Small gas leak...is it the fuel filter?

So I bought my 89 Accord lx-i about a week ago. It was leaking from the fuel injectors, among some other minor problems, and I replaced all 4. I love the 3rd generation accord though and it's really a sweet ride.

While the gas smell and heat did decrease substantially, every time I take her for a ride I hear a whistling noise when I put some gas on it and I open the hood and a faint gas smell is present. It goes away quickly compared to before the injector replacement.

I have no idea what else it could be. The injectors are dry when I touch em and I'm thinking fuel filter.

check your FPR hose for any leaks. when i put my injectors it squirted a lil bit of gas cause i didn't positioned it right with the bushing and was not sitting correctly, moved it and didn't smell like gas.

when you change something it's better to do everything at once.

Thanks. I just changed the o-rings and injectors so I'll take a look at the hose and fuel filter.

Is the whistling indicative of anything? It's always a certain spot on the gas paddle that the noise comes.

Just painted the rims and hubcaps so it's starting to look pretty nice.

Whistling imho leads to a vacuum leak. Did you check around the emission can in the back of the engine bay? Its for gas fumes etc that goes back to the tank. Its under the fuel filter. Thick lines. Do a search for Dr. Snooz manual it is a great factory service manual for our car. Welcome. Post up some pics after five posts.

Oh the whistling thing is a bad o ring, when you accel. you hear it. so replace the o ring and that will get rid of it but i dont think it has anything to do with it smelling like gas. so did you fix it yet?

Thanks guys. I did use 2 old o rings on the injectors after I lost em. The other 2 are new. Maybe I should replace em? They seem dry after a run around town

I'll check the Dr. Snooz for those vacuum lines.

Definitely replace those old orings. It's also possible you damaged an oring on install. Did you coat them with oil before putting them in? The gas will stain the area where it's leaking out over time, so if you've been driving awhile, you should see it. Also, sometimes you have to twist the injectors in their sockets to get them to seat properly after you've installed the fuel rail.

Thanks for the reply snooz. Unfortunately with work and all I havent got to doing the rings but the injectors are pretty dry when I feel around there.

I did twist and make sure they were seated properly. I dunked the rings in a little gasoline to make em expand and seal.

I'll let everyone know how she comes along. In the mean time, those pictures I promised :)

So I checked the injector that was leaking and the O-ring was sheared to pieces! Replaced it and she's running great now :)

Unfortunately I screwed up on the hub caps and have to sand em down and repaint em

As far as I'm concerned my problems solved so thanks for the input everyone :cheers:

I would replace the o-ring first and make sure it seats properly.

I would not throw again a fuel injector that may otherwise not leak. Fuel injectors may be serviced, checking for leaks on a bench, plus checking spray patterns flow. There are several services on the internet; I tried this one

Car runs better and smoother after being serviced. If you do not know history of the car, but want to keep it I would suggest get those injectors serviced unless damage forces you to replace them.

thanks for the help ecogabriel, I might try getting the gaskets and seals for them first, whats the best way to get that damn fuel line bolt off though ? That things on there pretty tight !

I have changed the seals and remove the injectors without removing the fuel bolt from the fuel rail. I had to loosen the speedometer cable bracket for the rail to lift without problem, but mine is an 86 and the intake manifold is different.

Notice that the cleaning shops send the injectors with new seals, seats, and even the small basket caps on top.

Still, if you want to remove it, I would say get a six-point socket and try loosening it that way.
