And if it sits overnight, it starts up fine, right?

I had this problem on my truck. The engine heat would soak into the carb after shut down and boil all the gas out of the carb bowls into the intake. Warm re-starts were exactly as you describe. After sitting overnight, however, all the gas would evaporate off and it would start fine. If the factory heat shields for the carb are in place, then I would start looking for a leak from the carb into the intake.
