hey guys was wanting to buy a K&N air filter for my car because you get better fuel economy a bit of horse power and it a better buy for your buck instead of the fram paper ones. but my question is because im doing my research on this thing and it seems pretty legit but alot of ppl say its gonna damage your engine over time and the fram air filters will never do such a thing. i dont know much on these things wanted to know what do you guys think is it a gd idea for me to get this filter or will it damage my engine in the long run.

thanks :)

They don't filter as well as paper media, so you'll be getting more grit sucked into the engine. They do give a little more power, but will make your mileage worse. A lot worse. I lost about 4 mpg when I had one on my 3g. I got rid of it and don't miss it.

accordfan Since this is your third thread with the exact same question{s} I am tempted to merge them all together. There is some very good information on the first one you posted that answers everything other than calculations of $ value so I appreciate the posts just not necessary to have it in three threads.
As you have been doing, send me a PM if you want to do that. thanks

If you're concerned, then don't buy one.

It has been proven that intake add horsepower to hondas. Our intake systems are so restrictive.

LOL!

I have to say that my butt dyno registered a power gain with a K&N filter in the stock air box. Of course, I also lost 4 MPG which sucked. I run paper filters now.

I'd like to see them do this with older cars like ours or even just carbed cars for that matter. I think the reason has to do something with all the computerized controls on newer cars.

so i would loose 4 MPG fuel economy. so i guess ill stick to a short ram heat intake

Here is some light reading, with a lot of right proper testing and such on the subject. I remember reading this years ago when I was heavily involved in the VW TDI scene and, well, you really can't go wrong with a paper filter at all. They work properly. That is why the good folks with the slide rules in their pockets put them in from the factory. Same goes for the airbox system. Most OEM intakes will supply more than enough air for a stock motor.

You're not understanding. There is no way to make more power without using more gas. If you like your mileage, keep it bone stock.

True Roo.... LoL
The objective for mpg performance mods is to minimize throttle opening needed to propel motion. What had happens is the mods also make the foot heavier since it connects to the butt dyno. Thazza Fact Jack :)

When I was driving my SE-i regularly, I drove it in conditions that did not really change. I occasionally sent off my oil to the testing company in Cleveland, and I saved the results. Then I installed a K&N filter, and kept it for a couple of years. In that time, I sent out the oil twice. Each time it came back in about the same shape as before, EXCEPT the silicon (sand) content was way up. I pondered this for awhile, then threw out the K&N and went back to stock. The next couple oil tests the silicon came back down. Was it meaningful? Who knows, it was to me. The ideal of letting grit into your engine in return for at best a marginal increase in power didn't cut it.
