Just wanted to share with everybody my next project. As I can't afford an original digital cluster, I'm going to install a first gen s2000 cluster.

Say hello to my little friend!

what I would really like to see is one of these cars equipped with a full set of stacks gauges, they are some of the cleanest looking aftermarket gauges there are, if I had the cash, I would install a set, but quality gauges come with a price tag, its not even hard to change the fuel sender, you can now get electronic senders where you just cut the rod to the depth of the fuel tank, you can install one into the factory sending unit plate. No moving parts in the sender. as far as a trigger for the speedometer, put the guts of a factory speedo in a box behind the dash, and use the speed pulser as a trigger for the new speedometer

Working on the wiring, trying to make this a complete plug-n-play swap. Only problem is going to be the a-"plug" on the cluster. It's not actually a plug, so I will have to improvise a little.

I thought of that, but if there is a VSS that will fit the transmission, that eliminates the speedometer cable completely, if not a junk speedo could just be put in a box behind the dash. modern aftermarket speedos can be calibrated to anything, it's just a theory right now as I dont have the 700 dollars for the tach, speedometer, fuel leve,l temp, and oil pressure gauges , not including the electronic sender I would have to use to make ii be able to read fuel level with this gas tank. The gauges would fit though and they are gorgeous gauges

thats what Im trying to find, it doesnt matter if the gear ratio is right on the vss as you calibrate an electronic speedo anyway, i just need to find a vss amplifier module to change the output to a square wave for the voice module input, it't looking more and more like the best solution is a speedometer head in a box and to move the cable, the cruise doesnt care if it's right eithier, it just samples the number of pulses when you push the button, and compares that to control speed. It has no idea of your actual speed

well I wouldnt need the speed healer, the speedo I'm looking at can be calibrated to any vss, it's finding a vss that will fit the tranny drive gear, just doing my research in case I can afford the gauges i want eventually, do you know what the output signal is on these, is it a rotating magnet in the VSS

back to the subject LOL

Ok, just for the record the vss from 90 and up puts out a signal that goes from 0 to 5 volts, the speedometer in our cars has a magnet that passes a reed switch, and its a ground pulse, im not sure what type of input the digital dash needs, but it will be interesting to see, did the digital dash have a vss that attached to the tranny? I know a standard vss signal could be changed to a grounding signal with a solid state relay, which is just a neatly packaged transistor circuit

Legend_master
04-06-2013, 10:26 AM
The VSS sensor has 3 wires. Power (12V), Ground, and signal output. Power/Ground are obvious. The signal out put goes out to the VSS input on the cluster, VSS input on cruise control, and VSS input at the ECU. I believe a18a installed a 4th gen speedometer in the 3rd gen cluster, and used a 4th gen VSS sensor.

So the digital dash requires a 5 volt in pulse like a late model honda? The usdm 3rd generation is a ground pulse instead of five volt like everything else, I can't remember if. The fi cars convert it to 5 volts or just use the grounding pulse from the speedometer head, I know the cruise uses it directly from the speedometer head, through a diode

I'm not sure how it works, but the speed healer goes in between the cluster and the vss sensor.

right,it probably reads a standard vss signal which is 5 volts logic voltage, but it probably puts out the same thing, if the digital cluster requires a grounding pulse you will have to convert the output of the speed healer to a grounding pulse, instead of a 5 volt pulse, this is easy to do with a solid state relay, which switches it's output through a transistor. Ill see if I can read up on the speed healer later, I believe the schematics for the digital dash are on the non usdm service manual,on the wiki

You know this is from a Honda s2000? This is not the original digital cluster? The VSS is located on the transmission, and the input goes to the speedhealer, then to the VSS input on the cluster. I'm sure there is something going on in the cluster to determine the speed output.

you are going to have to do it wire by wire, solder and heat shrink. you probably need a temp sensor from a late model civic too, they should be the same as other hondas, the ohm range on this one is really strange, i tried to find one before. the threads on the later honda gauge sender are also bigger then the accord

04-06-2013, 04:13 PM
probably the most important plug on there too. can you cut that whole chunk out of the cluster to use as a plug? dunno if its possible to reliably solder to that flexible plasticy terminal board stuff though (dunno what it's called lol)

That's exactly what I was thinking, soldering to those points seems very difficult.

Don't want to cut the harness at all, I may cut out the cluster piece and use a more solid plug connectors.

you can always save the plug and solder it back in if needed, i believe those plugs plug in at the big three connector junction at the dash anyway, I think that entire part of the harness unplugs, you could always get another

Not to my knowledge. Slightly variable according to vacuum, manifold pressure or throttle angle, but not speed. In general, you'll be shooting for 14.7/1 A/F mix in most all conditions other than hard acceleration.

Not sure if that helps.

That would be awesome!

So I had to get the viewing angle just right, if not the whole display just washes out.

You know if you hold down the (+) button the dash will go FULL bright.

Yeah it's turned all the way up, but there is definitely a viewing angle to see it properly.

Thanks!
