I know he better off with a cleaner shell but finding a better condition like this one for cheap (even if you could find one!) is gonna be a huge PITA.

Honestly the condition isn't that bad. I've seen worse with bunch of rust spots but this one is actually pretty clean minus the shoddy repair/bondo work which I'm gonna sort them out obviously!

I'm gonna strip them to the bare metal, replacing most of the weatherstrips (if available) and doing some tastefully done mods while we're at it :D

That's going to be a fun project, man! Did you ever find out what the deal was with the lug conversion? How he did it?

Glad it's getting some love!
A bit rough like you said, but doesn't look too bad. At least the attention has hopefully kept the rust from getting out of control.
I know those side creases can be hard to get perfect.
Definately looking forward to the end results & hope you don't uncover too many horrors along the way.

Did somebody just said moar PICS?

I've managed to finish the whole passenger side in one day :o In case you're wondering, all I'm using to scrape them off is a heat gun + scraper :D Worked wonders. I still have to clean the leftover paint/bondo with a sander and it should be ready for bondo (if any) and primer by next week. Then I'm gonna get the windshield off and get some rust holes welded by a shop. Fun!

Thoughts guys? How hard is it for a total noob like me to learn on how to weld sheet metal like this?

practice makes perfect :) just practice on lots of scrap steel, maybe some thicker stuff to get the hang of it at first so you don't get frustrated and just blow holes everywhere in thin stuff lol

I have a MIG welder with gas myself, sounds best for thin sheet metal but the heat will still give distortion if not used carefully. Regular fees for the gas bottle rental even if you don't use it but useful to have around.. Preludes rust more than Accords.. Honda Z much worse.. my Lancias have a little & their parts cars are terrible...
A previous owner or "repairer" of one my Preludes had evidently used old fashioned ox-acetelene welding and made a right mess of it; looks like that requires real skill.
I didn't have too many problems teaching myself MIG welding though my cheap welders sticky, inconsistent wire feed can be VERY annoying and anything less than perfectly clean metal creates problems too

I had a very quick hunt on RetroRides for suggestions...obviously there're plenty more.

And there's always these threads for inspiration:

Some are quite epic.
You know they're used to rust! If not slightly mad.

Panels with rusty reinforcement panels underneath like most of those can be a pain for the rust returning unless you can get those internal surfaces really clean & rust-free though.. I have to re-do my Preludes cowl panel again because the little wiper-pivot mounting panel/reinforcement under the outer panel had rust in the joint between them.

Before the primer you should do a chemical to the bare metal treatment to avoid rust.

I use a phosphoric acid based product. Then you can be sure no rust will bubble under the shiny new paint in your right front door.

The treatment gives enhanced rust protection. I have treated a 1969 mustang 10 years ago. The car is bare metal, no paint in the exterior and sitting outside in the rain all this time. No rust whatsoever. Is pretty amazing.

What's the stuff called?

Here we have a local brand, but you just need to ask for a de-rust treatment based on phosphoric acid, there's lot of brands selling that stuff.
A rapid googling found me this results for NZ.

Tergo rust remover and metal conditioner:

Non-acid product (never tried this stuff myself):

Managed to put some rust protection/bondo on the welded areas.

Nah not mine. Its a customer's car pretty much haha he saw my car pics on failbook and determined to find who the owner is and then paid me a bunch of $$$$ to do pretty much exactly what I did to my car.

I wish I could weld myself because I would do things exactly my way and not to mention cheaper. They wanted too much to fix the whole car so we have to opt for the cheaper by welding only the critical structural areas. I'm gonna have to fix the rest with fiberglass. Oh well.

Anyway so I didn't get much done to the car recently. Been busy with other crap and cars, and titties apparently >< But here are some boring bondo pics

Sucks you have to use all the fiberglass. But so long as you put some good rust protector on top of the metal, and get as much of the rust out as you can, hopefully it'll last a while. Maybe treat the rusty areas with some rust converter or something like Por15 before the fiberglass goes down. Hopefully that will make it last.

Rofl you guys.

Anyway so upon further investigation, I found out that the drip rail area is rusted out beyond saving leaving me no choice but to cut them all out and shave them while I'm at it since obviously I can't weld and having people to do it for me would cost a fortune. I always wanted to do it on my car but never got the chance to do it. Besides, the are barely any rust in there so figured why fix something that isn't broken? The owner agreed to shave the drip rails so..

Yikes, just as well you removed it with all that mess going on underneath.
Really looking forward to seeing how that works out as I am interested in removing the gutters from an Accord one day too.
I had thought of possibly adding some new ones afterward though. Possibly aftermarket adhesive chrome side-strip (or original stainless steel pieces) applied to some simple bent angle strips that could be screwed to the roof. Allowing it to be adjusted to fit closer to the roof & doors than Honda intended, for a smoother look.

Wow some major progress since I last looked. Scarey idea fiberglassing the sill end areas though.
De-guttering on-the-way. Gap to doors frames doesn't look as big as I thought it would.
Back will look neater without the chrome trim above the lamps like that too.
Worth removing the bumpers rubber trim support panel as well?
I'm still getting some rust stains from behind mine on the '77 & had removed it from the '79.
You could bolt/screw it back on afterward?
I think I ground/drilled back the spot-weld areas before wobbling it about to fatigue the remaining metal when removing from '79 so as not to disturb metal underneath.

Beautiful wheels.
Wow 8" will be interesting to fit.. Very dramatic looking if they can, & no doubt tire stretch required.
Sad work on those fender bottoms. Gets depressing not being able to do work to the standard you would like with welding & metal work.
I know you will do well regardless but hope the end result won't deteriorate quickly afterwards.

Yeah 8" with that offset is gonna be fun to get them to fit. I'm pretty sure I need some flares for the back but I don't know yet. I still need to convert the car to 4x100 first.

Looks like I'll be facing the same problems trying to get that upper side crease line straight and consistent on a friends car tommorrow. I ended up making a cast strip with body filler, taped a straight edge above & used the cast section to drag the filler in a straight line. but haven't seen how well that turned out yet after we primered it in the dark. I'm sure our wheelarch line needs more work though.

Now I gotta convince the owner to let me slam the car to the ground unless he wanted to look like an idiot with this 'fail' stance xD And yes its a normal sight here with people with 4x4 stance but with stretched tires and poking wheels. When will they learn that wheel gaps are bad?

2ndGenGuy
12-10-2012, 08:48 AM
That is certainly a lot of poke. Though it does look like if you can get it down, it will look better.

79cord
12-11-2012, 05:31 AM
Yep they protrude far more than I'd ever want! Even if the wheels do look beautiful.
Certainly one way to attract attention anyway.
Given the additional fender flares I wondered how low they could be mounted to reduce wheel gap, though I guess they still have to allow for more upward wheel travel than slammed.
Did they have much clearance to the struts? Not sure how much their offset compensates for the 8" width.

Hazwan
12-11-2012, 06:06 AM
Theres plenty of clearance with the strut, about 1-2". As for the flares, they were mounted as low as I could in the pics. I might be able to mount them lower by getting rid of the stock arches or something. But I've managed to convince the owner that he needs to go lower to pull that look and he agreed :D

I'm guessing another 2" of drop and some slight neg camber up front from having about 3-4" of total drop (-2 degrees prob?) the tires would be flush with the flares

Lancer coilovers again? I guess coilovers use a standard size spring so lower/stiffer springs are easier to get.
Need spacers for the flares? Hope wheel movement doesn't bash them, should look a spectacular tight fit once done to your plan.

Now heres something that I hate to do: the engine bay. It was such a mess its not even funny!

I know I should have done the bay first but the owner was planning to do an engine swap sometime later after the car was painted but he changed his mind later so..

No crazy shave/tuck or anything like my car, just a quick respray and redo the hacked up harness >< Whoever did the work on it before should be shot!

I don't plan on removing the engine for some reason, don't ask! :D

Blasted both the bay and the engine with bunch of degreaser. Soo much cleaner LOL

Not perfect but then its a lot better than what it used to look like, besides I know a lot of so called shops did worse so..

32 LEDs for tail/brake, 14 for turn signals and 10 for reverse per side. Should be plenty bright.
