When ever im driving down the road, and i get to about 35 mph, this high pitched noise comes out of the hood, and it gets louder and faster as i accelerate. but when i slow down to about 25mph, it tends to go away as i stop. Can anybody tell me what this noise could be coming from. I thought it was the belts, but i know its not, cause its getting alot colder here in boise.

thx :barf:

maybe having something to do with intake drawing in air as you accelerate, and not as much when you slow down?!?! fuck if i know.

well to me it sounds like it might be your brakes. does pushing the brakes stop it?

pushing the brakes used to stop it, but its been ghetting colder here, and now when i push the brakes it doesnt stop it, it just stops when i am at a slow speed.

so you say it's speed related ! not rpm !
is it a sound like of a performance muffler ( woooooooooooooh )
if it is it's propably your wheel bearings !

did u advance ur timing or stuff? I dont know about that cause pinging noice will occur if u have wrong timing (advanced or retarted more than the acceptable degrees). and that is rpm related. but if its not rpm related like Mike suggested, it could be your wheel bearings. look for wear under the car.

I know my 5th gear has a high pitched noise that gets louder and higher pitch as I get faster. It comes from the gears but it has happened for years with no problem. Is your car manual?

nope my car is an automatic, and it usually starts at about 40mph - 50mph now, thats about your 5th gear right? the noise has gone away for a lttle while but sometimes when my music is down i can hear it a little bit.. it is coming form the left side of the hood underneath..

My educated guess would be bad alternator bearings. I had the same problem a few weeks after I got my car. Simple solution for me was to replace it.

Its coming from the passenger side or the drivers side???
If from the passenger maybe its your overdrive, if from the driver maybe a belt or the alternator but you while hear that at a certain rpm and not a speed. Already have problem like that with my alternator i hear a brushing noise but it was at 2000 rpm.

ps: on a automatic its not a 5 gear but you have a overdrive gear.

Could be the speedo cable. My car does it when there's a lot of moisture in the air. Brakes don't stop it (the noise) tho, and it starts way before 30mph.

those are good conclusions guy hehe, my guess is its the alternator, cause my battery has been getting insufficiant power lately and i noticed it gets worse when i go faster, andi know the alternator gives more power when you go faster so...ill check EVERYTHING out his weekend.. thx guys!

My tranny is topped off and I get a whine in 5th too. I can only hear it when drving with the passenger window down next to a curb (reflects the sound back to the car). I'm less concerned about it now that I know someone elses car has been doing it for years and still runs ok.

congrats.. it was the alternator, i put som wd40 on it haha, to get me to the shop, i got me a new alternator and it works fine. No more squeeks. But for those of you out there who might be having sme squeek while you drive, another option i found out, was to check your heat shield above your cat.
