I can get manual steering racks at my local junkyard.

If someone is interested, I can buy a rack and ship it to you.

Those would be around 60-70 plus shipping

Who's interested?

I am in. Can you give me a shipping estimate to 45140 (Cincinnati, Ohio, USA)?

Thanks Carotman, you rock hard.

So Jim? You want one too????

Anyone knows how much those weigh?? That would be easier to find how much shipping would cost.

Flaming River lightweight (aluminum) rack & pinions weight about 15 lbs. I can only guess that a stock would weight no more than twice as much (30 lbs).

 :lol If I were to get another 3g, yes I sure would. I just think a manuel rack is much better than a disconected & drained power one.

Dang I miss my car:crying:

Does anyone know where I can find a power rack from with the inner tie rods? I've got a leak on my shoes and was informed the whole thing needs to be replaced, plus the tie rods are shot.

Any good sized autoparts store should be able to order you one. some might even have one in stock. Mine was $130 with a $35 core fee remanufactured by Crown. It came with tie rods. Post again if you have any questions.

I just got a manual rack from AccordEXi (he's in Canada). When I install it, I'll take a pic of it side by side with the power rack so we can all see the difference. I'm also hoping the manual rack will give better handling than the drained power rack.

Yeah, I need a manual rack, as my power one leaks, so I want to tear out the whole power steering system.

hey Jim, or really anyone out there.....

I currently do have the power rack (obviously), and as many of you know, I'm an Auto-x'er at heart, and this hatch is what I use. Sooo..... how will a manual rack effect my auto-x abilities? Is it really a big diff. bet. the two in the 3G?

i would think that for autocrossing you may as well keep it. the reason you would want to take it out is to squeeze that last bit of power out that the power steering sucks from the engine but when you're doing a lot of quick steering like that i'd think it's worth it to keep it and sacrifice the minimal amount of power the power steering it taking from the engine. just my thoughts, i don't really know what somebody with experience would say.

Well I'll go past the other benefits, like weight savings and less parasitic power loss and give you the answer you want. Manuel racks vs power racks are known to give out better feel of the road in most cars where a manuel rack was avaliable. This could benefit you by allowing you to get a better read of what the tires and suspension are up to and in turn allow you to work your controls better to improve you times. I wanted a manuel rack for that reason. It was just that doing the revalved Bilsteins and eventually custom ground controls was going to come first.

If you go to autozone they can order you a manual rack and pinion, because they carry parts for canadian models of cars along-side US models. Here is the link to there webpage with the Manual R&P.MANUAL R&P (Autozone) (http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker/?UseCase=C001&UserAction=answerRequiredQuestion&Parameters=%7C%7EMANUAL+STEERING&PageSync=4)

been there, done that, what i really want is a quicker steer ratio, ours is goddamn slow and anybody that's slid their rearend knows what im talking about

does the integra 1st gen have a quicker ratio? one of those racks, with a larger ps pulley or adjustable restriction in the rack would be ideal

i've a spare manual rack for a 2g sitting in my buddys yard, i doubt they are interchangeable with a 3g, but if someone wants to run numbers and can use it, they can have it.

it's still in the rear crossmember but its in fairly good shape.

in order to get the manual rack, you have to order it USED from them. even then it's iffy IMO.

beyond that, will he let the crossmember go too? How much will he get for that?

Don't forget guys, without major modification to the crossmember on the US cars, the manual rack will not fit. The best way to get the manual rack in is to use the crossmember from the manual cars too.

yeah doesnt that suck?!!

well i wonder how much modifying would be involved in adapting the PS rack crossmember to work with manual rack...

AccordEpicenter
04-13-2006, 08:59 AM
well what is the crossmember that requires mods? the one under the engine or the rear beam that the rack bolts to? Hash man can you still get the manual rack?

bobafett
04-14-2006, 07:54 AM
i would assume the rear crossmember that the rack sits underneath. i didnt see any steering components near the 'front to back' crossmemeber. :)

oh ps:

i did a manual steering 'hack' on my setup. it is seriously pretty fine.
here is what I did:

- remove ALL my PS shit so i have a bare rack, and no rez, and no lines anywhere on the car
- take the lines that connect to the rack, and cut them, 1-2" from where they bolt in
- flare the ends a bit so hoses will fit tighter on the metal tubing.
- now you loop the connections take some hoses and connect a hose between the speedo sensor input and speedo sensor out put on the rack. these two lines have the 12mm bolt size and use the same size tubing
- now loop the pressurized input line to the output to the rack line, you will need a barbed fitting to step up the size of the hose, because the return line is a lot larger than the feed line. these lines are the ones that use the 14mm and the 17mm bolts to install into the rack.

make sure you use really good hose clamps. i think i still leak a little bit of fluid, but this works well for the time being. :)
doesnt take a TON of effort to turn the wheel, its very drivable, but yes you will need two hands! there is a method on honda-tech that involves using a res with a breather on it to allow easier movement of the wheel, and this is supposedly the setup that the RTR integras used!!

http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=184202

just in case you decide to convert instead of buying the rack. ALSO, the next thing I plan on trying is this:
http://flyinmiata.com/tech/depower.php?x=1

it seems like it would make the wheel super easy to turn because there is no seal to resist against movement that needs to push fluid! :)

AccordEpicenter
04-14-2006, 10:16 AM
yeah i hate cornering at low speeds with my power steering disconnected/not working, but if i do that ill have arms like arnold. Im looking into depowering the power rack like the miata one, but im gonna find another rack so i can tear into it and then install it later.
