Figured since all I do is troll this forum, I would share a little mod I did for the factory EQ.

So I was searching around ebay a while back and found a guy selling a factory EQ for a 3gee for real cheap. I figured what the hell, I can't pass this up and started looking up ways to modify it to work with my setup.

These are the pictures from the AD. Basically the guy bought it and never did anything with it so it sat in his garage. Still had all of the mounting hardware in the packaging.

I searched around here and found a few threads listing the color codes and pin outs for the harness and stock radio. All of my wires were completely different that the ones I've found so I had to figure it out the old fashioned way. It looks like this was designed for the Bose setup and looked like it could only control 2 channels at once.

In my rear deck I have a set of Kicker DS693 6x9s powered by an amp, and a set of Kicker DS60 6.5s up front powered by the head unit. The rears don't sound all that bad tuning it from the head unit but I wanted more control since they do produce a lot of sound. I figured since I had the rears on their own power source all it needed was a signal, and a cheap RCA cable can be easily modified to accept the high output of the head unit to run that signal. The wires in the harness for the EQ had two sets of wires paired together in red and white insulation with a ground for each. I figured one set had to be input left/right/ground and the other output left/right/ground.

Following the location of the pins on the connector:
1. Yellow (12+ from switch)
2. White from red pair (EQ IN)
3. Red from red pair (EQ IN)
4. Ground from red pair (EQ IN Ground)
5. White from white pair (EQ OUT)
6. Red from white pair (EQ OUT)
7. Blue (Not sure, Didn't use. I assume it was the remote cut on for the factory amp)
8. Ground from white pair (EQ OUT GROUND)
9. (Main Ground)
*The grounds are the bare wire surrounding each pair.

Wired in the RCA connectors (I will take pictures of this later), modded the tape slot under the se-i cupholders (the spot was pointless to me) and that's it. I have total control over the rear speakers and if I need to make a slight adjustment or turn the bass down when I crank it, it is very simple.

I do plan to go back and tighten up the connections and redo the mount I made out of scrap plexiglass. But otherwise I am happy with it.

Sweet setup. Was looking it doing the samething. My 3G has the stock cd,tape and eq in but the cd player and tape deck are old and out in and out from time to time. Now I know it can be done.

I think, it's very nice! Would even be better with a black interior.

Got a perfect dark grey dash with push buttons sitting in the shop waiting to be cleaned up and thrown in. Never was a fan of the shit brown interior...But hey I can't complain, the car was free :D. Just had to rebuild everything. I am thinking about black carpet though.

What modifications were necessary for the equalizer to fit in the cubby?

Thanks guys. The EQ actually fits snug on both sides and right now it is touching the back of the cubby and that allows the door to shut. I just used a dremel and cut out the center part that used to hold the tapes and notched the back part to allow the plug to fit. The front part is held in by some scrap plexiglass I had laying around just cut to fit.

I'm off Wednesday so I'll snap some pictures then so you can see.
