View Full Version : 1988 Aerodeck

This is my 1988 Honda Aerodeck EXi. A20A4 motor in it, it's very clean and tidy with only a couple of spots of rust on the body work, but otherwise it's mint condition. Owned it less than 24 hours, and I've already started playing with it. Got some nice speakers in the rear, waiting for the speakers to arrive to go in the front, got my stereo in, and I've done a short ram air intake as the original intake is about 4 foot long!

Cheers. Doing a bit of work to it here n there. I spent most the day repairing the belt feeder as the cable had snapped. Took me half hour to find the bloody cable, and then when I started repairing it, it wasn't working as it had all stretched to a point where there was not enough tension in it to work. So I have made my own system for it to work, a lot shorter system and a lot more straight forwards too. I just have it running down the side, under the trunk release section, none of this curling and flapping about nonsense!

Disadvantage is that it only works properly with the seat in one position. Advantage is, it's my car, so the seat is always in my position so it works! :D

What's the story on that shift knob?

Crazy_C
04-18-2012, 04:56 AM
It was from my first car and has been in every car since. This car doesn't suit it as a shift knob but I'll find some use for it.

As with all Hondas, the horn is a bit weedy, so I thought I'd uprate it with a bit more power!

Nice and clean, the way I like an aerodeck!............... Is that a Monterey green aerodeck!?!?!?! :O

Crazy_C
04-19-2012, 12:45 PM
Well I've played with the horn a bit, relocated it and still running the factory horns so it's very loud now with the little beep from the Honda horns when I tap it n a full blast from the air horn when I hold it down. I've also set it up so it's only running one trumpet now too, and I'm going to get a second compressor for it as well so it's even louder!!

Yes, it is Monterey Green. I was thinking of respraying it all gloss black but I dunno now. I might do in time. Will probably leave it the green but paint the roof black to match in with the sunroof n tailgate top when I get the windows tinted.

New component speakers are in the front doors. Got one done today, going to get the other side done tomorrow. JBL 508C's. From what I can hear from the one side that's done, they sound awesome!!

Nice! You are putting your plans into action fast.
If it already sounds awesome with only one side done....

Whats the button behind you antenna button? Heated seats?

Crazy_C
04-20-2012, 11:11 AM
Oh yea, I don't hang around. Should be getting the new wheels in the next couple of days too :D

The button behind the antenna switch is the headlight washer system. The wipers have been removed for whatever reason (or I haven't found it yet!) but the washer is still there.

I don't believe these cars had wipers - just the high pressure sprayer.

Crazy_C
04-20-2012, 02:46 PM
Yea, they had wipers, and contrary to popular belief, could have front fog lights too (which I am trying to get too)

This is the Honda parts reference for the headlamp washer / wiper system

Speakers are now in the passenger door too, so it's all good. Got sounds all round now! Woop!!

Just a shame that my stereo doesn't work for the radio, what with it being from the states, it only works on odd frequencies but I rarely listen to the radio anyways so that doesn't bother me really.

Crazy_C

I did check, and it was available on the 3Gs here with the pop up lights, but it may have just been a UK / European option due to weather and the probability of getting road grime on the lights in the winter.

Got some footwell illumination going on now. It's wired into the door open sensor, so that when the passenger door opens, the passenger footwell illuminates, and the same applies to the driver's side (when I do that side that is!)

I put a pair of horns like that on my last car in the 80's. As I recall, without an air tank there was a delay of about one second between pressing the horn button and actually hearing the horn. Do you get that as well?

That reminds me that my last car (1972 Pontiac Catalina) and the 89 Accord BOTH had little horn buttons at the end of the steering wheel spokes. So, I've never driven a car very long that had a big center horn button. I guess, in Texas, that's probably a good thing because they "don't take kindly" to use of the horn, period.

Crazy_C
04-25-2012, 03:45 PM
Yep, I have that delay. It sucks, but you get used to it. That's why I still kept the factory horns connected, so there's no delay on them, and then when I hold it down, after a second, the air horn comes in for a full on blast!

Most Hondas here have the little horn buttons on the spokes, but this one for whatever reason has a massive one, unlike the other Hondas in Europe from the same time span.

I live in London, and that's why I upgraded my horns, because, well, lets just say that I have actually worn a horn out before living here!!

I've dropped it down to one horn now though, as the same amount of air was going through 2 horns, so they weren't as loud as having all that air going through one horn :) Next plan is to get a second compressor and then run it as 2 compressors, one horn, which should make it nice and loud!

Been playing again today, and got some bass in there now! 12" JBL power series sub and a JBL GTO 1004 amp bridged to 3 channels to power the sub and the components up front.

Got the drivers side footwell illumination done today too. The latch which senses if the drivers door is open had weakened so wasn't earthing properly, so a quick disassemble, spring stretch, and reassemble was in order and sorted it all out nicely :D

Cheers. Yea, the wheels definitely suit it, but it looks like it's on stilts though, so definitely got to drop it soon. I might have a go at doing that on Monday, depending on how much is booked in at my mate's shop.

ShyBoy, I do love the footwell illumination, it just makes it a bit easier to get in and out as well, as you can see if there's any crap in the foot well.

The air horn delay is a bit annoying, but I don't mind it too bad.

I've had a play with Photoshop, and had a few ideas, and this is what I've come up with for next on the list of modifications - lowering it and refurbing the alloys to match the car.

As it sits now:

Yea, the rears are still captive. Kinda have to hold them in position whilst you drop the car off the jack so that they go where they're meant to, as I've cut 3 coils off of them. LOL

Really love what your doing to the Aero, but don't make the wheels green!
Black or anthracite would look good in my opinion.
Sub is looking clean, but not much space for a case of beer....
How did you smoke those lights?? Love it!!

Crazy_C

Cheers man. I smoked them with lens tiring spray. Just wipe them down and spray. I still need to t cut them to clear up the imperfections, but rain called off that today.

I am still undecided about the wheels. Eventually I will get a set of Rota RB 16" in anthracite with the polished lip, but not just yet as I have no money!

Cheers guys. Can't wait to get it even lower!! It's annoying how high up it sits at the moment, but whilst it's static, I can't go any lower really :(

Wish me luck for tomorrow though, as I'm probably going to see about making my own front and rear lip for it!! Got a bit of maintenance work to do on it too, as it seems to like overheating when it's sat idling in traffic for a while. I'm guessing it's a blocked rad as when it's running it's fine. We'll see though eh?

Crazy_C
05-26-2012, 02:04 PM
Who knows, maybe you'll be able to get one sooner than you think! Just gotta find one first though, that's the fun!!!!

Not done much today, stripped the headlamp washers out as I never use them as I always forget about them! LOL Now got a cleaner looking bumper, though there are 2 holes in it at the moment that have rubber grommets in them, but it works, and that's what counts.

I found the problem, or rather, problems with why the car was overheating too. One problem was that my stat was jammed shut, and the other was that the thermosensor wasn't reading properly, so the fan only kicked in when it was overheating massively!! I've currently removed the core out of the stat, so the water is just free flowing through the engine, and I've jumped the thermosensor too so the fans are on with the ignition, but I'll see about fitting a switch so I have control over the fan, as I do a lot of long drives, it's nice to be able to keep the engine a bit cooler by keeping the fan on longer :)

Oh, and I've been playing with some photoshop ideas too for the new paintjob. It'll be satin white primarily, but I was toying with the idea of maybe a gloss black roof and hood bulge, or maybe just a gloss black roof, or even all satin white. Personally, I'm thinking just the roof in gloss black at the moment.

A final photoshop idea, and this is how the car is going to go. Satin white and satin black 2 tone combination :D

Marvin's been feeling a bit down today due to the weather, and although he has a new drivers door mirror, there is quite a bit of rust behind the mirror, so that got him feeling a bit down too

http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/179704_10150883295489081_504404080_9922668_2078500 268_n.jpg

Basically what I did was relocated the fuses and switched them. I have 2 switches at the moment, one for each side, and I can stop the lights wherever I want :) I need to do the joint switch tomorrow as stopping each light on its own at the same level takes a bit of skill and a lot of luck.

With my system I can do depressed Marvin, drunk Marvin, fly in the eye Marvin and flirting (aka winking) Marvin.

I accidentally put ethanol in Marvin's tank and he got a bit drunk!!

The switch controls. The left two do the left and right lights respectively, the right switch controls my cooling fan (didn't have £25 for a new sensor so I just bypassed it, much better!!) The left light and the fan are both turned off, why those switches are the opposite direction to the middle (right light) switch.

And the wiring from the fuse box:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a148/bkcr1/00724a41.jpg

I know most of y'all will think that sleepy eyes don't look good on a 3G, but I did it for a few reasons, one being that car is named after Marvin, the paranoid android, and it looks even more like him with sleepy eyes. The other, as sad as it may be, is so that I can disable one of the lights and make the car "wink" at girls walking along LOL

you could even hide a few switches in there and put a faux cover on it lol or just throw the ol sunglasses in there.

Yea, the fuses are relocated behind the pocket. It is a brilliant spot for hiding switches :) I now have another switch in there for both the lights :)

Cheers, I really love the wheels :D Favorite part other than the pop up lights. Lol

I was thinking battleship grey and satin white but it just didn't look right on the photoshop so I kept darkening it till it went black. I can't wait to get the rust sorted and have it resprayed.

black on silver? I photo shopped some 2 toned aerodecks a while back, I'll try find the pics. aerodecks really suit 2 tone colors, and pull it off a lot better than sedans/hatches/coupes IMO

I want satin / matte paint as it'll hide any car park dents nicely otherwise I'd go for a gloss white. They definitely suit a 2 tone paint job for sure. As soon as I did that photoshop I knew it had to be done!

Cheers. It's great fun, and definitely gets noticed when you pull into a show or a meet :D

I started on fixing some of the rough parts on the 'deck, and thought I'd start with the bumpers. Fixed them up, and tried some paint that was kicking around the shop, and loved the look of it, so I painted both the bumpers.

Just got to fix the rust on the sides now and paint them the same colour, and repaint all the black plastic satin black to freshen it all up.

Getting there slowly and steadily :D

Well I've taken this week off work to do a top end rebuild on my Aerodeck with a stage 1 cam and an adjustable pulley (courtesy of Yasu) and it's running great. New head gasket, skimmed head, new cambelt, new tensioner and new manifold gaskets.

Painted the rocker cover too whilst it was off, same colour as the bumpers.

It's not much faster, just a bit faster, but the power comes on a lot smoother now and it pulls better at lower revs.

Cheers man :) I just painted the rocker cover with vht primer on there first.

I have found 2 problems though since doing the work, and 1 has now been rectified.

First was a mark appearing along the belt, as if it was being chewed away by something, but it turned out the rubber seal on the lower belt case had popped out and was rubbing on the belt, so the mark was rubber bring added to the belt! Lower cover removed so all is good now :)

The other problem though is that I have a bit of cam pulley wobble. Will need to take the cam pulley off just to ensure its true. It's only about an 1/8 inch wobble so not too bad but hoping that it may have just jumped on the seat, but I have a suspicion the pulley may be slightly warped. Will put the old one on next week when I get a chance just to check.

Good news though is my unimposing little old Aerodeck was embarrassing a few motors on the roads last night. The cam definitely makes a big difference. Still need to adjust the dizzy slightly too as although it runs great it has a tendency for the revs to drop so quick it stalls when I slow for the first speed hump on my road.

Please let me know when you compare with the old one.

Crazy_C

Will do man. Will make sure it's on properly and everything first. It's not much of a wobble but it's enough to double check. I'll probably get my trusty flat bit of steel and check that sits flush against the surface of the cam gear.

I will say though if anyone plans on doing a cambelt on an A20A, have fun with the bottom pulley bolt!!!!!

I had two Golden Eagle Camgears, one black and one blue which I sold it to you. I didn't have any problem with the black one at all so I am a bit surprised. I had blue one as a back up for the future so I didn't test it so I can't say. If it helps, I can send the black one to you for comparison. Unfortunately, with the black one, one of the fixing bolt was over torqued due to old torque wrench and the thread on the gear is stripped. :banghead:
It still worked ok for about one year without one bolt though.

Crazy_C
09-10-2012, 04:24 PM
It may just be something simple like it not being seated properly, will have a check on that when I can first.

Urgh, I hate it when torque wrenches do that :(

Well I've not really been doing much to the Aerodeck as I've been playing with the trike project more so recently, plus I've run out of smaller things to do to the 'deck, and next step is window tints and a restoration.

But I have decided to get a new sub for the install, and I doubt many, or any of the non-UK audiophiles will know it. It's a brand new Shadow Works Genesis sub :D These subs are the dog's danglies and are pretty hard to get a hold of too, seeing as the company went bust a few years back as they're all hand made by a guy up in Scotland. He still makes a few now and again, but not many.

I need to tidy up the carpet though, but I swapped the subs over before work today, so you'll have to forgive the mess.

Also trying to keep an eye out for a rear spoiler for the Aerodeck as well, to no avail :( I will get photos uploaded though as soon as the restoration starts. In the mean time, I have a photo of the latest goody, a genuine moulded rubber dash mat :D
