Welcome from California! The short answer to your alternator question is that there is no easy way to get it out. There are ways that don't require you to remove the drive axle, but they aren't exactly easy. I have an FI car and the alternator is much easier to remove on those so I can't really help you there.

In stock form I remember passing mine under the intake manifold and over to the passenger side. There are braces under the manifold that may or may not get in the way, but it's been a while since I've had my car in stock condition, I've pulled out quite a few things since then to make working on the car simpler.

Welcome from California!

Here is some info on how to remove alternators from carb'ed engines. Wear eye protection. Tools needed: 14mm socket and rachets to remove alternator. If the belt squeaks turn off the car and tighten the belt and try again.
