Hey everybody, my first Honda was a civic wagon that I've had for ~10 years, but just picked up this '88 DX hatch (5m spd) for the low price of getting it out of a family members yard. It had sat where parked in the first pic. for 7 years.

I swapped in a battery, added some fresh gas to the tank, gave it a shot of starter fluid, and it came right back to life. Then I pulled it out for a quick wash and and oil change, before driving it the 30 miles back to my house.

You can see the broken tail light and screwed up front end, the hood was overlapping the headlights and everything is out of alignment. First thing when I got it home was a thorough, seats out, cleaning, lots of dirt inside, potting soil, I think a whole bag of it. Also, lots of really old stickers which were hard to get off after all that time. With parts from the junkyard I replaced the tail light, added a passenger mirror and rear muds, replaced the third brake light housing and painted it black, replaced the sun visors and the grill, and added a rear sway bar from an LX-i. Added new plugs, wires, air filter, hatch struts, welded some patches in the exhaust, and inspected the timing belt and brakes. I spent a lot of time trying to get the headlights, hood, and fenders to line up, but in the end they are still not right. Nothing touches or binds, but the gaps are not even to say the least. A week after it was on the road, someone broke in by smashing the passenger window, so after a couple attempts at finding a compatible one, here it sits now.

I have 5 spoke MINI wheels I might throw on it and maybe a stereo if I end up driving it a lot, right now it has the factory radio delete plate.

Also thinking about trying some rallycross with it seeing as it is already beat up.

Pretty nice car under all that dirt lol. How is all the suspension and brakes?

Thanks, I think the suspension is ok for now. I'm sure the bushings are tired but the shocks don't seem blown. The brakes are good, although the pedal is a little soft. Overall it's a decent car with relatively low miles, 155k, it' just banged up a bit.

Car looks pretty tidy without the algae on the door LOL. Even the front end looks fine. Don't be afraid to bend panels to make them fit right. Your hood on the driver's side by the headlight looks just like my aftermarket hood. I ended up bending the grille out (by slamming the hood onto blocks) to meet the headlight. It looks fine now. Beyond that, don't worry too much. Even the OE configuration had uneven gaps.

All in all your car looks great. I would say it's very restorable if you're into that. The paint looks to be in good shape and the body is straight. The upholstery also looks good. You have some panel fitment issues and some broken lights, but that's nothing really.

Welcome!

Thanks for the kind words Doc, if I find a gold one in the yard I will pull the fenders, hood, and headlights. I think the pictures make it look better than it is, but it's not that bad. Right now I'm just having fun driving it, definitely has more torque than my civic, but it does not like to rev as easily.

Hope your luck with junkyard body panels is better than mine. After I get all the dirt off, they are always worse than what I have.

A little update, been slowly working on putting in a stereo. Grabbed front/rear speakers and rear grills from the yard and added a low budget Kenwood deck up front. The grills were grey with ripped fabric, so I removed that and painted them black on the inside with brown exterior. Wired it all up with an OEM style connector and it sounds decent. The front's are some little Pioneers and the rears are out of an early Volvo S40, I may change those out later but they work for now. I also made a dash mat to keep things from sliding around.

Nice work. I'm forever digging things out of the door pocket after they slide off the dash.

A little update, I got some tires, 185/60/15s, for the MINI wheels and got them mounted, I think they look really good. Also changed out the fuel filters, I was surprised but it actually made a noticeable difference.

The wheels update the look very nicely. Great work!
