I have searched all of the power steering threads, to no avail. I have removed all bolts, connections, and hoses as stated in the linked shop manual. Everything looks like it should come out but the shaft that goes into the connector with the steering column is too long (tall) to remove completely. It says to slide the whole rack out sideways but the shaft prevents lateral movement. It needs to be dropped another ince to slide the rack out, but the inner portion of the inner tie rod end hits the rear cross member portion that accepts the lower control arm bolt. Has anyone done this, and if so, has anyone done this without removing the rear cross member?

I have removed the rack without removing the subframe.
if you have removed the lines and both brackets separate the rag joint from the rack/steering column. make sure the rag joint stays on the steering column, not the rack. With some strategic rotation of the rack you can pull it out

Thanks carb. I kept the joint with the column, and considered rotation, just got frustrated and quit. Will try again tomorrow.

I spent a weekend cursing a blue streak when I tried to remove the rack on my '82 Accord. I threw wrenches and snarled at random passersby. Then, when I went to put it all back together, I realized that there was another bolt on the rag joint. Loosen it and the rag joint will slide up farther onto the steering column. The reassembly went super easy after I figured that out.

That's at least what I am able to remember. It was a long time ago. The important point here is that it is simple. Get down there and look at the rag joint and you should be able to figure it out.

With no passerby at which to snarl and swear, I "finessed" my steering rack out, and have the reman on its way. This dramatically upgrades my abilities to park in a friends driveway without drawing their ire. Once it is in I expect to drop the engine back in, and so I not so patiently await the Fedex guy like a dog to a fire truck.

another way is to turn the rack out to the passenger side, this allows a little bit more room if you have the tie rods still on. Even then its always a pain to replace the rack, on the automatics you need to snake the whole assembly around a cable for the trans

I have eliminated the holder without eliminating the subframe. If you have eliminated the collections and both supports individual the rag combined from the rack/steering pillar. create sure the rag combined remains on the guiding pillar, not the holder. With some ideal spinning of the holder you can take it out .

I know this is my steering thread, but that is now in, and with the engine in the bay something looks off. Just looks tilted and my old pics don't show the correct stance very well. If any of you can look and tell me your thoughts I would appreciate it.

Check the condition of your mounts.

Mounts are all brand new, and torque specs are exact. A few mounts were a mother to get lined up, but they are all in. I am a bit baffled so I have been looking at hundreds of engine pics from this site and many seem to sit the same way. I guess I will keep trying to find any issues and hope all items (i.e. drive axles) fit as they should.

Yours isn't wildly out of line. I don't think you'll have a problem.
