So since I have to pay for a subscription to make a build thread, I'll put my pics here for now. This is what I'm starting with. These are the pics straight from the for sale ad. I only paid $350 for this car and it runs GREAT! A good cleaning is in order first, and I think she'll look a lot better after a wash, wax and vacuum.

The poor car must have been stolen sometime in it's life. (Im looking for an ignition, glovebox and a stereo lol)

Welcome!

I see you found yourself someones work beater, poor hatch. I hope you will take better care of her.. I have a mint dash of that same colour I'd love to give to you but you're probably a bit far.

those look like plug wires from a D series, pm me and I'll send you some good slightly used nappa ones for shipping, I have a few extra sets of turn signal lights too

Is that a push button start setup that's next to where the ignition slot should be?

elarson88
04-22-2012, 09:48 PM
@87roach: yes I'm definitely going to take better care of her. I live in Alberta but I drive to Vancouver usually once a year. Who knows maybe I'll stop by one day to take that dash off your hands :)

@89hatchbacklxi: yes that's what it is :( some bastardized ignition system. I found out its cheap to get a key cut from Honda. But I still have to look into the cost / procedure to put a new ignition in.

Thats one dirty interior!

elarson88
04-23-2012, 06:51 PM
So today I washed her up, cleaned most of the interior and the engine, changed the air filter and the headlights. Tomorrow will hopefully be an oil change, spark plugs and wires. I think I got about 5 pounds of mud, grass, dust, pop/beer bottles, cigarettes etc out of it. Gross!

Bringing her home...

why are your wires mis matched?

ShyBoyCA6
04-23-2012, 09:40 PM
Send those Sealed beam headlights and spend an extra 20 for H4 conversion. these will be easier on your wallet.

elarson88
04-24-2012, 05:54 PM
The wires have since been replaced.
I did look at the h4 conversion but needed something quick so I can get it safetied and on the road. All the ones I found had a stupid looking blue led bulb in them. Are there some that just have the h4 bulbs? I'm going for nice not rice :)

Also: a little setback today. After changing the plugs and wires, I changed the oil, but the drain plug must have been stripped, because when it went back in it is leaking quite a bit now. What is the best way to fix this? I was thinking a heli-coil?

Another problem: after changing the plugs and wires, the car starts way quicker now, but will stutter and sometimes (rarely)stall when it is put into drive and the throttle is applied. I'm sure the plug gap is right. I used the same gap as is listed on the sticker under the hood. It's weird because it's fine in reverse, it only does this in drive. I'm thinking it might be the fuel filter. Thats what the Haynes manual says anyways??

87roach
04-24-2012, 06:34 PM
There's going to be two fuel filters to change, there is one in the engine bay near the wiper motor and then there is a larger one at the back behind the rear left tire(beside the gas tank). I would change both, glad to see you're getting it tuned up right quick!

Sweet thanks for the info. Does anyone else think the oil filter is in a really stupid place on our cars? I was barely able to jack it high enough to get my 6'4 tall self under there!

Its a pain in the ass for the carbed models but on the FI is alot easier.

Oh well I guess that's another reason to do the efi swap one day!
Here's some more pictures since this is the pics forum after all.
Its amazing what a little armorall can do. Removed the stickers and found 3 holes in my dash :( Its starting to smell better in there thanks to the air freshener though!

Theres some ugly rips in the door panels too :(

And 4 matching plug wires! Also found out that the dist. cap was only hanging on by one screw. Its a miracle the car even started before.

It's looking really clean now! Nice job on cleaning it up and bringing it back to life! How were you able to get that much crap out of the carpet?

I'll try to get your turn signals on the way today still looking for them, I have at least three sets here somewhere and I'm going to send that set of plug wires in case you need em

elarson88
04-25-2012, 06:37 AM
Thanks. I really don't need the plug wires anymore, but I suppose it can't hurt to have a spare set!

How were you able to get that much crap out of the carpet?

I have a huge shop vac at work. It's still pretty gross though. Someone spilled antifreeze all over the floor on the drivers rear side. I plan to take the carpet out completely one day and hose/shampoo it.

Wow, it's starting to look better already! Be careful with that armorall though... Stuff will end up drying out anything you put it on.

Those door panels and interior look very familiar haha, I had almost forgotten mine was like that before(well half of it still is..).

I found the turn signal, I'm sending the wires, and I found a wix filter, it's a 51334 and that comes up as fitting the three g, it has a slight dent in the top, but it shouldn't affect anything, better you have it then it rot in my garage. Oh I found a brand new fuel filter, the one that goes at the back. I don't have a factory fuel system,so worthless to me

I made a trip to the local pick-n-pull today. There are two 3g's there. a 88 EX Sedan with my interior color! and a 89 coupe. I got a glovebox, fuse box cover/change holder, steering column cover, cigarette lighter and one of the switch delete panels from the sedan. I took a passenger door latch, drivers front window gasket, "honda" and "accord" badges and knob for the side mirror from the coupe. All in all a very good day and only spent about $35!! Im going back there to rob the sedan of it's ignition (It's riveted in WTF!!), key and 2 door locks and trunk lock some time this week. Heres a pic of all the goodies sitting in the back of my Nissan.

it's not riveted, the screw heads are designed to break off, when you install the screws, why not just pull the entire column? you can take them out but it's tricky. all you have to do to remove the column,is disconnect the bolts under the dash, unplug it, then remove a couple of bolts from the U joint, if you don't know, pull the carpet back from the drivers side, and you'll see a panel in the floor, it has those half turn screws I think, take it loose and the U joints are in that hidden compartment INSIDE of the car, you'll probably have to take the column or lock to a locksmith anyway if it doesn't have a key, any good locksmith can make a key easy, or rekey it to fit your existing key

It does have a key! I took it so nobody else would get the idea to take the ignition/locks until I could come back. If I can't get the ignition off I'll do that and take the whole thing.

I Know!! I checked the inventory online before going and was amazed to see that they had 2! Both arrived on the lot this month nonetheless and mostly still complete! If you need any specific parts off them let me know and I'll see if I can hook you up. I'll be going back sometime this week.

When did you say you were going to buy it? I brought it home on the 21st, but was talking to him about it for a week before. Sounds like you really wanted it, being willing to transport all the way to Quebec and everything! It definitely was not stolen! But at $350 it might as well have been...

The guy did seem kinda flaky over email, but in person he was pretty cool. Uhaul screwed me when the trailer I was supposed to rent had a burnt out taillight and they wouldn't let me take it so he agreed to trailer it all the way to Edmonton (1.5 hours) for no extra charge. All he said to me was that he didn't know too much about the car and that it might need a timing belt etc. I guess it was his sister's or cousin's car or something? Bought from some place called "haul away scrap recycle" as a temporary car for a month or so until she could get another one?

I just hope everything on the bill of sale is legit for when I go to register it. I found the other bill of sale in the glovebox that didn't have this guy Brad's name on it but someone else??

Cool Thanks! Hopefully they will be racking up many more miles soon once they're on the car.

So I went back to the JY today and guess what...I got all the locks off, but I broke the ignition! I guess they're made of some cheap pot metal crap and it snapped in half while I was pulling it off. Pretty much a total waste of about 2 hours :chainsaw: I'm going to have to look for another complete set because I want all the keys/locks to match when I'm done. Other than that, Installed the new glovebox today along with the fuse panel, lighter, and mirror adjustment knob. Won't be doing much tomorrow as I need to take the wife into the dentist. Hopefully oil and filter again on Wednesday! I'm trying to get the mechanic next door to help me with my stripped oil drain but it's like pulling teeth. Their advice was to take the car to the scrapper because of an oil leak and needing a timing belt... It's hard to find anyone that cares about this car like I do. How hard is it to pull the oil pan? I wonder because I know there's two over at the pick n' pull.

you probably won't find a matching set, you are going to have to have the ignition rekeyed or use two keys, you can't just pull the ignition lock off, you have to use a center punch to punch a hole in the screw then tap it out with a pin punch to make it rotate better to grab the whole thing

So today, aside from my oil pressure problems, I got the door window gasket installed, put on the rear emblems and the new steering column cover. The junkyard one had a little light above the ignition, and my car doesn't have one. Also there was no hole for my cruise control switch, so some "modifications" were made with a drill  Pics to come...

when I get a chance to take pictures, you can make the light above the key switch work really easy, under the radio there's a box with a big electrical connector on it, you need to pull the plug from one of those at the yard and remove a pin from it, there is an empty slot in the plug on yours you add the pin too, it's a timed light, I can't remember if the pin goes ground or hot, I'll have to look it up,it's a cool feature thats really easy to add, why honda didn't run one wire on the dx.lx cars, I have no idea

It's been a while since I posted any pics of my car. It got a "free" flat black paintjob when it was stolen. It's not great, but better than peeling paint. It's rolling on some 14" steelies with center caps since the other tires got slashed. Freshly washed and lookin good! ...or ok anyways?

Yeah it was almost like being on pimp my ride haha. They painted it, put an exhaust tip on and put in a broken cd player lol. I don't know if it was stolen twice or what because its strange that someone would do all that and then slash all 4 tires?

Here's my new (old) stereo installed. Who actually listens to CDs these days?

The good thing is that you got it back.

elarson88
07-08-2012, 09:42 PM
Well the car is "mobile" as in it's insured, registered, runs, drives, and stops. It still needs an engine eventually as the oil pressure is low and it's knocking a bit. I'm going to take a look at the fsm when I get a chance and see if I think can change it myself. Having some help sure would be nice, but not many members around here. I will probably just drive on this engine until it blows anyways and then use it as a boat anchor or something :-p Theres one 3G at the local pick n pull with only like 45000 km on it that would make a perfect engine candidate. The only problem is you don't know if the thing runs until you get it home and installed...

And yes I am glad that I got it back! $300 in towing and impound fees sure hurt though!
