car overheated

Last night after parking in a parking garage, I noticed a slight bit of steam from the engine, didn't have time to check, drove home (1.2 miles) and on way home temp gauge went to H, parked same slight amount of steam was coming out. This morning Checked radiator, no leaks underneath, filled with 1 liter of water (no antifreeze) to get to mechanic. It had been flushed and filled just last year with no problems. He tested it and visually inspected it, no leaks. No smoke from tailpipe, oil is good (no discoloration) sparks changed very recently and bone dry. Fans are working properly.

Kinda stumped.

Could be head gasket or thermostat. If the thermostat is not opening properly it will cause it to over heat.
