As the tital states. What are you working on! It does not have to be 3g related, but it can be. What project(s) are you working on.
You could be restoring a part or a whole car. Tell us about it.

I'm doing a Full Restoration and Respray (louvers & Trim included) of my 89 Lxi Hatch. So far I've removed all the rust damage filled/fixed any dings and have primed the car. Got the car in april 2011 and at that point, I knew nothing about cars or body work. Since then I've taken 2 semesters of automotive refinishing at the local community college (since I'm already taking classes there) but anyways, I've learned a lot during the process, especially detailing. So, I'm hoping to have my hatch all finished by New Years. That's my goal at least.... Going through a bit of a delay at the moment however since I can't do any work on it (painting wise at least) until the fall when my autobody refinishing college class starts up again. I'll have put about $1,500 into it (body panels, materials, paint, etc included) when I finish with the restoration process. So far so good, and I'm hoping it stays that way.

well I was doing wiring in the hatch, but the car tore up in tifton today, so it cost me 150 bucks I couldn't afford to have the Lincoln towed home, now I need to drop the tank and change a fuel pump,on top of that my grass is 4 feet high and no matter how much I work on this mower the carb isn't getting fuel through the jets,

More like "buy a house, buy a second job."

I'm rebuilding a 1.6NA VW diesel to drop back into my rust bucket Sami'. The bottom end is mostly done, just need to get a rebuilt head, water pump, and oil pump.

The roof of my studio is exposed and the bathroom is just walls with some trim on top so I put up a ceiling above my bathroom. Since the studio roof is a fairly high "A" I use the space above the new bathroom ceiling as storage. In other words I built a 6'x8' deck on top of my bathroom, but The area directly above the shower is left uncovered so it can vent moisture. The deck frame is made from 2x4's and is supported by lag bolts into the existing ledger on one side, and the other side use the existing wall as support. I may be asked to take it down so everything is resting in place except for the lag bolts. I wanted it to be taken down easily and not be too damaging to the existing house, but who knows they may like it.
I finished hanging the drywall and got started on applying the thin layer of mud. I don't plan on doing any texture, though there is existing knock down texture to the walls. I'm looking for flush mount ceiling lights since the bathroom got a fair bit darker in some areas, but the low ceiling once painted white should reflect more light overall.

Eeew, texture. When I bought my house the living room/kitchen ceiling had popcorn texture, and it even had the sparklies in it. It looked bad so we painted plain white over it. I wanted to remove it but there's pretty much no way to do it without just making it look worse. All the walls have sand texture, which is not so bad. At least that stuff you can paint over a few times and it's mostly covered.

I'm also in the middle of redoing my bedroom. Walls are painted a light grey. Trim will be white. The floor will be engineered hardwood of the ash variety.

Need to figure out what to do for closet doors though. It had these cheap bi-folds with that awful plastic looking wood grain. I'll probably do bi-folds again but with real wood panel type doors, although I'm not crazy about those either. The design goal is a clean modern look. I could use some ideas here if anyone has any.

I've scraped the popcorn stuff off with a wide putty knife before. It seemed to do the trick. Just be aware that most of it has asbestos in it.

In keeping with my investment advice to anyone who will listen, I bought some property last year. It is in the hills away from populated areas. It was an REO (bank owned, following foreclosure) and I got it so cheap I should be prosecuted. It's absolutely beautiful with lots of big oaks and a small creek running through. There is a well, septic, electric and a run-down mobile home. The bank screwed up the foreclosure and didn't have proper title to the mobile, so I got the mobile for free after they discounted it out of the asking price.

Here are a few pics.

The planter boxes that it's taken me months to build and place. It's taken months more to fill them with dirt. I'm not even half-way done with that.

http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/dr_snooz/Property/IMG_0671.jpg

I've since put a sprinkler controller up on the hill to take care of watering the boxes. There is no power that far out, so I put in a solar panel, charge controller and inverter. It seems to do the trick very well.

I'm also trying to get a book published and have been working hard to get a blog started.

Just to contextualize this all, four years ago, I lived in the Bay Area and worked at a big Wall Street bank. I wore nice suits, lived in a nice apartment and drove a German car.

Now I live in a camper and worry about rattlesnakes. Life is an interesting journey.

Get a small sprayer and soak the popcorn ceiling. They sell 6 or 8 inch putty knifes with threads in the handle for a small broom handle extension. I've done hundreds of sq ft this way. Unless its a 80's or newer house it will have asbestos in it so don't be dumb wear a GOOD mask not one of those dust single strap white things. Those are your lungs your protecting.

I have many projects going at any time. Today was another turn at the koi pond. I changed the marginal ledge to better accept the depth of plant I wanted to place. This turned into a rework of the plumbing layout of the system. I've had the pond since 2007, its been through 5 major remodels and the fish still aren't too pissed at me. they range from 2ft butterfly to 18in standards. I have many brilliant beautiful species but I just like watching them eat. things turn into bloody piranha.

I have an air compressor I'm taking to my my buddy's tomorrow so I can rebuild the pump. I tore the motor down and it's good and clean. The pump had water in it at some point and has glazed cylinder bores. With a set of rings and a hone, it should be good to go.

Next project is getting my new-to-me Millermatic 130xp running again. I traded it for my old Lincoln flux box, but my friend is insisting that he replace any bad parts because I swapped him a working welder and I should get a working one in return. Being able to run gas will really help me with my Jeep's rust repair. Teh funnay there is that I'm using metal from my old 3geez shells to make the repairs. It's sell the whole shells to the junkyard for $12/100 or use the metal myself and scrap what's left. Why not let that metal live on as floors?

At some point, I'm getting that 89 coupe street legal. It's running now, but it needs tires, a fresh fuel pump sock (the current sock is rigid and is keeping the pump from seating all the way down), and a damned good shake down. After that, I'll have a running 3gee again.

OOO, I think I found another root cause for fender well rust. I'll post pics when I get a new camera, since I need a macro lens.

I know it can be removed. It's just that it's a huge PITA, and depending on how it it was applied you will have a crap ton of patching to do. At least now there are no sparklies so it's not so bad. Anyway it's too late now since it's already been painted.

The house was built in 1986 so no asbestos.

Working on beer #4 out of the 12 pack of Okanogan Springs 1516 the neighbor gave me for swapping the starter out of his van the other day (80's Chev. 2 bolts, 2 wires. 10 min of work), trying to get my printer to spit out the P2 visa forms I need for an upcomming show. Going to go drink more and heckel the magician and the techs working the show down at casinoland and call it a good roadie friday. Over the next couple days I am going to work on advancing some shows, finishing up the rebuild to the shop truck ramp, and learn all about the nifty new SWR and site analyizer meter we are getting at the shop in preparation for changing out 1400 or so communications radios.

I had thought of that, but the snow pack wasn't great this year and it's barely running now. I'm thinking of putting a few water tanks on the top of the hill and filling them from the creek or well and doing some rainwater harvesting so I can gravity feed the drip hoses for the garden. That's probably my best use of the creek. That and letting the frogs make their unholy racket in it. :)

Hey snooz that's a nice place you got there.

Thank you kindly!

Interesting. Regarding prosecution, what about prosecuting the banksters that caused the mess in the first place?

Probably not going to happen, which means that we'll all get a lot poorer and more desperate. At least until the revolution. Then it will get worse...

Which is why I'm in the hills now, hoping to be a long way down the road to self-sufficiency by the time that happens. I'm just hoping I can watch civilization burn from a safe distance and not be too impacted when it does.

Fat chance, I know, but I can dream.

No shopping today, my friend was tied up supervising some construction. Such an odd skillset this guy has, he's former EMS, has had a successful motorcycle racing career, has done well as an importer, and has made a ton of money in the stock market. I have a ton to learn from him.

We did, however, get the race car moving under its own power today. I don't have video of that, but I do have cell video of the car running. It's a shame the mic really didn't pick much up, but it's a very loud car. Not bad for under $2000.

As of now, I just finished the A/C system. Next step will be to get my idle working properly, pretty sure the FIT valve needs to be cleaned. I was careful not to bend the float wire and it is still bent, I know the mileage before it quit, and i reset the digital trip meter so i can calculate how far it's off, then I can bend the float wire and play with it until it's close. I also seem to have an issue with the flat four wire plug going into the hanger assembly, the pump quit earlier and i moved the plug and it started working, It's odd because I tested the old pump out of the car and it didn't run. Where the crap am I going to find another fuel pump hanger plug?

Note: do not store AC parts in a cooler, it may keep them out of the weather but they condensate so much after being in there a few years, everything is ruined. I had two almost new compressors fUbAr. at least I have the upfit Denso brackets for both my A and B engines.

Trying to get my car aligned, I don't want to "leave it" anywhere all day. It's got cold here now but I need to fix the right side camber kit, I didnt know they were stamped RR and RF. Need to drop the UCA and switch those so I dont get charged extra.
I went one place and got a bunch of blah blah blah and they were going to look at it then the exhaust hangar caught the rack so the car wouldnt go on it, then the PS hose busted right then... Very disheartening.
Looks good lowered though :hs:

some dumbass owned it before and it's basically all f'ed up, I just got the headset and I'm about to fix that, someone is sending me the proper rear derailer, it needs tubes and tires, and just general work, if I feel like it I may repack the rear bearings and crank bearings this weekend, It has all the 70's accessories like the best bikes rear rack, the tiger generator, star headlight etc, it even still has the factory suicide levers on the brakes, I converted the light to a high power LED, made a super bright rear light, and I'm trying to figure where to hide the batteries, I'm leaving the generator for looks, but I hate those things, it's got some paint chips, but I dont want to repaint it as it's original, it's character, still trying to figure out why the front derailer has to sit crooked to clear the chain, the bracket and mechanism was there , but the derailer was broken off at the welds, I got another Schwinn approved one, but the bracket was too small, so I swapped the rail, it may need a spacer

If you're riding a Wal-Mart bike, you'll have nothing but hardship. It will never work right and just be slow, heavy and exhausting always. Do whatever you can to upgrade to a mainline bike manufacturer like Trek, Cannondale, GT, Diamond Back or any other brand you find at a respectable bike shop. Even a 20 year old Trek you buy off Craigslist will be a million times better and more reliable than the best, new Wal-Mart bike.

Trust me, I bicycle commuted for years in the Central Valley where everything is spread out. I bicycle commuted throughout college (all 8 years of it). I rode so much, I wore out entire drive trains in 3 months. If you want to ride fast, ride far and stay fresh, lose the Wal-Mart bike.

Snooz, he has a 1972 Schwinn Super Sport, which is an extremely well made bike. I have a 1973 SS myself. I'm getting ready to convert mine to a 700c wheeled bike with a flip flop hub. I love friends that have ins at a bike shop. Hell, we paint a frame or two a week in the couple of hours I go over to his shop.

Tim, if that bike still has the original wheels, they are ready to be tossed in the garbage can. My bike is an incredibly low mile bike, but I really don't trust the spokes and rim. A lot of hybrids came with 700cs, even the cheap big box bikes, so you should be able to find a decent set of wheels for not a lot of money. Swap on your freewheel, move your brake pads down, and swap over your Schwinn Approved skewers and be one of the cool kids. If my spare set of wheels didn't have a planned use, I'd see if I could find a way to get them to you cheap.

the bike turned out to be a 71 not a 72, this gives it the forged, instead of stamped rear dropouts, and the integral derailer hanger, the rear derailer I got was for a 72 not a 71, and designed to mount to the axle bolt, but by flipping over the mounting plate, it mounts to the 71 hanger just fine. the bike has the original weiman wheels, if the back one wasn't so out of round now, I would re spoke them, I have a lead on a great condition set, they are fragile wheels, this is one of the bikes where you need to really lift your weight off the bike on any kind of heavy bump to unload the rims. The bike forum people have been fantastic in finding stuff for me, like the rear spoke protector, the proper derailer, I found the front chain ring guard for two bucks, bike is restrung, brakes adjusted, now I just need wheels and new tires and tubes.

I haven't even tried yet but I want to use it for an old Kramer Stryker, beak neck with a similar shape, but if it doesn't fit it goes on Craigslist, or re-purposed heh. ;like the pictures< I am a bit out of focus lately so pardon my aimlessness...

very good advice, last year I thought I would topple the bike snobs and bought a couple of those seemingly awesome deal state of the bikes at the wally world. Took three bikes back for one of them, finally got a refund, and on the other one took it back to swap once and I think the only reason it is still around is it isn't being ridden.

Replaced the first one with a nice 2yr old Trek for around 300 off of Craigslist, still going with zero issues.

An example of a self destructing design one the genesis walmart bike; the air vent in the middle of the seat lets water run directly inside the hollow seat post all the way to the crankset bearing housing. That actually will destroy the bike before it's even sold since the bikes are outside at times at the store!

Is that the one with the TDi swap? I've always been a fan of the small, maneuverable 4x4 as opposed to big brute forcing your way through things. :) Though both ways of off roading is pretty fun. :)

Not the TDI but the old NA indirect injection 1.6L. 59 screaming horsepowers! The wheelbase is too short in these things for them to be very safe at high speed, so you don't really need much HP unless you want to get into mud bogging. But then your better off with a full size truck and a big V8.

This is intended to be a trail truck. Right now I'm in the middle of a YJ spring swap and rear disc brake conversion. I also need to make up new bumpers and add a winch.

I know it can be removed. It's just that it's a huge PITA, and depending on how it it was applied you will have a crap ton of patching to do. At least now there are no sparklies so it's not so bad. Anyway it's too late now since it's already been painted.

The house was built in 1986 so no asbestos.

C|

My house was that way too. I tried it in an inconspicuous area, and the stuff is actually into the plaster, not just on the surface, so the whole ceiling would have to be floated smooth after scraping. I just sprayed it with flat white ceiling paint, and it looks great.

LEDs are SO the way to go on older vehicles. Not only do they never burn out but they draw less current so they put less strain on old marginal wiring. Of course if the wiring is really bad it should be replaced anyway, but many times on older vehicles the wiring isn't so much bad, it's just a little undersized by today's standards.

I agree with the LEDs, especially when you're lighting a trailer. On a trailer, using LEDs lets you add side running lights and still draw less current than you would with incans.

Doing some LED installs in a 3gee would be sweet. We have a great how-to for the 88/9 front marker lights. Maybe the tail lights will be what I tackle.

Did somebody say LEDs?!

http://i.imgur.com/lFTuRAK.jpg

I agree with it drawing a lot less current, trailer or not. I forgot how much mine draws but I believe its less than 1/4 of what the stock 8W/21W bulb draws.

If anybody going for full LED conversion, go with high quality LEDs. They can be expensive but its worth it. I used ebay LEDs and some of them went out on my side markers and it wasn't fun.

When I learned that Honda wanted $12 per bulb for some teeny, tiny bulbs that had burned out in my dash, I considered doing a full conversion. When I priced that out, however, I decided the $12 bulbs were just fine. Some of the larger LEDs run $25 ea. and it would have amounted to well over $100 to convert. I bought a few smaller LEDs and put them in, but I'm not ecstatically happy with the results. They are very intense and don't really work with the dimmer switch. Nor does their light distribute well through a dash designed for incandescents. I'm not bashing on doing the conversion, just suggesting a few sticking points I couldn't overcome.

Hazwan
07-22-2013, 06:45 AM
Even lighting for the cluster can be done with LEDs. There are few options for it but I opted with using LED strips inside the cluster instead of 5 individual bulbs stock. It's a lot of work but well worth it. I've done plenty of conversion using the same method and they all came perfect.

This one in particular is done with LED strips mounted inside the cluster and UV LEDs lighting up the needles above with UV reactive paint on the needles

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/133205_10151097580872106_1321227346_o.jpg

Where did you find that $25 LED btw? That is ridiculously expensive for a cluster LED. That sounds about right for a tail/turn signal conversion bulbs though.

apache07x
07-22-2013, 07:37 AM
Yeah I did mine with stock bulbs and it doesn't look bad. Do have a hot spot on the climate control buttons but really no way around it that I can tell unless you could put a strip in it. The temperature and fan switches were a real pain since there wasn't a standard LED for them I had to do some soldering. Overall it looks good but it only cost me around $65 for everything so $25 per bulb sounds high to me too.

Had the fun filled time of working on a GM product yesterday. To change the radiator literally took about 2 hours. Just ridiculous. Had to take the wiring harness that goes above the radiator loose, motor mounts, strut braces, battery and battery box etc etc etc.... Of course in typical GM fashion something that requires 2 bolts to hold in place like the battery box has 4 and so on. Why did I even have to remove all of that crap to get the radiator out....oh silly me because it says GM on it. (half hearted lol)

I did learn that when you write GM=POS on the air intake of your spouses car said spouse does not find the humor in it. AT ALL.

I'm feeling quite smug :D

A couple of weeks ago I took the misbehaving starter motor off the tractor and mum took it to town to the auto sparky, they stuck it on their tester machine and came back with the diagnosis of "Totally munted mate, really fucked, giz us $600 and we'll order a new one for you"
So mum decided to do that when the animals sold and some cash came in. Brought the starter back and I stuck it back on again.

This morning I went to start the tractor and no matter what I did, just couldn't get it to start. So figuring it had died for good, I may as well pull it off, open it up and have a play inside. The problems seemed to revolve around the soleniod not engaging so I pulled that off and tried opening it to clean the innards. Front cap off, ok, great, it's just a flange. Hit it up with the wire wheel on the angle grinder to remove 30 years of crud and put it back on.

Back cap was a bit more problematic... No matter what I did only one side would budge...

A bit more poking, crud removal and investigation found why. This model of solenoid is soldered after assembly, the reason one side opened was the solder had corroded and fallen off! Two wires inside the back cap disappear forward into the main body of the solenoid casing, one remains soldered properly, the other is free and slides out of the cap where is should be soldered solidly in place.

A bit of bending, a bit of prying with a chisel, a bit of hitting with a hammer... finally I got the contact brush bolts out, hit them with the wire wheel, cleaned up a bit of worn flashing with a file, installed again. cleaned all the bolts, washers, nuts and contacts with the angle grinder and wire wheel. Managed to close the rear cap up again and dug out the soldering gun.

bolted the soleniod housing back on the main body of the starter motor and re-installed the starter back on the tractor again.

2 and a half hours after first trying to start the tractor, I hopped on the seat, ran the glow plugs a while, and it started on the first try!

Brilliant, Saved several hundred dollars with a few hours greasy poking and prying and a few cents of solder!

I'm happy :D

Hoping for in a month or so I can get a 89 Accord LXI coupe. It looks pretty good. This sunday I get to try it out and inspect it. Most of all I will see if it really does have a miss. If the engine craps out well I have my old block from my last accord. I may just build up that block and swap it in when need be. I haven't decided if I want to swap out the auto for a manual. I like manuals better but I really hate tearing out the interior. All that plastic. Granted I did it a million times with my old 3g. Anyways, I will try to get some videos of it running and driving and some more pictures of it. Interior and under hood and trunk. I will pretty much have more information on it by sunday night. So yeah keep looking for new updates on it.

I'm probably being more frank than I should, but bro, is this really better than the car you sent to the dump? It looks to me like you're signing up for more disappointment.

Second wet sanding with 2000 grit, trying to get most of the orange peel out and see what I got to deal with, looking pretty good so far. I got another deck lid and may use the spoiler I got from irondragon13, need some more eyelids and grill ends too. Yes the hood scoop is somewhat functional, there is a nice opening cut in the hooss :)

Got a 95 accord. Needs lots of TLC but for $500 I'll have it looking sharp in a few months if momma wants to keep it.
Pros V6, air that works, loaded all sorts of goodies.
Cons 198k miles, interior shot, had pit move done to it so it's in need of a fender and a lot of the goodies look as though they may need some work. But it does run good and a lot of stuff seems to work which surprised me as rough as it is.

Here are the before's. Sorry about it being a 5g lol

Preparing to replace in the next couple weeks:
Spark plug wires (NGK #9199), greaseable front tie rod ends (MOOG part#ES2095R), black poly front sway bar end links (part#16.8104), black poly front strut rod bushings (part# 16.7102), and black poly greaseable sway bar bushings (part# 9.5156)

All this is going on a 1989 LX with 142,xxx miles, hoping to tighten up the front end for now and eventually throw on an addco rear sway bar and some struts and springs

Lemme know what you all think

I haven't been on here in like three and half years, started being fairly active on the facebook page and thought I'd come back and check things out. Should probably change my sig as I sadly no longer have either of them.

I'm working on getting a 4g sedan on the road, almost have it drivable, then onto swapping the old, nasty interior with my nice, clean one.

Also doing a little computer work, getting a Win98 virtual machine working on my XP(hopefully soon to be Win7/8) laptop so I can play some of my old PC games

Nice, Eric, you're making a Ram that can light up the road! Worst stock headlights ever.

I've been working on odds and ends trying to get my electronics lab up and running. My current project is fixing my oscilloscope.

Rack is in the car, but my battery died while I was working on it. Once it's charged up, I'm going to take it for a test drive.

First notes: The wheel is easy to turn when standing still on concrete. Far less effort than before. Very direct feel, absolutely no play in the wheel. The rack I rebuilt was from a 150,000 mile car, and it looked brand new as I tore it down. No pics, I'm lazy.

I'm probably going to depower my rack when I get my motor back in. Did you do anything special to it or just loop the lines?

I want one, mines without power but the wheel grabs the steering wheel a lot, hydraulic bounce or inner tie rods i guess for cause

When I did mine I took the guts out of the valve body and plugged the ports. Does pretty much the same thing as looping but slightly cleaner.

It's been awhile since I've been here posting anything, some you that know me might remember that I picked up a 1965 Impala project to work on along with my 1979 Cutlass.
I've put the 65 Impala project on hold for now and decided to pick something else up for the Summer to cruise around in.
Here she is, 1954 Chevy Truck that I picked up from my boss at a unbelievable price.
