the mods i have. then i am not going to waste the time. becuz i said that my car USED TO REACH ThOSE SPEEDS. but now im up to 129. with the mods.

if a car goes 80MPH @ 3K rpms, then isnt it possible to at least do 160MPH? (without blowing up)

87AccordsterLx
11-06-2002, 11:18 PM
huh???? if you are saying that by having 3000rpms left after 3000rpms then you can double that speed then thats incorrect... Im sorry I dont get what your asking... after a certain amount of speed your rpms start to pan out and they dont gain anymore... sorry.. maybe if you clarify more we can try to answer you.... :)

Socal... how far are you from the 405??? Is that where you usualy go to max out??? Watch out man... all of those overpasses are a haven for cherry picking cops.... they'll tag team your ass if your not careful... one will sit at the top and radar and the other sits at the bottom of the on ramp waiting for the signal to merge on and nail someones ass... just be careful man... exibition of speed in cali = jail time.....

haha... nice one... those damn cops will do anything to fill their quota... well thats good that you got it droped... I got 2 of mine droped... How fast were you going? If you would have doubled the speed limit theres a good chance that you would have just gone in to the local jail house for the night....

I'm not sure about that gear ratio thing, but my 86 can very very easily reach 160kmh and it has way more to go, all stock

The car will continue to gain speed unitl the drag force is the same as the force at the wheels from the engine. It doesn't matter at what speed your car redlines in top gear if the car causes too much drag before it reaches that speed.

The car mags said an 89 LXi coupe could get to 120 mi/hr. If you're much different from that stock you should be wondering about your speedometer. Mine always reads 10% high. It might say 70, but a GPS in the car will say 63. Maybe yours is just as bad.

u said it man,

i'm just curious, if anyone knows, what methods there are for reducing drag force?

Windows up, A/C off, mirrors folded in, headlights down, lowered car, skinny tires, clean car with no dust, and sheet metal panels all under your car. Obvious there are some extreme methods in min. drag for top speed.

I have a magellen color track GPS... I never thought about using it to get top speed.
