If I happen be driving during very heavy rain and encounter an accumulation, e.g. an inch deep or more, of water, the power steering may momentarily become unresponsive. This behavior will usually pass within a few seconds but is a bit disconcerting when it happens. Does anyone have an idea what causes this?

Sounds like your power steering belt is loose, and when you hit the water, it slips, causing the pump to stop momentarily.

Ah, I should have thought of that. I'll check it. Thanks.

Definitely what John said, my car does the same ever after I removed the underbody protector and got new belts.

Yeah mine squeals when I start it up and it's a new belt last month.I need to tighten it up because it will stretch ,or maybe some power steering fluid got on it.
