Help!! Auto transmission lost all gears out of nowhere!!

Today as I was driving my '89 Accord LXi, I came to a stop and when I went to accelerate and there was my Accord started rolling backwards! There were no signs of transmission problems before and had driven the car about 30 miles running errands with absolutely no problems. When I turn off the car and turn it back on the transmission will go into 1st gear, but go back into neutral in about a minute. I also lose the transmission if I stop or if I go up hill. I haven't ever heard of a transmission just randomly dying like that but Im sure its possible. Any ideas on what the cause could be??

I would first look to see if the TV (throttle valve) cable is moving. On the Lxi you should be able to see both ends, one up by the throttle cable and the other end under the battery area ON the transmission.
The cable is supposed to move as you give it throttle.
